Hello,

When I am viewing my library, via the TAB that reads YOUR BOOKS- I have the following headings: TITLE, AUTHOR, DATE, TAGS, RATING, ENTRY.

I was thinking it would be nice to have another slot for ORIGINAL DATE OF PUBLICATION. ( though that is really long )

On my older books, I find it nice to have a frame of reference. For instance, I know that SCARLET LETTER was written " a long time ago- lol". It would be nice to have a slot that says 1850; gives me a historic point of reference. Currently, I am putting 1850- as my first tag, so that it is the first thing that I see when I am viewing the chart. However, that makes a great many more tags than I, personally, desire. I know many people want lots of tags, but I am trying to keep mine basic. Also, I don't care as much about dating contemporary books, ( though I might later), especially not college textbooks. Lastly, for certain works, such as those by Homer, or Dante, there needs to be enough room for a range, since there is no specific date to offer.

Thank you

>1 EGBERTINA: Above your books on the "Your books" tab there is a button with a cog that says "settings". From there you can change the fields that you see when you look at your books, and can add fields from the right side of the page, such as original publication date.

OOps, I spoke to soon.

All that is now showing is 1966 twice, ( one example ). So, I cannot actually enter 1850- because the main edit slot still remains singular

Is that making sense?

>4 EGBERTINA: Did you bring across the right field? There's 'Publication Date' in the Basic group, and 'Original publication date' in Common Knowledge.

Publication date is the date your book was published, original is the very first time that book was ever published. A lot of the time it will be the same, but where there's multiple editions, they won't be.

Also you can set up five different viewing styles (A, B, C, D, E) with different sets of data columns

Okay. That worked for sure. Is there a way to edit? For instance, Dante's Inferno- has correct dates of 1308-1320; and adds first printed 1472- which is interesting- but has little to do with my translation. One of my translation's is by Longfellow- so might want to include that date. ( First I have to figure out- who and how- in the past week, changed my data on that. It showed up with no cover- which I understand, NOW, is an Amazon thing- which I am avoiding in the future- but how did the translator get changed? I was very specific in my two translations. )...

... Anyhow, I see that when I double click on original publication- I am making changes for everybody- so, I don't really wish to mess with that....

Please advise. I don't think I will want to edit much- now that I see these items have already been calculated.

Thank you

>7 EGBERTINA: Double-click in the box. Publication date there's only one possible entry; original publication date you can add multiple rows.

As you commented, OPD is common to everyone, so it's best left alone unless it's egregiously wrong (like 2001 for a book first published in 1801), or missing entirely.

For different translators, you need to include the specific translator in the 'Other authors' with the role of translator. If you look in my catalogue, and search for the author 'Beowulf Poet', you'll see 2 different versions with different secondary authors.

Is there a "FREE-style" tab that I could insert- so that I could enter that which I want to see- without desecrating the "Common Knowledge" tab?

Comments - there's Comments which is visible to all, and Private Comments only visible to you. They are in the Personal section of the settings.

Publication field (just publication, as opposed to publication date) is convenient for all sorts of info about your book, including multiple dates, edition and printing info and such. Summary field is also editable and searchable and can be used for more than automatic title-author-year summary. Two comments sections mentioned by Maddz are all-purpose, so those too.

You can also do what I do.....put whatever original publication date you want in your particular book's "Publication Date" field. I don't care about particular edition publication dates, so I put the original publication date in that field for all of my books. That field is specific to my copy of the book, unlike the Original Publication Date field, so it won't mess up anyone else's data if I put what I want in it.
