Trump Betrays, Not Defends, the Constitution; Incites Civil War

Aided by his two primary Senate enablers, Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz, and a coterie of fellow travelers in Congress, Donald Trump incited an insurrection in Washington, D.C., telling his radicalized and anti-American supporters to "March on the Capitol," where both chambers were accepting the results of the safest, fairest, and most verified election in US history, as dictated by the Constitution.

In a total FAILURE of political leadership from the Republican Party -- the party in Control -- the Trumpist mob stormed and overwhelmed the Capitol Police, breached security and entered the Capitol Building, parading through Statuary Hall, intimidating a Capitol Police officer and pursuing him through the halls and floors until some of his colleagues came to his aid and created a standoff.

Thousands of rioters gained ingress into both chambers, provoking a point blank resistance by law enforcement, guns drawn on one side of the House windows and aimed at the insurrectionists who broke the windows of the main doors to the House and forced their way in. House members had been safely evacuated, along with VP Pence whose letter issued earlier in the day, defied Trump's direction that he steal the election from the people by "kidnapping" legitimate Electors, appointing new ones who would deliver Trump a victory he never earned.

During the insurrection's most active period of terror, lawmakers were told to take cover under their desks, or shelter in place if outside the chambers before they were safely evacuated. Once secured, lawmakers from both parties began to communicate, calling for Trump's immediate impeachment, for him to be removed via Amendment 25. Sens. Cruz and Johnson issued flacid pleas that he tweet (!) his supporters and "ask" them to go home. Trump did nothing. A press release from the WH stated that Trump was "monitoring events, watching news casts on several TVs."

(President) Biden appeared live on TV and fully condemned the rioters, the rioters enablers (senators and representatives), and Donald Trump, whom he labeled the inciter, for causing and being directly responsible for the violence.

Once reinforcements arrived, the D.C. Metropolitan Police, excluding National Guard because Trump would not order them to assist in protecting lives and federal buildings gunfire was heard coming from inside the Capitol Bldg. Several minutes later, a woman was carried from the building on a stretcher, covered in blood, and first responders desperately trying to recusitate her with an oxygen mask as they ran along side. Latest reports list her in critical condition. Several others were injured, requiring medical attention, including Cap. Pol.

Additionally at least two IEDs have been discovered on Capitol grounds. The timeline indicates that they may have been the initial diversion, designed to pull focus and personnel away from the Capitol itself to deal with those dangers.

Once it became apparent that rioters were being rounded up and security beginning to be restored, a taped message from Trump aired. It was the usual Trump lies in re "stolen election" and barely disguised Mafia speak of passive aggressive instructions to his civilian army to not really cut it off and stand down.

As I type, police -- still no Nat'l. Guard -- are dispersing people from the steps of the Capitol by use of gas and herding. As night falls, the situation still remains volatile and dangerous. Rioters continue to roam the mall. Continued acts of domestic terrorism are expected and surrounding states are sending troopers and their Nat'l. Guard troops to D.C. to defend the Republic. BREAKING: VA state police and SWAT are working their way through Dirksen Bldg.

But efforts to obtain victory over the insurrectionists is nothing like the June violent clearing of peaceful law-abiding citizens so Trump could get a selfie of him holding a Bible upside down outside a church.

Expect the recently named USAG to establish a special team of investigators to pore over photos, videos, and phone data in order to identify, charge, try and imprison the guilty. Which should include Trump, Hawley, and Cruz, Giuliani, and crackpot representatives and senate cosigners of the coup attempt documents. ,i>Anything less than charges of treason against Trump and charges of inciting a riot against him, Giuliani, and all the Republican cheerleaders would be a miscarriage of justice.

This, Sen. Hawley, is what law-breaking and destruction look like. This is what mobs do. This is not a protest, but a riot. One woman was shot and has died, The Washington Post reported, while lawmakers were sheltering in place.

Just before the putsch began, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said sadly that we need to once again work from an agreed upon set of facts. Only now has he noticed that lying to the public on a daily basis poisons democracy.

“People have taken this too far,” House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said on Fox News. Until he had to run for cover, McCarthy was fine with this sick stunt.

U.S. Rep. Andy Barr, a Republican from Kentucky, said in a statement, “Today’s events at the U.S. Capitol are tragic, outrageous, and devastating. They are wholly inconsistent with the values of our constitutional Republic.”

Yes, they are. But they are wholly consistent with Trump’s calls to overturn this election to address nonexistent fraud. And they are wholly predictable, given the willingness of most Republicans to repeat these baseless claims.

No doubt plenty of Americans will see even this free-for-all in the temple of democracy as defensible. And those of you who have excused all of the brazen lawlessness of this administration can take a little bit of credit for these events, too. They couldn’t have done it without you.

Joining some others of their colleagues in emphasizing they will arrest and prosecute anyone who resides in their districts who traveled to DC to participate in the riots, even though both are Trump appointees and intend to honor the tradition of resigning their office at a change of power in the WH.

BREAKING: CBS Reports Cabinet Meeting on Invoking 25th Amendment

Cabinet Discussing whether or not to remove Trump from office. Cabinet secretaries have not yet presented the process to Vice President Mike Pence, but that they are discussing the next steps. Pence is at present presiding as President of the Senate as it conducts debate on counting the ECVs and accepting the reality that Biden was elected.

