I read this book between probably 1992 to 1994, though based on my memory of the artwork, it could have been published a few years before that, but I would say no early than 1990. It's a youth sci-fi title, the cover has a kid falling out of a spaceship that looks like a silver bullet into a purple lake. At one point he sees things from the perspective of an alien that has 360 degree vision and can change the shape of his arms and hands. I've thought about this book a lot since I read it, and I'm a librarian, but have had no luck finding it, and none of my colleagues in youth have been able to figure it out. Ring any bells for anyone?
