NOTE - I don't remember the author, title or names of the characters
Publication date - The publication date is no older than 1978 but before 2000. I read the book between 1995-2001.
Timeline - turn of the 20th century (late Victorian Era)
Setting - It starts in England and them moves to America
Plot
The heroine is living with her aunt and uncle after the death of her parents. Her father's will stated that in order to keep her inheritance she needs to marry by certain age (I don't remember the age, maybe by the time she is 19) - her father just wanted to make sure that she was taken care off. However the aunt and uncle are greedy and make her wear the most awful dresses, with the least attractive colors. The hero had noticed her and had thought her dress was so ugly she blended with the wallpaper. This way men were not encouraged to seek her out. She usually spend the parties/soirees/balls sitting on a corner.

He is a bastard son and many think that he is in England to throw it on his father's face, and that he is poor. He doesn't care and was only there because of business. He has made money on his own by investing in shipyards and other enterprises. He has friends and had gone to some balls just to annoy the mother's that warn their daughters against him.

She only has two weeks left before she loses her inheritance. She was aware of the hero's "reputation" but also knew that he was leaving again for America and she thinks he needs money. She approaches him offers him a 1,000 lbs of her money to marry her in name only to be annulled when they get to America. He is impressed by her bravery in approaching him as he makes a point to appear forbidding. He realizes what her relatives are trying to do and agrees to her proposal but not because he needs the money. He doesn't tell her that though.

He proceeds to call on her and makes all the arrangements for a special licesense. He also demands that she is given funds to get new dresses and garments that she will need as a wife. They go on walks making plans for the weeding and departure and he notices that she is quite lovely now that she is dressed as the young lady she is.

Once in the ship in the captains quarters (his) she makes a bed on the floor for her to which he objects. His wife is not sleeping on the floor, regardless of it been in name only. Then she proceeds to be seasick and he nurses her. They get to know each other and end off making love. She doesn't want to hold him to the marriage. But he insists in waiting in case she is pregnant. She is not. She leaves for ____? to make a life. She is sort of happy but of course she misses him. He can't stop thinking of her and goes to find her. At some point he asks himself "how does a man go around seducing his own wife?"

After this part I don't remember much and then they lived happily ever after. Of course I am missing many details but considering how much I actually remember its very frustrating that I don't even remember the most basic detail, the title!

Thanks for reading
Angie