President Donald Trump, his son Donald Trump Jr. and Rudy Giuliani all made statements at the so-called "Stop the Steal" rally that encouraged the attacks. While Trump told his supporters to be peaceful, he also continued to suggest that they had to fight for their election.

Angry Republicans at the U.S. Capitol are thinking about it as well, CNN.com reported late Wednesday night.

"He has to be impeached and removed," said a current Republican elected official who wouldn't allow their name to be used.

"I think this has been a huge shock to the system," said one former official agreeing.. "How do you keep him in place for two weeks after this?"

Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) who has been one of the leaders to overturn the will of the voters denied any culpability for the fatal insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday.

So a simply majority of whoever is left in the Cabinet would work.

One reading of this is as follows--

If the president is declared incapacitated and then the president declares himself to have capacity, then the four-day period starts where the vice president is still acting president.

If the president isn't re-declared incapacitated after four days, the president resumes being president.

But if the president is re-declared incapacitated during those four days, the vice president continues to be the acting president, and Congress has 21 days to agree (but with a supermajority) the president is incapacitated.

So if a majority of the Cabinet and the VP say, hey, we think you need a mental break, the president can say "no, I'm fine", the VP is still acting president. Congress can declare the president to be not fine, and he stays incapacitated, with the VP as acting president, until after his term in office expires.

BREAKING!: Cabinet Members Lining Up to RESIGN; Mitch McConnell Frantically Phoning to Forestall

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has been frantically calling White House staffers and asking them to hold off on resigning from the Trump administration and stay onboard for at least a few more hours, until things are clearer. Several major members of the Trump administration are considering stepping down in the wake of the deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol by Trump supporters, and the president's failure to adequately condemn the violence.

While the President Trump egged on a mob of his supporters who had stormed the United States Capitol on Wednesday, several of his top aides began to scramble. Their mission, according to three sources familiar with the matter: to try to convince senior White House staffers and cabinet secretaries to stay in the administration, if only just for the night.

McConnell "has been busy making calls to the White House in an effort to try and maintain cohesiveness for the next few hours at a minimum," reported Asawin Suebsaeng, Erin Banco, and Lachlan Markay. "As Trump aides rushed to keep the departures to a minimum and perform some semblance of damage control, the president vented his fury that politicians and people on cable news were already starting to hold him responsible for the day's mayhem, according to two people familiar with the situation. Predictably, Trump held the position that it wasn't his fault, and that a strong public denunciation was not necessary at the time, the sources relayed."

Meanwhile, lower-level administration officials wondered what the hell their bosses were up to. “Where is Acting Attorney General Rosen right now? Hiding under a desk? Polishing his resume? He certainly failed to prepare for this clearly telegraphed, systematically incited mob attack on our nation's Capitol,” a currently-serving Justice Department prosecutor (said).

At least three WH staffers associated with Melania Trump and WH communications offices have resigned.

As I perceive the timeline of events that were not the riot, the resignation of Melania's chief of staff came on the heels of news of gunshots and the video of the woman who later died being stretchered out of the Capitol. This seems to have prompted the other two resignations by WH communications staff.

Hearing this, I think the article indicates that senior cabinet secretaries (and poss. staff?) then began to line up with their intentions to resign. One of them being Moscow Mitch's wife. She may have been the one to phone him with what was transpiring and her intention and that may have been the call that got Mitch to "frantically" work the phone, calling the secretaries and also their staff members trying to get them to hold off.

Now, Mitch was in lockdown, closeted with colleagues who began expressing their anger at Trump because they understood how the violence could harm; he heard them voicing their feelings that Trump had to go. The penny dropped. Aware of how the wind was blowing, Mitch begged the secretaries to meet this evening, once House and Senate returned to business and consider invoking the 25th. Or, perhaps one of the disgusted secretaries said that the only way he/she would refrain from resigning was if the cabinet met and considered invoking Amend. 25. "Either Trump goes, or I go."

And here we are. Waiting to find out what the Cabinet secy's concluded -- resign themselves or remove Trump. I am aware and posted tonight on LT that former FBI agent said the Agency needs to be planning the "involuntary removal" of the president immediately. That led me to believe that he was aware of such plans but was couching his remarks in such a way that they sounded like a personal opinion.

Because, of course, if the cabinet is considering invoking the 25th, they will need to discuss plans for Trump's physical removal should they do so, and would prudently ask the DoJ to make preparations.

Finally, multiple stories are coming out from many WH sources that Trump has lost it, one friend of Trump reportedly kept repeating over and over "he has lost his mind."

The Attorney General for the District of Columbia, Karl Racine, calls on Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Trump.

"Do your constitutional duty. Protect America, stand up for democracy, and invoke the 25th Amendment.

"That requires Vice President Pence to move and get a majority of the Cabinet or majority of the Congress to immediately remove the President because he so clearly is not fit for office," said Racine.

Giuliani butt dials the wrong senator, and thinks he's leaving a message for Tuberville. He desperately wants Tuberville to object to EVERY state's certified vote.

