CURRENTLY READING

(Print) (Audio) (Kindle)

Hi All!

For anyone new to my thread, I'm Katie: reader, wine drinker, food appreciator, shenanigan-ator, and non-sufferer of fools. I live outside New York City with my husband, "The" Wayne, our cat, Leonard, and our dog Nuala/Noodles. I work as a senior governance manager for a non-profit engineering association, which used to be fun because I got to travel and now is just a big pile of meh.

Here's to a great, or at least an improved, new year!

13 Ways of Looking at a Fat Girl by Mona Awad

In 13 linked stories, we follow Elizabeth (sometimes known as Liz, Beth, or Lizzie) from a young teenager to a divorced woman. Through it all, she battles her weight and dissatisfaction with her own body. Even as she sheds pounds, her psychological issues come into sharper focus and the legacy of parental disapproval, body shaming, and self-hatred is made clear. This was not a fun or easy read, but Awad's writing is sharp.

Last night, we dusted off the old Wii and played some Mario Party. According to the saved information, we hadn't played since 2012. I'm not sure that's right, but it had definitely been a while. We made our own microwave popcorn in a brown paper bag and had lots of fun. How had I never made popcorn in the microwave before? Super easy - kernels in a little brown bag, 3 minutes or so, toss with some extra virgin olive oil and salt and pepper, presto. It was fabulous.

Today will be some cleaning, some reading, and some football. I'll be rooting for Green Bay and Buffalo (Hi Bonnie!).

Etta Candy was a feisty strong side kick to Wonder Woman and leader of the Halliday Girls, a group of women from a girls high school who also have great adventures with WW. They did a nice job casting her in the first WW movie, sad that the character didn't turn up in the new one.

New Boy by Tracy Chevalier

Part of the Hogarth Shakespeare series, New Boy is Tracy Chevalier's reimagining of Othello set on a middle school playground in a suburb of Washington, DC in the 1970s. Tweens aren't a bad stand-in for the petty, vengeful, and easily influenced characters of Shakespeare's play, but I did find some of the actions, motivations, and inner thoughts of them to be unrealistic for the age. That said, the novel is a clever piece of writing with all the principals present - outsider Osei (Othello), pretty and kind Dee (Desdemona), and sly villain Ian (Iago). And it's just as tragic as the original.

We are just finishing up the paperwork on the car - hope to have it delivered by the end of the week. It's a gas/plug-in hybrid BMW 5 series. Black (yawn) sedan (double yawn) with charcoal (triple yawn) interior. TW is excited. I realized I didn't care enough to get invested in the process, so left it to him. It's been a bit of a hassle getting Carvana and our bank (BoA) to talk to each other to finalize the financing, but it ain't my problem *grin*

51katiekrug
Ene 25, 2021, 10:56 am

>49 Crazymamie: - For the most part, Carvana has been fine, and you can't beat the convenience. TW will do anything to avoid the usual car-buying experience. Last time we used CarMax, which was way better than a "regular" dealer, but there isn't one close by us. We were going to finance through Carvana, but the rate wasn't great, and our bank gave us an excellent one.

>50 lauralkeet: - TW enjoys a nice car, and it's a couple of years old so someone else has already eaten a lot of the devaluation - at least that's what he tells me... I just hope he likes it as much as he thinks he will. Carvana does have a 7-day trial period once you get the car, so if he hates it, it's not the end of the world.

>36 katiekrug: Cruising back to your review of New Boy...I was waiting to hear how that one hit you. I liked it the least of all the Hogarth Shakespeare re-tellings that I have read so far, and I have had issues with most of them. (Not that I consider Shakespeare sacrosanct, by any means.) I thought it was too obviously doing what it was doing, and only gave it 2 stars. Ann Tyler's Vinegar Girl and Margaret Atwood's Hag Seed are the best of the 5 I've read. Macbeth and Dunbar are so far untested. I understood Gillian Flynn was to do Hamlet for publication in 2021, but the Random House website has nothing on it.

