There might be a small amount of space yet available for more books in the new house; but not a lot more. I still have two sizable bookshelves and two smaller ones to sort; not to mention the history collection atop the living room mantel and various small piles. Oh, and a short wall of books in the garage upper floor.

So the sort continues!

I have two copies of Black Beauty on my children’s classics shelves. I read it once as a child and won’t read it again, but I’ll keep a copy for the grands. Contrarily, I’m discarding the larger volume with the nicer pictorial cover. The illustrator is Florence White Williams and the text on each page is surrounded by repeated sketches. I like the illustrations by Wesley Dennis much more; and the text size is the same in the smaller, plainer book.

Needed to add that for my Memories collection. I got it for Christmas in the mid 60s. Probably 1967, but could have been 1966.

I just went and looked at what I should borrow from you. Nothing new for memories, but my eyes have turned green that you have a few Gene Stratton-Porters I don't. (Freckles has been high on my list of favouites since 1964.)

My eye was also caught by I Contain Multitudes and my library even has it. In English. Someone has it, but I have entered a hold. BTW, there is a hilarious review from August.

And I havent read most of those Stratton-Porters yet.

Okay, I probably don’t need a bible concordance, but I certainly don’t need two. Not enough knowledge to discern whether Strong or Young is superior, but Strong is a nicer binding, so goodbye Young.

Fond memories using it teaching Sunday School, fifth grade. The boys especially enjoyed dipping in to discover clues in our lessons.

Will I ever dip into William Barclay again? I have all the gospels, Acts and Corinthians. Setting them aside for a while. I learned so much from these 25 years ago.

Deascessioning two of the three titles concerning history of poor law in the US. In addition to Blaming the Victim as above, adding The Altruistic Imagination to the pile. Keeping From Poor Law to Welfare State.

The last shelf will be difficult. It focuses on women’s history perspectives.

The Root of Evil - Dixon sounds like an anti-capitalist, but he expresses it with some very strange notions. He compares the poor white people in the city to the southern black slaves, saying that at least the slaves had their physical needs met. The one old fashioned businessman he features is a caring paragon of benefaction threatened by the evil corporation. I could spend time with the paragon if not for the moralizing of the author.

That’s exactly what I plan to do in my bathroom for towels and TP. It’s an incredibly small room.

But yes, I had planned to span an entire wall in the 2nd bedroom/library. I’ve done that before at the old house. Was stymied because I couldn’t match the brackets I already had and moved on to other projects. That will help. But I still have three bookcases full in the house to sort. Those books in the garage are forgotten treasures.

Make that four cases. But those go to daughter’s house when she’s ready for them. Let’s not even mention the triple stack in the middle of the old living room that I just vacuumed around.

I’ve got one of those closets too, out in the hall. It’s a treasure that I’ve never had before. I arranged it nicely and took a picture and sent it to daughters.
But I also have a bonus linen closet that is HUGE, at the bottom end of the attic stairs corridor. I love it! I buy more blankets, quilts and linens than I actually need. (second hand)

But a lot of the blankets do get put to use when I have a houseful. Teens sleeping out on the trampoline appreciate blankets.

I love Michael Hague’s illustrations in some books. But I finally admit that doesn’t stretch to
The Velveteen Rabbit.

I remember one hot summer when I was alone, and finally set the hammock up in the basement. I needed blankets under me to warm up.

Colonial Craftsmen and the Beginnings of American Industry - published in 1965, this was an award winning book. And it still contains lots of valuable information. It’s just that I no longer need to own it.

Taking a hard look at the set of Time-Life World War II that I saved when the local library discarded it.
Today, I can say goodbye to Russia Besieged. I know it’s a book about war, but it is too full of death and horribleness.

Sorry for seeming to ignore your responses. I drove six boxes to my favorite local library near where I used to work. Their collection is not significant (though I did borrow The Library of the Unwritten). But they have staff that are always enthusiastic and welcoming.

It is now too sizzling outside to consider any activity, even another trip out to the garage.