I actually think there was a “soft 25th” at some point yesterday.
I think key cabinet members agreed to no longer take orders from Trump, and Pence is basically calling the shots.
They won’t go through the formal process because of logistical hurdles and fear of the mob.

Some top remaining administration officials are preparing to resist any unlawful or dangerous orders in the closing days of Trump's presidency, senior administration officials with direct knowledge of the sensitive conversations tell Axios.

...After Trump incited protesters to storm the Capitol on Wednesday, there's a near universal view among top officials that he is unfit and unhinged

...While several senior officials have already resigned in disgust since the riots, including Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao and Deputy National Security adviser Matt Pottinger, there has been a heavy behind-the-scenes push to urge other top national security officials to stay on as a bulwark against emboldened U.S. enemies.

Multiple Cabinet officials and senators from both parties, including senior Senate Republicans, have privately urged National Security Adviser Robert O'Brien and White House Counsel Pat Cipollone to stay in their jobs for the sake of the nation's security and continuity of government.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also intends to stay on, according to a source briefed on his thinking.

Two senior national security officials told Axios that they and their colleagues at the top level of government have decided to defy any requests they believe would put the nation at risk or break the law. They plan to force Trump to fire them.

Some senior officials at the State Department and other agencies privately discussed the need to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Trump from office. That idea is going nowhere.

Many view it as bad for the country and technically unworkable in such a short period of time.
Senior officials described an awkward and troubling alternative — the reality that they are staying away from the West Wing, avoiding Trump, and hoping to white-knuckle their way to Jan. 20 without having to engage much with him.
Yesterday, Pence directly urged the Pentagon to hurry the deployment of the National Guard to the Capitol.

Both Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi have publicly signaled that Congress may push to impeach Trump a second time if his Cabinet does not invoke the 25th Amendment.*

'Bunker' Trump Mocked As a 'Coward' for Fleeing to Camp David Amid Talk of 25th Amendment

Less than 24 hours after armed insurrectionists seized the U.S. Capitol at the president's urging, Donald Trump fled the city to Camp David. Well. . .I wonder. . .David Figliuzzi, former FBI agent, pointed out during his appearance on MSNBC yesterday that the first thing to do before executing an 'involuntary removal' of a president is to isolate him.

Is it even imaginable that Trump would choose not to go to one of his own golf resorts -- preferably a warm sunny one, like. . .say. . .Mar-a-Lago -- in the middle of freezing winter? Camp David is traditionally the formal "vacation" retreat of presidents only in the summer months where facilities are in place to foster privacy and matters of state, not golfing and matters of grifting suckers. Trump will only be able to "putt" and "drive" while on vacay there.

From where I sit (in pj's, in my parents' basement, in the dark, wearing an eye shade, surfing the web into the wee hours), my p.o.v. is that what we witnessed today is the Figliuzzi isolation step. Wisdom dictates that if the plan in place is to remove Trump from office, the way to avoid a second invasion by the barbarians is to whisk the object of their veneration off to a highly secure, private hide-away, where civilians are not admitted.

The formal name for "Camp David" is the Naval Support Facility Thurmont. As such, you might suspect it's very secure and committed to insuring a president's safety requirements -- all of his safety requirements.

The camp is reportedly one of the most secure facilities in the world, as reported by a Department of Defense journal in 1998. The facility is guarded by one of the United States Marine Corps' most elite units, MSC-CD (Marine Security Company, Camp David). Each Marine is selected from the infantry and sent through a battery of psychological and physical tests. He then must undergo specialized security training at the Marine Corps Security Forces School, in Chesapeake, Virginia. The Marines then report to Marine Barracks, Washington, D.C. Assuming the Marines successfully complete all their schooling, they still must, like their Navy counterparts, attain "Yankee White" security clearance. Only then will the Marines be eligible for the assignment at Camp David. After 12 months of service at Camp David, a Marine is awarded the Presidential Service Badge. Typically, tours at Camp David are 18-24 months.

Sounds like a supermax prison to me.

Trump's weekend vacation seems more and more like an arranged trip, but one not arranged by a travel agent. Both Schumer's demand for Trump's immediate removal, and Pelosi's promise that if Republicans didn't invoke the 25th Amendment, "preferably today," she was ready to do Impeachment II. HINT: something happened. Has anyone actually seen Mike Pence today? The only Veep "peep" has been an announcement that there would be a peaceful transition of power in the AM, and that he would attend Biden's inauguration in the PM.

Let's look at the chronology of today's events, beginning with Sen. Schumar's call to colleagues that they invoke the 25th.

1:04 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 7, 2021 -- Mike Pence Set To Attend Inauguration (announcement issued from his office)
and
FAA issues flight restrictions scheduled to take effect on Friday at 3:30 p.m. -- YET: Donald Trump "flees" to Camp David mid-afternoon Thursday, Jan. 7, 2021.

The flight restriction are scheduled to be lifted Sunday at 2:00 p.m., which reads to me like VIPs may be shuffling back and forth, D.C. WH to "Summer WH" to D.C. WH, or that members of Trump's household are going to be ferried in order to join him and share his vacation at Camp David.

All of these pieces look like a carefully choreographed plan for public acts, signaling shifts and solidifications of agreed upon steps in executing an involuntary removal of a man unfit to serve as president who represents a threat to the lives of Americans.