>62 laytonwoman3rd: - I don't have much to compare this Hogarth to, as I've only read one other (VG), but I get that you mean about it being obvious. And that was, in a way, my problem with it - she wanted to make, for instance, Ian think and act like Iago, but I just couldn't buy into an 11-year old thinking or acting that way. I really think she kind of wrote herself into a corner choosing the setting she did. I was probably generous in my rating, but it did keep me turning the pages, despite knowing (sort of) how it would end.

Hi Katie. I'm with you on rooting against any team for which Tom Brady plays. I assume you have seen the comments on social media about folks being able to separate Brady from his politics but not Colin Kaepernick.

>67 katiekrug: I love that!!!

Honestly, I have been disappointed with the experience of managing a LFL here in this small town. There were five LFLs within a 1/2-mile radius of our house in Seattle. I think it would be more fun in a town or city where (a) more people walk, and (b) more people read. On the other hand, the fact that our LFL has sort of turned into a puzzle exchange is kind of cool.

I haven't really read any of the Hogarth series and your comments about New Boy make me think this would be a good post-retirement project.

There are several LFLs in our town, but I don't know how much traffic they get. We live at the end of a dead end street, so there's no point in putting one up, though I would love to... How fun that you've been able to use yours for puzzles! (Speaking of which, I got your package today - thank you; and shame on me - I will make time to get to the PO asap!)

I think you are wracking up a lot of retirement projects, my friend ;-)

>73 brenzi: - Well, Bonnie, I do have a lot of sympathy for you, since The Wayne is a Dolphins fan so like you, had to suffer for years and years being dominated by Brady and the Patriots.

Triangle: The Fire That Changed America by David Von Drehle

In 1911, a fire at the Triangle Waist Company in New York City killed 146 people, mostly young immigrant women who were unable to escape the 8th and 9th floors. Some of them jumped from the factory's windows; some jumped down the elevator shaft; some burned a few feet from a door that was likely locked. I'd heard about this disaster and how it led to major labor reforms in the United States, but I knew little of the specifics. Von Drehle has written a solid history, which covers a major strike at the factory in 1909, conditions under which so many Eastern European immigrants came to the US, reform efforts before and after the fire, and the influence of the fire on American politics through the New Deal. Parts of the book are a bit dry, but the background stories of some of the major figures involved and of the victims is interesting, and the description of the fire itself is harrowing.

Happy New Thread, Katie.

The only one in that Hogarth Shakespeare series I've read is Margaret Atwood's Hag-Seed, which I liked a lot. I like Tracy Chevalier's books, and New Boy sounds well done, if unrealistic. I'd read that unrealistic reaction in another review somewhere, which I remember as stemming from middle-graders acting too adult.

Crap day yesterday - busy at work (my own fault) and just this weird underlying anxious feeling of dread or something. Ugh. Hoping for a better day today!

Dinner was sweet chili pork with green beans over rice - very tasty but needed more sauce. The Wayne wanted to watch The Siege of Jadotville, and I was like "whatever" but it was actually pretty good. It's based on a true story that I'd never heard of about a company of Irish soldiers on a UN peacekeeping mission in the Congo in 1961. Worth a watch if you're into that sort of thing, or if you like cute men with nice accents.

So last night, The Wayne had a late work call so we ordered dinner in. I got an Italian sausage, peppers, and onion sandwich with mozzarella. Ummm, YUM! Then we watched 3 episodes in the first season of The West Wing. TW is really enjoying it, which kind of surprised me because he tends to like "a little less conversation, a little more action" in his viewing.

We had some sort of onion crunch chicken and green beans for dinner last night. Not my favorite from HelloFresh, but not terrible. We didn't watch anything, so I futzed around, read a bit, played on the 'puter, and went to bed.

