You know you're a book addict when.....

I know I'm a book addict when I go to the mailbox and there's a new ARC book in the box just waiting for me to read and review.

From the library you have a bag full of borrowed books in one hand and a bag full of books bought from the library bookstore in the other hand.

. . . you have a book (or several) in bed with you. Just in case you wake up during the night and need something to read.

... I can't help it, I sniff books.

What is a book addict called?

Bibliophilia or bibliophilism is the love of books, and a bibliophile or bookworm is an individual who loves and frequently reads books.

When you read while you are cooking. I used to do this when my children were young and my reading time was limited. You can stir and read at the same time. Alas, my multitasking days are over. Now my husband does the cooking and I can read all I want. I do still read in the car while he drives. Life is nice!

>15 Tess_W: Hello, sister! I have gotten better at taking my e-reader with me when I leave the house, so this does not happen as often as it used to, or when I was working full-time and driving a lot. A few years ago when we were traveling, my e-reader took an odd notion and refused to recognize any of the books in my library or downloads. That was when I started taking along a print book too if we were gone any length of time. (I had to re-load the entire ebook reader, which made me threaten to throw it against the wall and get a new one. It is still very cranky sometimes. Maybe it has too many books loaded on it.)

Ereader: How do I love thee? Let me count the ways: 1) I can adjust the font where I can see without a struggle 2) I can listen to audiobooks when I'm driving, cooking, cleaning, doing something tedious 3) I can read in the dark with no lights on. 4) 365 books take up less space than 1 on my shelf!

I use a Mac and an iPad though, and neither one seems to have any trouble with being permanently logged in (to LT, Flightradar24, Atlas Obscura and a few other things). I haven't rebooted the Mac on which I am now typing since mid-January when it came back from Doha.

>6 gmathis: True story. A local school teacher rode around with an entire library in her trunk and seats of her large white (boat) car. She would eat at the Country Kitchen in Midway. When she passed, they sold her home. The new couple happily discovered a huge stash of money hidden in the ceiling/insulation area of the home. It paid for a big portion of their mortgage.

When your "not read" pile is just shy of 500 TBR's and, no matter how many books you read in a given year, it remains just shy of 500 TBR's at year's end.

Are you a bibliomaniac If when you go to bed, and you put on the light and look in to your library to say good night to your books?

35dustydigger

I think Anna Quindlen is a bibliomaniac, and wants that ''disease''for her children too;quote

I would be the most content if my children grew up to be the kind of people who think decorating consists mostly of building enough bookshelves.

Woman after my own heart.

In these Covid days so many tv presenters etc are sitting at their home computers jabbering away while I am scanning their bookshelves behind them while ignoring their doubtless important statements.I am suspicious of those with absolutely perfect shelves, which looked untouched by human hands. The more there are books lying higgledy piggledy on top of untidy shelvesthe happier I am! lol. They have too many books, and actually LOOK at books on a regular basis.Anna Quindlen would certainly tell them new''decorating'' is needed.......

I know Im a bibliophile when after two days of living deep into the books world, it takes me at least that long to come back to reality and stop thinking about it, or try to talk about with people! Im also that person at a bookstore when I see someone pick up a title and i just have to say, oh I loved that book!

Well, I purchased a kindle for my own reading to protect our house.

My husband has taken over all the bookshelves anyway. Unfortunately, my husband does not like to read ebooks so we have books in the hall closet, on every floor, every shelf etc. He bought an extra bookcase but it needed to be put together. Finally some friends of ours got tired of seeing the box sitting around for more than 6 months so they put it together. Then I filled it with lots of books from all our horizontal surfaces downstairs - kitchen table, living room table, floors etc. BUT….I forgot the hall closet — floor to ceiling. Too late! No room in the book case!

The next day, what did he do? Order 5 books! I asked if we could make a rule: for every book he orders, he throws out 2. I thought that was a very gentle request, especially since many of them are out of date science books. I haven't received a response yet.

…and so it goes.

Mrs H and I have an interesting relationship with our books. She reads a lot, mainly thrillers, but nearly always discards them after reading. I also read a lot but keep them, and like Mr k4k am very reluctant to either cut down on buying or start discarding. (I usually put my flatpack furniture acquisitions together pretty promptly though.)

Hi everybody! I understand this thread is for "readers over sixty". I'm over eighty, I'm new here, I hope I may say a word about book addiction. I learned to read and write using mobile letters in the small traditional family printing shop last century and millennium. I've been reading and writing all my life long. I thought myself a writer, I became a bibliophile, I am only a dinosaur bibliomaniac. Please judge me by my bookshelves ...I will judge you by your books