Don't write off impeachment just yet.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her leadership team are considering a lightning-quick impeachment process if Vice President Mike Pence and the Cabinet refuse to take unprecedented steps to remove President Donald Trump from office in less than two weeks' time, according to multiple Democratic sources.

The stunning intervention to remove a sitting president would need significant bipartisan support to succeed in the Senate, something Democrats don't have yet. But Pelosi has bluntly warned the White House that the House would impeach Trump for "seditious acts" in inciting riots at the Capitol on Wednesday.
"This is urgent -- this is an emergency of the highest magnitude," the California Democrat told reporters Thursday. "My phone has been exploding with 'impeach, impeach, impeach.' "
Top Democrats say there have not been serious discussions yet about impeaching Trump for the second time in his presidency, something that has never been done before.

If Pence and the Cabinet don't invoke the 25th Amendment, Democrats have been discussing a process that would allow them to bypass the committee proceedings and move articles of impeachment directly to the floor within two days.
The discussions are expected to intensify Friday, when House Democrats hold their first full-caucus call since the attack on the US Capitol as a growing number of members press for impeachment.

Any member could offer a privileged resolution, but it has to be when the House is in session. It cannot be a brief pro forma session when no legislative business is conducted. Right now, the House is not scheduled to be back until January 19, but House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, a Maryland Democrat, has not ruled out bringing the House back into session next week.

Once the resolution is offered, it would automatically be put up for a vote within 48 hours. With majority support, the House would impeach Trump, sending it to the Senate for a trial about whether to remove him from office.

But with so little time left in Trump's presidency, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell would essentially be able to run out the clock and avoid a Senate impeachment trial in Trump's remaining few days in office, according to Hill sources.
McConnell declined to comment on the Kentucky Republican's views on invoking the 25th Amendment.

Impeachment wasn't the preferred route going into the day, nor was it considered a likely option for Democratic leaders. But the momentum of members getting behind it creates momentum for something leaders weren't initially planning to pursue.

Seen from afar I simply don't understand why the people who got inside weren't detained. Letting them go and then trying to identify them by photos afterwards? Of course they could claim that they were invited by the POTUS but I think a judge should well be the judge of that or at least have them present their Guest Cards.

The handcuffs are very similar (maybe even identical) to cable tie straps, so a visit to a nearby Walmart or similar should suffice even if the police have run out of supplies.

Insider spoke with three officials on Thursday morning: a French police official responsible for public security in a key section of central Paris, and two intelligence officials from NATO countries who directly work in counterterrorism and counterintelligence operations involving the US, terrorism, and Russia.

They said the circumstantial evidence available pointed to what would be openly called a coup attempt in any other nation. None were willing to speak on the record because of the dire nature of the subject.

While they did not furnish evidence that federal agency officials facilitated the chaos, Insider is reporting this information because it illustrates the scale and seriousness of Wednesday's events: America's international military and security allies are now willing to give serious credence to the idea that Trump deliberately tried to violently overturn an election and that some federal law-enforcement agents — by omission or otherwise — facilitated the attempt.

One NATO source set the stage, using terms more commonly used to describe unrest in developing countries.

"The defeated president gives a speech to a group of supporters where he tells them he was robbed of the election, denounces his own administration's members and party as traitors, and tells his supporters to storm the building where the voting is being held," the NATO intelligence official said.

"The supporters, many dressed in military attire and waving revolutionary-style flags, then storm the building where the federal law-enforcement agencies controlled by the current president do not establish a security cordon, and the protesters quickly overwhelm the last line of police.

"The president then makes a public statement to the supporters attacking the Capitol that he loves them but doesn't really tell them to stop," the official said. "Today I am briefing my government that we believe with a reasonable level of certainty that Donald Trump attempted a coup that failed when the system did not buckle.

"I can't believe this happened."

United States Capitol Police officer died Thursday night from injuries sustained when he engaged with a pro-Trump mob that descended on the U.S. Capitol the day before.

Officer Brian D. Sicknick died at about 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, the Capitol Police said in a statement. He had been with the agency since 2008.

Mr. Sicknick was responding to the riots on Wednesday and “was injured while physically engaging with protesters,” the agency’s statement said, although officials didn’t immediately elaborate on the nature of his injuries or how he interacted with the crowd. The limits were established because the Guard hadn’t been asked to assist with crowd or riot control.

Then the mission abruptly changed — and the Pentagon is now facing criticism from governors and local officials who say it moved too slowly to send National Guard troops to respond, a charge that its leaders denied Thursday.

The Capitol Police, the law enforcement force that reports to Congress and protects the House and Senate, hadn’t requested help from the Guard ahead of Wednesday’s events. But early Wednesday afternoon, its chief made an urgent plea for backup from 200 troops during a call with top Pentagon and city officials, according to officials familiar with the call.

On the call, Capitol Police Chief Steven A. Sund was asked whether he wanted help from the National Guard. “There was a pause,” one of the D.C. officials said. And Sund said yes. “Then there was another pause, and an official from the office of the secretary of the Army said that wasn’t going to be possible.”

The Army official — who was speaking on behalf of the secretary of the Army, who was de facto commanding the D.C. Guard but was not on the call — said the “optics” of soldiers inside the Capitol building was not something they wanted...