Ooof, I didn't get up until almost 10:00 this morning. I was up late, babysitting the end of the fire that we were enjoying in the family room. I'm so paranoid, I wouldn't go up to bed until every last ember was out. So a bit of a late night...

We had movie night - one TW pick (Godzilla: King of the Monsters) and one me pick (You've Got Mail). The former was silly fun and the latter, which I hadn't seen since soon after it came out, was delightful. TW said he enjoyed it more than he expected to. Result!

We had takeaway for dinner from a local dive that is trying to survive being open one night a week. It's sort of a town institution, and we had never been or ordered from them so decided to give it a try. TW had ribs and fries (the ribs were excellent and we are VERY picky) and I had clam chowdah and onion rings (don't judge me).

Laundry and general picking up around the house today. I need to do a little bit of work-work, but other than that, lots of reading and some puzzling, I hope. I'd like to finish Mexican Gothic by the end of the weekend, which should be doable.

"clam chowdah and onion rings" What's to judge? Sounds like a marvelous combination to me.

On the subject of take-out, since there was so much talk of Mexican here....what works well for take-out? We have a Mexican restaurant (chain) we like OK, but we've never tried taking it out. Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Once I realized this was more horror than gothic, I knew it was not going to work for me. I'm not scared or discomfited by horror. I just don't find it very interesting. And this novel took forever to get going, so I was already slightly annoyed. And the writing was weird in parts and took me out of the story.

"Florence drank from her wine, the slim stem carefully lifted and pressed against her lips." Um, why was she pressing the stem to her lips?

The phrase, late in the book, "Church of the Incestuous Mushroom was just so on-point but also ridiculous that I laughed out loud. It would have worked in a review panning the book, but having a character say it just highlighted the nonsense nature of the whole endeavor.

All that said, I did appreciate the unique setting and context, and despite the occasional odd word choice or turn of phrase, Moreno-Garcia obviously has talent. So it wasn't a total loss, but overall, I'm not thrilled that I spent 5 days with it.

Also, mushrooms are gross. I've always thought so, I never eat them, and this book was a total vindication of my position on fungi.

I went to bed last night with maybe an inch of snow on the ground. It was coming down very lightly, and I said to myself, "Self, no way is this amounting to much."

I woke up this morning to about 7-8" and it is still coming down steadily and is supposed to all day. So I said to myself, "Self, you're an idiot."

We've shoveled the sidewalk and front walk and front steps and driveway once. We were supposed to get the new car today, but I don't think that's happening, which is fine, because we have a very short driveway and two cars won't fit, and I don't want to park one on the street. The garage, of course, is not available for actually parking a car. *ahem*

I had a bit of a mishap yesterday with our rental. I misjudged a left turn into a parking lot and hit the curb/storm drain and broke something. The Wayne thinks I only damaged the plastic splash guard underneath, but I feel like an idiot. It was also embarrassing because there were people around and they all stopped and stared. Oy.

In book news, having finally finished Mexican Gothic, I picked up Blessings by Anna Quindlen, which has been on my shelf since April 2004. Oops. I'm only one chapter in, but I think it will be a nice, gentle read. I was alternating the e-book and audio of MG to get through it faster, so I'll return my audio attention to The Boyfriend Project now.

I'm debating whether to do a monthly summary as I did last year. It became a bit of a chore, so I might just modify it and note the stats that I care most about. We'll see.

>255 katiekrug: Beautiful view you have out your back, especially covered with fresh snow. We were "promised" 3-10 days of snow per year when we moved here. It snowed for a couple of days last week but not a flake stuck and that's all we've had. It's February so it had better hurry up.

The back deck this morning:

We spent 2 hours shoveling, mostly digging the car out and clearing the driveway apron where the town plow dumped a bunch of snow. Annoying. I did a half-assed job on the front steps and walkway, but at least it's navigable now. I have a pinched nerve or tendonitis or something in my forearm that is driving me crazy. It's been bothersome for a few days, but all the shovel gripping has made it worse. Bah!

