Fine Press (or close enough) Legend of Sleepy Hollow?

Does anyone have any suggestions for a Fine Press version (or nice enough) of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow?

Sure, Arthur Rackham did illustrations for Sleepy Hollow which are extraordinary (but of course)! Unless you're rich, forget the first limited edition, but the illustrations have been reproduced numerous times. Easton Press also has an affordable and nice edition, although the illustrations are not by Rackham. That said, the cover is genuine leather (as per Easton Press) and the illustrations are nice

I have the Easton Press that astropi suggests, and it's beautiful.

>2 astropi: >1 Jobasha: I was lucky enough to get a great deal on the 1928 limited edition with the Rackham illustrations (due to some wear to the vellum and missing signature), and I can confirm it is absolutely beautiful - I would be happy to post pictures if anyone is interested, but I guess those are readily available elsewhere anyhow.

The first trade edition issued concurrently with the deluxe edition is typically well worth purchasing. For most of the Golden Age books, the reproduction of the illustrations is identical between limited and first trade edition, only paper quality and binding are a step down, but still very nice. The first trade edition of Sleepy Hollow is still not inexpensive, though.

Unfortunately, it does not look like there are many high quality re-issues with the Rackham illustrations. The private press of C F Braun issued a reprint in 1959. I don't own this particular edition, but I do have a number of books in the same "series". They are quarter bound in leather with beautiful marbled paper sides, the binding overall is quite nice. Paper quality is also usually good, but unfortunately the illustrations for Sleepy Hollow are reproduced in black and white, which is not ideal for Rackham in my opinion. Some of their other editions, such as Stevenson's Bottle Imp (designed by Ward Ritchie and illustrated with the engravings by Bruno Goldschmitt), are certainly worth pursuing.

If you do not require illustrations, it might be worth having a look at the 1914 Medici Society Knickerbocker Papers, which includes both Sleepy Hollow as well as Rip Van Winkle. Normally their paper quality and print is absolutely wonderful, and if you can find a limp vellum bound copy, those bindings are very nicely done. Looks like currently there is a vellum bound copy described as fine listed on Abebooks for GBP 85 and ample copies in Holland bindings are listed for much less than that.

Peter Pauper Press published a volume with both Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle. I do not own it, but you can generally count on the older PPP volumes (of which this is one) to have solid quality within a modest design. I think it certainly qualifies for "nice enough," although I believe it is not illustrated, except perhaps for a frontispiece.

>1 Jobasha: Tartarus Press published an edition of this which is handsome and in accord with their standard trade dress and limitation (usually 300 unnumbered copies in hardcover).

Not fine press, but solid stitched binding and archival paper. The bindings can be a touch tight (heavy hand on the glue) but I rate the quality as comparable to many standard Folio editions, Centipede Press, etc., and some of their cloth bindings are quite stunning below the understated yellow/cream dust jacket (check out their recent edition of Machen’s The Secret Glory). The Sleepy Hollow production is sedate grey. I find their designs to be quite tasteful.

It is out of print from the publisher, but comes up regularly on eBay etc. Prices were pretty reasonable for Tartarus before the pandemic, but I bet the enthusiasm for sci-fi and fantasy has also affected the market for weird fiction, though I haven’t searched for any out of print Tartarus titles recently.

>1 Jobasha: The Heritage Press has a very affordable edition of Rip Van Winkle, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Stories illustrated by Gordon Ross.

The Ricardi Press for The Medici Society (1914) produced a very nice edition titled The Knickerbocker Papers, Being Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.

Thornwillow has a really nice edition of Rip van Winkle... part of their chapbook series. Not the full Legend... But lovely with accompanying illustrations of Washington Irving's house.

There’s a nice edition of Rip Van Winkle and Sleepy Hollow from Pennyroyal Press with Barry Moser’s illustrations.