Mayor Muriel E. Bowser (D) confirmed that account in an interview with The Washington Post, saying Capitol Police “made it perfectly clear that they needed extraordinary help, including the National Guard. There was some concern from the Army of what it would look like to have armed military personnel on the grounds of the Capitol.” One concern was whether the Army had been invited by Congress.

A U.S. defense official said the Army general on the call didn’t formally deny the request but rather reinforced the negative optics of having uniformed personnel inside the Capitol, a point on which Bowser had agreed, and later checked with the chain of command. The defense official said Bowser agreed that if further support was necessary, D.C. police would provide it inside the Capitol, and the Guard would backfill D.C. police positions away from the building.

The defense official said the military wanted to be the force of last resort, and that military officials had urged Bowser to request more support from federal law enforcement but that she didn’t do so until Wednesday.

Higher-up leaders at the Pentagon then evaluated the request and activated the full D.C. Guard, in addition to later calling the governors of other states to send their Guard forces as reinforcements. The officials also lifted limits on the Guard for the new mission, arming guardsmen with riot gear, but not guns, before they headed to create a perimeter around the Capitol.

In the roughly three hours it took the Pentagon to make the shift from traffic policing to full-fledged riot response, the Capitol Police found themselves overwhelmed and rioters stormed the building, forcing lawmakers to take cover and barricade themselves in their offices. The Pentagon left it to federal law enforcement to clear the Capitol of the rioters, amid the hesitancy about sending Guard units into the building itself. By the evening, Guard units helped the Capitol Police and federal and city law enforcement reestablish a perimeter around the building.

By Thursday, National Guard forces from across the Mid-Atlantic region (incl. VA, MD, PA, NY) were moving into the Washington area.

On Thursday afternoon, 24 hours after the Capitol breach, acting defense secretary Christopher C. Miller called the violence “reprehensible and contrary to the tenets of the United States Constitution.”

“I, and the people I lead in the Department of Defense, continue to perform our duties in accordance with our oath of office, and will execute the time-honored peaceful transition of power to President-elect Biden on January 20,” he said in a statement.

Images of rioters overpowering a light law enforcement force and smashing their way into the Capitol building prompted immediate questions about how such a dramatic security breakdown could occur, especially given that rioters had openly voiced their intent to use violence on social media.

One contributing factor: As the seriousness of the threat became clear, the jumble of jurisdictions and command structures made it more difficult to respond with speed. Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy, who functions as de facto commander of the D.C. National Guard on behalf of the president, because the District is not a state, said 6,200 troops would be positioned in and around the city by the weekend, including Guard forces from Pennsylvania, New York and other nearby states.

Speaking alongside Bowser on Thursday, McCarthy said the military acted as quickly as it could once it received local authorities’ request for additional support and said officials had not been anticipating such a violent event, despite prolific calls on online platforms for violent action to overturn the Nov. 3 election.

McCarthy said officials didn’t in their “wildest imagination” envision rioters breaching Capitol grounds. City leadership had asked the Guard to carry out only a narrow mission, defense officials noted.

...The Pentagon came under severe criticism in June, after National Guard forces were on hand when unarmed protesters were forcibly cleared from an area near the White House and front-line troops were positioned outside of Washington. (military helicopters flew low over protesters, surveillance assets hovered above the city and residents were left with a sense that the District was being occupied or was under siege)

On Thursday, some local officials complained about a delay in granting their request for additional National Guard help as rioters swarmed the Capitol.

But Guard units arrived less than three hours after local authorities made the emergency request for more help, defense officials said.

The Defense Department controls the D.C. Guard because the military force answers to the president rather than the mayor. The president’s power over the D.C. Guard is delegated to the defense secretary, then the Army secretary, who makes command decisions. It is therefore up to the Pentagon leadership to call state governors if the D.C. Guard needs reinforcement.

...A U.S. defense official, who like other officials spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive deliberations, said the military always issues memos outlining the parameters of any mission. The limits added ahead of Wednesday’s events made sense, the official said, given that D.C. officials requested the deployment of only a small contingent of some 340 guardsmen, primarily to control traffic and monitor Metro stations.

“All commanders have left and right limits,” the official said. “There is no such thing as carte blanche.”

The official said that when the mission changed Wednesday afternoon, the Pentagon provided more forces than were requested, bringing in Guard units from outside states and loosening the restrictions, and moved quickly.

The scope of the initial mission request by D.C. and the unique command structure of the D.C. Guard may have made it more difficult for authorities to quickly send guardsmen to aid at the Capitol. Defense leaders defended the timing of the Guard response, citing “confusion” in scoping out a revised mission among multiple agencies and jurisdictions.

Speaking to reporters by phone Thursday, McCarthy said that after violence erupted around 2 p.m. Wednesday, he spoke with Bowser and the request was relayed for about 200 additional soldiers.

“It was at that time we were trying to get to figure out the situation up on the Capitol Hill between our two entities and phone calls from members of Congress and others,” he said.

McCarthy then briefed Miller, who authorized the deployment of all available D.C. Guard troops, some 1,100 soldiers, with the goal of getting them to the D.C. Armory within four hours.