Last night for dinner we had Philly-ish cheesesteaks and watched Grumpy Old Men.

The new car has arrived! We took it for a quick spin (The Wayne had a meeting he had to get to) at the delivery dude's invitation, and it's super nice, but my gawd, I'm going to be scared to drive it. Apparently it has a heads-up display on the windshield, that shows your speed and stuff. And there are many buttons. And it's so quiet in electric mode. And it smells so nice. And the guy apologized that it had some dirt on it from the drive up the highway, so we are getting a $100 gift card for a detailing. NOICE.

Oof, virtual happy hour last night. I was fine for it. Should not have had that last glass once we hung up, though :-/ But I made it to the gym and feel much better now.

I finished up Blessings this morning while sucking down coffee. I'll write up some comments in a bit, but the short version is I really liked it.

Empanadas for dinner last night - there is a great restaurant here that makes really good pizza and amazing empanadas. Weird, I know. I had a meatball parm one and a beef and cheese one. Delicious. And a cannoli cream and Nutella drizzle one for dessert :)

Mmm, I will always try anything with Nutella.

Glad the gym was a feel-good workout today. Nice way to slide into the weekend.

Why can't you just add the link to a new thread at the bottom of this one? People will be able to find it and star it that way. Several people who are having this problem did that and it's pretty seamless.

Blessings by Anna Quindlen

"And here she sat in solitary splendor with a tuna fish sandwich and two olives, as she had done for years and years, happily, or at least contentedly. All broken now, the happiness or contentment or resignation or whatever it was a person felt when the repeated customs of her life had become that life itself."

Lydia Blessing is 80 years old and lives a rigid life. She is disapproving of most things and people and seems to exist on a steady diet of memories and unacknowledged regrets. So it's surprising, not least of all to herself, that when her caretaker finds an abandoned baby girl on his doorstep, she decides to help him take care of her. What follows is a lovely, gentle story of two people doing the wrong thing for the right reasons and learning what it means to connect and grow and finally face those unacknowledged regrets. Blessings is a novel about families - lost ones, found ones, and made ones. Reading it was like slipping into a warm bath - relaxing and comforting and escapist.

Amanda, it is inappropriate on LT to promote your books on a personal thread. You need to go here to do that:

Happy Saturday, Katie. I am back from my trip to the Great White North. Funny, colder here than it was there. It will stay frigid here through next week, keeping me indoors. I can catch up on my reading, since I read nothing on my trip. I hope you and the Wayne are doing fine.

Have you and TW been to the Corning Museum of Glass yet? Look at this less-than-10-minute YouTube video to see one of their demonstrations: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3LqF05S9Z-o&ab_channel=CorningMuseumofGlass

Gym done (we don't usually go on Saturdays, but we missed Monday due to the snow storm...). "Man-killer burpees" can fuck ALL THE WAY OFF, as far as I'm concerned.

Apparently, we are supposed to get more snow tomorrow. The snow blower is supposed to arrive tomorrow. Hmmm.....

I'm planning to take it easy today. I'll do a load or two of laundry, but other than that, I'm not making myself do anything I don't wanna.

Last night, we had Thai green curry with chicken and watched (TW's pick) 'Zulu.' I was too tired for another movie, so tonight will be my choice.

Morning, Katie! I took an LT break because I had an CT flare up, but now I am SO far behind. Oof. Anyway, the new car looks most attractive and hooray for the bells and whistles once you get used to them.

I am adding Blessings to your Dirty Dozen despite your saying, "Reading it was like slipping into a warm bath..." Um...don't you hate baths?

377katiekrug
Feb 6, 2021, 11:35 am

>376 Crazymamie: - Morning, Mamie! I was wondering if anyone would pick up on that - I should have known you would 🙂 I guess I should have said something about it being like a bath as most people experience them, though I hate them. Ha! It was the best analogy I could think of, though...

