I’m hoping to pull from the knowledge of others here. I recently bought an older folio second hand and it has that distinct musty smell that often happens when books have been left unattended for years. Does anyone have any recommendations for how to get rid of the smell in a way that won’t cause damage?

Thanks for pointing this out.

I put small quantity of Baking Soda in a tight bag and left the books in a cold place for two weeks. Some people also left them in the fridge but I didn't have space there. It did remove smell somewhat. Furthermore, left the book in open after that for few more days.

>1 l.gallagher: baking soda in a sealed container certainly helps. Might not eliminate the smell but certainly reduces it.

I have several books with this problem - makes me feel very unkeen on buying FS second hand - and baking soda in a sealed container did nothing, unfortunately. I even ordered one of those odor eliminating bags but there's no improvement.

I think that solution would have to take a very long time to work. If you could circulate the air and flip open to different parts of the book from time to time in that sealed container it would accelerate the process considerably. Depending on where you bought something second hand, you could try returning books on the grounds of them not being as expected (no indication of odor problems,etc...).