At the same time, McCarthy said, they began trying to pull the approximately 250 Guard troops who were already deployed in D.C., return them to the Armory to don riot gear and redirect them to the Capitol. By early evening, D.C. Guard troops were in place around the Capitol, allowing police and FBI to search the building and clear it for lawmakers’ return.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) said he received a call from House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md.), who said he was in a secure location with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer.

“I was actually on the phone with Leader Hoyer, who was pleading with us to send the guard,” Hogan said. “He was yelling across the room to Schumer and they were back and forth saying we do have the authorization, and I’m saying, ‘I’m telling you we do not have the authorization.’ ”

Hogan said Maj. Gen. Timothy Gowen, the adjutant general of the Maryland National Guard, was repeatedly rebuffed by the Pentagon. “The general . . . kept running it up the flagpole, and we don’t have authorization,” he said.

Ninety minutes later, Hogan said, he received a call “out of the blue, not from the secretary of defense, not through what would be normal channels,” but from McCarthy, who asked if the Maryland guardsmen could “come as soon as possible.”

“It was like, yeah, we’re waiting, we’re ready,” said Hogan, who had already sent 200 State Police troopers at Bowser’s request.

Virginia sent in its Guard after Gov. Ralph Northam (D) received a call from Pelosi asking for help.

Clark Mercer, Northam’s chief of staff, said he received a call from his counterpart in Bowser’s office, who suggested the Defense Department wasn’t moving fast enough and asked for Virginia to send in its own state Guard.

Northam spokeswoman Alena Yarmosky said the governor called up the Guard immediately after talking with Bowser, knowing it would take some time for guardsmen to prepare. The Northam administration worked with the Defense Department only after the fact, but was able to reach the necessary agreements before guardsmen crossed state lines, she said. The governor’s office publicly announced that he had called up the Guard at 3:29 p.m.

Once the Pentagon signed off, the Guard mounted a vast response.

“Going through that mission analysis process, we were able to do an analysis and provide more than what they asked for,” the defense official said. “No one asked us to activate the entire Guard. Those are decisions we made on our own by taking a pause and conducting another analysis.”

...(DC Mayor Muriel) Bowser said it’s important to "understand why federal law enforcement response was much stronger at the protests over the summer than during the attack on Congress Wednesday."

If the District of Columbia becomes the 51st state, Bowser said D.C. would not need to make requests to the secretary of the Army for support from the National Guard. The "mayor/governor" would not be restricted in any way in how to deploy the guard and could be nimble in how to change the National Guard deployment plan, she said. If the plan limits guardsmen to a certain street, then the mayor/governor could make the determination to adjust such limitations.

If the district acquires statehood, and the office of the mayor becomes the office of a governor, Bowser said she still would not have the power to make the decision to put guardsmen on the Capitol steps or put state police on the grounds of the Capitol complex.

Bowser called on the Joint Terrorism Task Force to investigate, arrest and prosecute any individual who entered the Capitol, destroyed property or incited acts of domestic terrorism observed Wednesday.

"More immediately, we know that the current president must be held accountable for this unprecedented attack on our democracy," Bowser said, sharing screenshots of tweets by President Trump from Wednesday. "What happened yesterday is what he wanted to happen, and we must not underestimate the damage he can do to our nation and our democracy over the next two weeks."

The Pentagon said Wednesday that about 1,100 D.C. National Guard members are being mobilized to help support law enforcement as violent supporters of President Donald Trump breached the U.S. Capitol.

Pentagon spokesperson Jonathan Hoffman said Wednesday afternoon that defense leaders have been in contact with the city and congressional leadership.

A defense official said all 1,100 of the D.C. Guard were being activated and sent to the city’s armory. The Guard forces will be used at checkpoints and for other similar duties and could also help in the enforcement of the 6 p.m. curfew being implemented tonight in the city.

The officials said the D.C. request for National Guard was not rejected earlier in the day.

Instead, according to officials, the Guard members have a very specific mission that does not include putting military in a law enforcement role at the Capitol. As a result, the Guard must be used to backfill law enforcement outside the Capitol complex, freeing up more law enforcement to respond to the Capitol.

At least six Republican state legislators from across the nation participated in events surrounding the attempted insurrection at the United States Capitol on Wednesday.

News reports and social media posts showed at least one of the legislators, West Virginia Del. Derrick Evans (R), was among the violent mob that broke into the Capitol building. Evans, who was only recently sworn into office, posted a video of himself entering the building.

encouraged Trump supporters to go to the Capitol to demand that Congress block certification of the 2020 election, which Joe Biden won, including the results in Georgia.

“At 1 p.m., we will march to the Capitol building and call on Congress to stop the steal,” the robocall said. “We are hoping patriots like you will join us to continue to fight to protect the integrity of our elections.”

The call concludes, “This call is paid for and authorized by the Rule of Law Defense Fund.” (RLDF)

This is an organization of people whose oath is to their state's Constitution; they are not ignorant of the law; they are supposed to be it's primary advocates. But not this ORGANIZED right wing nest of vipers. Its a Republican machine that manufactures anti-democracy seditionists and probably traitors, and unleashes them on our democratic institutions to be the Barbarians at the Gates.