Sorry about the CT flare-up. My arm was doing better but our workout this morning made it hurt again. Blerg.

378Crazymamie
Feb 6, 2021, 11:42 am

I also hate a bath, which is why I remembered.

The CT flare-up is a pain - I was going to have the surgery for it last year, but we ended up having a zombie apocalypse, so...Maybe later this year. Sorry about your arm, too. I think in order to take preventative measures you should never do "Man-killer burpees" again. I mean, safety first and all that.

How on earth did I get so far behind on your thread, Katie? Caught up now though. 1) congratulations on the beyouuutiful new car! I prefer my cars to be the color of local dirt but gray is very chic. 2) empanada are wonderful -- hadn't thought of them since we moved -- must make some soon...or some pasties 3) hope you aren't too sore from those delightful burpees 4) happy weekend!

I've been doing online exercise classes and the tutor gave us Burpees this week. We were all less than impressed. But, as she pointed out, with us all on mute we could call her all the names under the sun and she really didn't care.

Hoping the snow blower arrives just ahead of the snow. >:-)

Happy Saturday. Mine involved a Zoom meeting (for which I'm putting off writing minutes) gardening and another zoom meeting (where I was just listening in, doing cross stitch at the same time). Hope yours is/was better.

We got about six inches of snow this week. My neighbor did my sidewalk while he did his, which is so nice. Then, I started on my driveway, did about half and then left to run some errands. When I came back, my driveway and a path to my trashcans was magically cleared. My son-in-law is the best! Long story short, I've done little shoveling this year.

I hope you don't get too much snow and your snow blower arrives.

Nice car.

Hi, Katie. Good review of Blessing. Based on the description of her at the beginning, I wouldn't have expected the book to be warm and escapist.

I'm reading the escapist new Easy Rawlins mystery, Blood Grove, and it's great to be back in stride with Easy.

>380 Crazymamie: - Same!

>381 Helenliz: - That is one advantage of online classes, Helen. But I like cursing out Joel the Devil in person ;-)

The snowblower arrived mid-storm!

My Saturday was just fine - no Zoom meetings!

>382 BLBera: - That's so nice of your neighbor and your son-in-law, Beth. During the big storm, I was hoping our neighbor, who we've met and chatted with, would offer to snowblow us, but no such luck... But now we have our own, so it's all good!

>383 jnwelch: - Thanks re: my review, Joe. The book was a nice surprise.

I've only read Devil in a Blue Dress....

>384 Familyhistorian: - Thanks, Meg. The snowblower was delivered amid the storm. The Wayne loves it :)

>385 figsfromthistle: - Thanks, figs. I finally drove the car yesterday and couldn't see the H.U.D. The Wayne had adjusted the brightness or something...

The rental return went fine. But I had to pay them $500 extra (my insurance deductible). Blerg.

Last night we had air fryer pork chops and roasted carrots and potatoes. We played Mario Party and I, as usual, got my butt kicked.

We woke up this morning to overcast skies and then it started snowing soon after. I think we ended up with another 6" or so. It's very light and fluffy though, so not too bad to clean up. TW made bacon and reheated the leftover roasted carrots and potatoes and I made scrambled eggs for myself (he doesn't eat eggs) - we don't often make "real" breakfasts, but it sure hit the spot today. Amazon delivered our snowblower in the late morning, so TW was able to use it to clear our front walk and sidewalk and driveway. Then we played some Wii games, and I managed to read a bunch, and then we prepped our Super Bowl taco bar and stuffed our faces :) Now rooting against Tom Brady, but not really paying full attention to the game.

I'll start a new thread tomorrow, as rumor has it, the continuation link issue has been resolved.

I hope y'all had a good weekend!

Books:

I'm almost done with both Emperor of the Air and When They Call You a Terrorist. I'll probably finish the latter tonight or tomorrow.