I’ve got the full set of the Time-Life This Fabulous Century, which documents social history from 1870 to 1970.
The first volume sums up the end of the 19th century in one book, and each of the rest cover a decade. I’m going to be bold and break up the set. I don’t have room for them, but I do love the pictorial records of some of the decades more than others.
I can discard two at this moment -

The Fabulous Century 1920 - 1930 - the primary thing I’ll miss is a double fold-out showing the Miss America contestants of 1924. It’s the bathing suit competition. So so different from what I recall of this kind of show.
This Fabulous Century 1950 - 1960 - not a gracious decade. And I’m too young to feel nostalgia for it. Of the dozen sit-coms it shows, I remember only two - The Honeymooners and Make Room for Daddy.

Lincoln: a photobiography, easily discarded because I also own Lincoln a picture story of his life; which expands to Civil War material as well.

As well, disposing The Power to Heal and keeping Medicine’s Great Journey.

I always have a small Goodwill bag going at the side door. Toys, glass containers, an occasional piece of clothing all get handed off at the donate door.
That crap dollhouse was left down at my curb and someone scooped it up. It’s been replaced with a much nicer, bigger dollhouse from the cabin.

I’m in process building a better cabinet for the Little Free Library; and it will hold all of the books stacked on the guest bedroom floor.

I again checked with my neighbor, and she again assured me they will take the hot tub. I think I will unplug it and drain it.

Treme season 1, about post-Katrina New Orleans. I thought it would feature great neighbors and possibly great music. But the graphic pornography spoiled it for me. I kept thinking I could skim that crap; but I don’t even want to try.

Okay, just one shelf of books left in the garage. None in attic, basement and bathroom. None in the front bedroom and craft room. The upstairs hall still has one long case that are promised to Rose. But she is moving household now herself.
Two small-ish cases in the front hall, that I’ve mostly sorted. One large case in my bedroom. Nothing significant in the dining room.
The living room has no bookcases, but this is where I’m doing the sorting. So there are piles everywhere; most I’d like to keep, but have no shelf space for.
I took apart a large ikea cabinet and will reassemble it for the basement. Until I fix the moisture problem there though, no books in the basement.
Oh, and there is a collection of fascinating history books at the very top of the overmantel.

There was a stack of dollhouse/miniature books in my craft room, and I brought them along, since my interest is reawakened. I just bought The Big Book of a Miniature House, which is visually exciting. So I am able to discard two of the old books:

As I thought, there were a few duplicates in that pile of picture books from the garage. I hardly ever buy new, so it just indicates I repeatedly picked up favorites.
These will be offered to my girls.

Shifting books around on the living room shelves, trying to fit more books from WV, I found a cookbook.

The Fruits of the Earth
Huh! Why is this not in the kitchen? Rummage, rummage. Hmm. None of these recipes seem attractive to me. Oh! I bought the book for the botanical paintings, by Graham Rust. Two dozen nice-sized color plates, suitable for framing and hanging.
So I disassembled the book to free the plates. It’s an exceptionally well built book, both sewn and glued. That actually made the disassembly easier and safer for the plates.

My favorite is the pumpkin.

I can’t decide about the 1909 publication by the National Geographic Society, Scenes From Every Land. There are lots of no longer interesting photo plates; but interspersed with enough that are still fascinating.

And a college yearbook from a WV college I’ve only ever visited once - Kanawhachen ‘78 - my husband and a friend attended, but not that late in the 70s. I think it came home with another that was done with much more panache and wit. This one only recalls how we dressed and wore our hair. The young women often in trousers and folk blouses; but when in dresses, they are again at knee length.

I’m in the emptying house in WV; but it is not as vacant as it needs to be. My bedroom still has one large case; which I’ve started tackling. The front hall still has two small cases. The living room has piles everywhere. I need to get ruthless. I want to make another library run, but I only have two boxes loaded.
It has turned cold and wet; perfect weather for this task.

Not sure where this small stack came from. It just appeared on the living room chair. One is a diary journal kept by my mother in 1949. My sister says she lent it to me last year. So it’s not really mine and will go back to Pittsburgh.
The other two books are not familiar either. One is a 2014 book on soils, which I will read. The other is an easy cast-off:
A 1964 title, The Enjoyment of Chemistry, which is just too outdated and basic.

Ah, forgot to list Private - Keep Out! which was promised as a comedy, but which failed in my opinion.