RDLF is the policy and fundraising arm of the Republican Attorneys General Association, a powerful advocacy group for GOP state attorneys general that Carr chairs. The RAGA works to coordinate conservative legal strategies at the state level, while the RLDF is charged with electing Republicans to the powerful state-level posts.

Beyond the phone calls, something beyond urging people to go to D. C., this.

The instability of her uncle right now remains the most pressing issue. “Remember: this is the man who tried to invalidate mail-in ballots in the middle of a pandemic. This is the man who forced resignations of high-level officers in the Pentagon, replacing them with sycophants. This is why, for six hours on Wednesday, the Pentagon blocked the National Guard from containing an insurrectionist mob. Our system failed miserably because this man’s been allowed to dismantle every institution this country counts on.”

And it’s not that her uncle believes he won legitimately, she argues. “He’s never had a legitimate win in his life. All that matters is getting the win, no matter if there’s an asterisk next to it.”

ABC News/Ipsos poll released on Sunday. The majority (56%) say Trump should be removed from office, while just 43% believe he should not be removed. The poll shows increasing sentiment among Americans that Trump has got to go ASAP growing since the insurrection Wednesday.

An average across polls since Wednesday (in which no pollster is counted more than once) shows that 50% of Americans want Trump to either be impeached, for the 25th Amendment to be invoked or for Trump to resign from office. The minority (43%) say that none of these should occur.

The officer initially scopes out the door, sees it's not guarded, and tries to block the way. More rioters pour up the stairs after them, and the officer seems to go with a new strategy – he shoves the first rioter, pissing him off, and then leads the whole mob the other way.

(CNN) Two US Capitol Police officers were suspended and at least 10 more are under investigation for their behavior during last week's assault on the Capitol, and federal agents will look at whether current and former law enforcement officers played a role in the riot.

One of the Capitol police officers took a selfie with someone who was part of the mob that overtook the Capitol and the other wore a "Make America Great Again" hat and started directing people around the building, according to Rep. Tim Ryan, an Ohio Democrat. He didn't disclose how many other officers were under investigation but confirmed it was between 10 and 15, and didn't say what they were being scrutinized for except that it was their behavior during the riot.

...Capitol Police acting Chief Yogananda Pittman said the department "has been actively reviewing video and other open source materials of some USCP officers and officials that appear to be in violation of Department regulations and policies. Our Office of Professional Responsibility will investigate these behaviors for disciplinary action, up to, and including, termination. Several USCP officers have already been suspended pending the outcome of their investigations."

The federal...investigation into insurrectionist ties to law enforcement is a priority because the skills that officers are trained to use during their duties could be useful to an extremist mob, authorities say. This includes clearing rooms, taking custody of people, securing areas and handling firearms.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi described Sicknick’s death as a reminder of the need to “protect our country from all threats, foreign and domestic.” President-elect Joe Biden suggested that whoever backed Trump supports “an all-out assault on our institutions of our democracy.” The day’s violence, it seems, has become an all-purpose excuse to denounce and ­silence anyone not sufficiently anti-Trump.

For patriotic Americans, the riot instigated by Trump and his craven lickspittle toadies (when is Cruz going to grow a pair and resign, anyway?) is the final straw in the long attack on our democracy. Even Republicans who went along to get along have realized that attacking our country - literally, attacking the seat of our government - is going way past too far. Given that Trump literally incited a mob to attack America, I think that patriotic Americans have now realized that you have to choose between being an American and being a Trump supporter.
So yes, anyone who is not anti-Trump at this point is going to get called out as objectively anti-American. The mob’s violent effort aimed to block Congress’ certification of Joe Biden’s election as president.

Since returning home, many have confronted harsh criticism from angry constituents or employers - often because of their own posts on social media.

At least 50 elected officials and others in public sector jobs are facing internal inquiries or investigations that, in some cases, have resulted in temporary suspensions pending investigations, based on a Reuters examination of public statements, news reports and video footage.

At least two Capitol police officers have been suspended and more than a dozen others are under investigation for alleged dereliction of duty or aiding or abetting rioters.

For some public employees caught on video or social media rioting inside the Capitol, the consequences have been swift, including arrests and job termination. Two off-duty police officers from Virginia faced criminal charges Wednesday after posting a picture of themselves on Jan. 6 in front of the Capitol’s statue of John Stark and bragging about their behavior, according to a criminal complaint filed in federal court in the District of Columbia.

Evidence Trump Campaign Behind Insurrection

. . .the National Park Service public gathering permit granted to the group lists more than half a dozen people in staff positions for the event who just weeks earlier had been paid thousands of dollars by Trump’s 2020 reelection campaign. One of those applicants is former Trump aide, Mick Mulvaney's niece, Maggie Mulvaney. She is listed as the VIP Lead on the permit that Women for America First requested for the Trump rally. She "worked as director of finance operations for the Trump campaign." Latest pay records show that she was paid as a campaign worker through at least Nov. 13.
Other staff scheduled to be “on site” during the demonstration have close ties to the White House.

Since the siege, several of them have scrambled to distance themselves from the rally.

In a statement, the president’s reelection campaign said it “did not organize, operate or finance the event.” No campaign staff members were involved in the organization or operation of the rally, according to the statement. It said that if any former employees or independent contractors for the campaign took part, “they did not do so at the direction of the Trump campaign.”

