Hello,

I recently ordered various translations of a book. Some arrived, immediately; others were en route. In anticipation of their arrival, I held a slot open for them in "YOUR BOOKS'" by entering title, and author. I discovered that those entries only list 80 approximate readers of said book and only a few book covers from which to choose; whereas, The books that I filled in at the outset- same title- same author, list over 8000 readers and hundreds of book covers. Now that I have begun filling in the remaining data, the book/s still claim only 88 readers and limited book covers. Is there a way- without messing up everything - for everyone- to combine/ merge these books into the predominant file?? In genealogy we have a merge option for duplicate entries. Thank you

It is called combination here. You can do it on your own (via the workbench or from an author page or from the Editions page if they show up as possibles) or you can come post in https://www.librarything.com/ngroups/460/Combiners%21 and we will assist :)

If you post the link here, I can combine for you.

It would be really helpful if you told us what book it was.

>1 EGBERTINA: Could you post a link for the work? It's impossible to say anything without seeing the actual case, other than translations sometimes don't auto-combine and need to be combined manually with the main work

Heidi is a real problem because different copies can include different parts of the series. Besides, there are also film versions to keep separate.

Compare https://www.librarything.com/work/24121770/editions
https://www.librarything.com/work/24121770

The English is usually two books in the original version.

Still very much a Newb at all this- and you all are talking circles around my head. I'm not even certain, whether I need to continue here or move over to the "Combiners" postings. I don't know how to find AUTHOR PAGES, per the first suggestion. As far as I can tell just from my YOUR BOOKS- there are only two "groups" of HEIDI- the one with 88 people and the one with 8,ooo people. All the ones that I entered, in advance, of receiving the book, are group 88. All the others are group 8,ooo. That may, or may not, be explained as to whether I manually entered them, as I don't recall. :-P

Theory disproven. I have other Heidi translations that I entered manually and opted to join the 8,ooo + grouping

Heidi- translated by EILEEN HALL. Captured through overcast- because it had an ISBN.

This is one of the manual entries that joined the larger group: ( Helen b dole translation )
https://www.librarything.com/work/4875/edit/195710198

This all started because, I ordered an edition sight unseen- claiming to be unadapted- and received an edition so wretchedly adapted, it was clearly intended for exceedingly young readers.

This is one of my unfilled in manual entries:

This is my edition translated by Philip Schuyler Allen: all by itself, but that is okay

I hope this isn't technically a new topic- because I find it hard to re-find the starting points for placing questions.

Are you saying- that every time I change something under title or author- I am changing it for everybody? For instance-

If I upload a work ( general ) from Amazon or other place- and it claims to be a /puffin classic/- but mine isnt a /puffin classic/- and I proceed to erase the words /puffin classic/- have I then changed it for everybody?

For instance I have been putting the phrase Newbery Honor next to all Newbery Honor books- am I changing that for everybody? I just like reminding myself, which ones are the Honor books.

>12 EGBERTINA: If you are making those changes to the title field of your book (on the catalog page or the edit book page) then those changes are ONLY on your data and not on everyone's data

Just separated John Smith into its three volumes. There are more that need to be done.

https://www.librarything.com/profile/EGBERTINA/stats/workdups

Most of the work duplicates seem to be right, but Sir Gawain needs some work. (The Tolkien copy includes other works.) Also World Atlas needs the four volumes separated.

And of course Heidi is a mess, because we have no idea what is really in each entry.

I did not make a series of The Complete Works of Captain John Smith, nor did I try to deal with other authors than Barbour.

I did finally figure out how to get to the author page; but, in the instance of Heidi- I won't touch it. It asks me to "merge" my editions with editions illustrated by William sharp- and since many of my editions do not have illustrations by William Sharp, I am content to leave it be

>15 MarthaJeanne:

Surely the Works of Captain John Smith should be listed under their author Smith rather than their editor Barbour? In fact they already are, in what seems to be the same edition, on Smith's page: https://www.librarything.com/author/smithjohn-1
I would have workbenched them all together except that the three are entered individually rather than as a set...

>17 Crypto-Willobie: All I did was break up the work into the three volumes. I did not do anything else. I did not judge the way various members had entered the books. If they were mine I would have Smith as the author and Barbour as other author (all, main, because any other editions of Smith's works would be divided differently.) It was late at night.

>18 MarthaJeanne:
I'm not criticizing your actions, just discussing the situation.

It seems to me that this is a justifiable instance where Barbour should be replaced as primary author by Smith and made into a Secondary/Contributor. The books owner can still get to the Barbour page by clicking his name in their catalogue; the books will just be listed where they belong, in the Also By rather than with Barbour's primary works.
