Mythical creatures. Road Trip. Children's book.

All I really remember from it is that it's a children's picture book where these two kids go on a road trip (perhaps with their uncle or aunt) and they see all these mythical creatures and learn about them. I think there was a rhyming component to it, and the creatures they saw, that I remember, were sirens, a phoenix, I think and these tall spindly human looking things that had to be offered food or something bad would happen. They saw more, I'm sure that I don't remember. The whole book was vaguely threatening, one of those creepy children's books. I don't know how to describe the art style but it's kind of similar, I think, to How I became a Pirate. Thank you!