Does that sound like plausible deniability to you? How about this?

Megan Powers was listed as one of two operations managers for the Jan. 6 event, and her LinkedIn profile says she was the Trump campaign’s director of operations into January 2021.

Pretty meager distance scrambled in that statement. If "distancing" means covering up, then I'm a buyer.

. . .at least three of the Trump campaign aides named on the permit rushed to obscure their connections to the demonstration. They deactivated or locked down their social media profiles and removed tweets that referenced the rally. Two blocked a reporter who asked questions.

At least one was caught with her slip down.

Caroline Wren, a veteran GOP fundraiser, is named as a “VIP Advisor” on an attachment to the permit that Women for America First provided to the agency. Between mid-March and mid-November, Donald J. Trump for President Inc. paid Wren $20,000 a month, according to Federal Election Commission records. During the campaign, she was a national finance consultant for Trump Victory, a joint fundraising committee between the president’s reelection campaign and the Republican National Committee.

Wren retweeted messages about the event ahead of time, but a cache of her account on Google shows at least eight of those tweets disappeared. . .One of the messages Wren retweeted was from “Stop the Steal". . .

(Wren) locked her Twitter account after the AP reached out to her last Monday to ask her about her involvement in the Trump rally and the tweets she had removed. Several days later, she blocked the AP reporter.

Why do I think this is just another illegal money laundering operation to fund quasi legal and illegal activities that Trump wants to engage in? Because Women for America First is crawling with Tea Party activists, Trump campaign workers, and campaign finance staffers.

And because the IRS was involved in the scheme in a way familiar to those of us who have closely followed Trump's shady financial dealings since before he was elected. Because why would an organization first established in October 2019 suddenly decide to change its activist non-tax-exempt status to tax exempt just last year? So it could operate as a pro-Trump dark money source for questionable Trump projects using money from donors who would not be limited in their "donations" and could take advantage of its tax-exempt status themselves after doing so.

The IRS granted Women for America First tax-exempt status as a social welfare organization a year ago, with the exemption retroactive to February 2019. The AP requested that the group provide any tax records it may have filed since then, but received no response.

Remember that in Feb. 2019, El Paso sued Trump for the half-million dollars he'd stiffed the city and just two months before he had been forced to pay $2M for the money he'd illegally siphoned from the Trump Charities.

What better way to come up with the dough than to create a second "charitable" money laundering arrangement just like the one he had the first time? Zebra. Unchanged stripes. Besides, left-over change could be used for "unforeseen expenses" between then and his assured reelection. Can't indict a sitting president, you know.

Turns out, financing an incitement rally to wind up his civilian army of insurgents was just such an "unforeseen expense." No doubt, Wren's solicitation phone calls hinted at what donors sought after funds were really going for in a hush-hush euphemistic way. No doubt the money poured in, like it poured in from grassroots small donors to the "Stop the Steal" PAC, the so-called "Election Defense Fund.” Of course, we now know all donations under $8000 didn't go where the donors might have been led to believe they were going. Instead, according to the RNC, such donations went straight into Trump's pocket.

I'm convinced that, like the zebra, the leopard is still covered in the same old, same old spots with his Mall Rant and Rally laundering scheme. And that proves that Trump is a traitor who bought and paid for a war on one of the other branches of our Federal government -- the one that, once it certifies the ECVs, puts the nails in his months-long attempt to Actually Steal the Election.

So far, however, he and other leaders say they have seen no evidence of any threats, and officials said the vetting hadn’t flagged any issues that they were aware of.

“We’re continually going through the process, and taking second, third looks at every one of the individuals assigned to this operation,” McCarthy said in an interview after he and other military leaders went through an exhaustive, three-hour security drill in preparation for Wednesday’s inauguration. He said Guard members are also getting training on how to identify potential insider threats.

About 25,000 members of the National Guard are streaming into Washington from across the country — at least two and a half times the number for previous inaugurals. And while the military routinely reviews service members for extremist connections, the FBI screening is in addition to any previous monitoring.

From the affidavit against her: Riley Williams’ former romantic partner called the FBI several times in the days following the riots to report that they had seen her in videos inside the Capitol, but friends of Williams had shown the tipster a video of Williams taking a laptop...

... computer or hard drive from Speaker Pelosi’s office. The witness told the FBI that “WILLIAMS intended to send the computer device to a friend in Russia, who then planned to sell the device to SVR, Russia’s foreign intelligence service...”

“... but that the transfer of the computer device to Russia fell through for unknown reasons and Williams still has the computer device or destroyed it. “This matter remains under investigation.”

Williams has appeared to have fled, she packed a bag & did not tell her mother where she was going but said she would be gone for a couple of weeks. She has changed her telephone number & deleted what are believed to have been her social media accounts on Facebook, Instagram...

Her mother told law enforcement that her daughter had taken a sudden interest in President Trump’s politics and “far right message boards.”...

... Her father said he drove to D.C. with Williams for the protests but that they did not stay together during the day....

...On January 11th Williams’ mother filed a suspicious persons report against the witness that provided the info about the laptop to the FBI.”
