Change group name?

LT was looking for administrators for various orphaned groups including this one. I volunteered and found myself appointed. I hope nobody has any objections, but I'll step down willingly if there's a consensus against my appointment and in favour of someone else.

One Catholic member who has posted often on this group has suggested changing the name of the group from Catholic Tradition to Catholicism. The use of the word "Tradition" can be misconstrued in the light of culture wars, particularly in the USA, where the term is often applied to a particular minority group within Catholicism. On the other hand, Tradition is a key part of Catholicism, and it could be argued that the term simply recognises that we are all part of the Tradition of our faith, wherever we position ourselves within our broad church. Certainly the posts on this group over the years represent all strands of Catholicism, from the most "progressive" to the most "conservative", and long may that continue. "Catholic" actually means universal.

I'm open to changing the name, but I'm not a dictator (or a pope) and I'd be interested to hear from other group members.

I'm fine with the name as is and would prefer it to stay.

I think it does suggest a key aspect of our faith, Sacred Tradition, and that's probably particularly significant in reference to books (harder to express the charismatic or ascetical practices in books). It can also be expanded on - there's a literary Catholic tradition (or at least inheritance).

I do think the description does a good job of ruling out an interpretation that this group is just for Traditionalists of a certain liturgical bent. And, as you note, the name certainly hasn't kept out any type of Catholic.

As with gabriel, I like the group title as is, but for a different reason. It makes me smile. The word Tradition brings a live performance of Topol as Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof to mind, which played at the old O'Keefe Centre in Toronto in the 90s. His rousing rendition of 'Tradition' was one of the highlights of my dozen years in the city. Having read through my RSVCE last year, I was struck by the fact that the OT was 1005p. and the NT was 250p. The unity between the two, one as the fulfillment of the other, just makes me happy. =)

FYI, I stepped away for a time, due to a misunderstanding, but when I read this week that Facebook planned to ban bible/scripture quotes from its platform, my ire rose to the surface, although I have never used social media. This is my attempt to support the Faith and its imperative presence in the world.

Thanks, Francine. Glad to see that you are back. I came across one of your old posts the other day and I wondered where you had got to. Welcome.

>6 John5918: The unfortunate dilemma of too much interaction and opinion, which leaves less time for actual reading of Truth. Trying to consolidate my groups was supposed to help pare down my efforts. Also, now that I understand the name change to John 5918, having skimmed your profile page, I am embarrassed to think that you took a concerted swipe at me, back when. My humble apologies.

Where on earth did you read this? Breitbart?

See here:

I suggest you post some religious quotations on FB and see what happens.

>8 Crypto-Willobie: I don't know what Breitbart is. I have never used social media, so I won't start now. We have no tv, nor do I use streaming or Netflix services, nor do my current events include mainstream media news outlets (print or audio/video), nor have I ever used Google, Amazon, etc. I came across the article while researching something else.

My father raised four daughters and never once were we allowed to discuss religion, sex, politics. Forgive me if I cannot debate effectively, nor feel inclined to reach for any defense.

My apologies if I "took a concerted swipe" at you. I don't remember it, which is probably for the best all round! Currently I'm writing the biography of one of our retired Catholic bishops, and it will include a quote from a missionary priest who worked closely with him: "Sometimes he could really make me angry. But now I've forgotten why. Thanks be to God for my bad memory!” Amen!

Ah, I see. No, I'm afraid I know quite a few locomotive numbers better than I know my bible quotes! 5918 is an East African Beyer-Garratt steam locomotive named "Mount Gelai", a 250 ton behemoth which still survives in the Nairobi railway museum and which I have had the privilege of maintaining and operating. Coincidentally on a clear day I can see the real Mount Gelai from my balcony. But I'm sorry if it caused any misunderstanding or upset.

What I mean by all that is that it is not the case that "Facebook plan{s} to ban bible/scripture quotes from its platform". Someone with an agenda is lying to you.

I myself have quoted scripture on Facebook with no problem.

Going back to the OP, there doesn't seem to be any great clamour to change the name of the group, so I suggest we remain with the status quo.
