I read this book in 1975 or 76. I cannot remember the title or the author except that I remember it saying it had previously been titled, "The Last Kiss" or " The Final Kiss". I believe the author was male. Not sure why I think that but I do. The story begins with a group of American Indians who are out hunting and kidnap a white settler. The leader of the group does not allow anyone to molest her and he does not initially either. She is treated poorly by the other Indian women and is forced to learn to speak the language or she won't be given food. She is given her own tent which she shares with the Indian. Eventually, after a war of wills, she enters into a sexual relationship with the Indian and she believes that he is going to marry her. She is angered when he married a young Indian woman who he has been promised to but he doesn't spend the night with his new wife and he feels that this should please the girl. It doesn't. I believe they do marry. I know that the tribe moves and they stay behind for some reason, which I can't remember. I cannot remember if they have a child or not. As time goes by she becomes more angry with him and keeps asking him to return her to her family. He eventually decides to do so and sends her with a group of other Indian males. He does not accompany her but becomes convinced that he has made a mistake and sets out to follow them and bring her back. A duo of white trappers are hunting and come across a lone Indian during the night. They shoot him, "right between the eyes". As the woman gets close to her home she changes her mind and asks the men to return her to her Indian husband. They agree to do so and the story ends there. I don't remember any names of the characters but that is the plot that I remember. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated. I read it in paperback form.
