Book reviews, how to add personal reviews

I wanted to add a short review on a book that I read (partially) but one that is not in my library, and not one I would particularly like to add. There were some 60 reviews already, and I could not find a place to add a new one. So I'd like to ask whether I have to include the book in my library in order to review it, or whether I ran into a preset limit on the number of reviews.

You will have to add it to your library -- reviews are tied to member's copies of the book so the only way to add a review is to have the book in your library (and keep it there - deleting it will delete the review).

You can add it into a special collection and remove the collection from considerations for recommendations if you prefer though.

You have to add a book to be able to rate, review etc, but for those you don't own there's already one of the default collections 'read but unowned' and you can create others if needed and adjust its settings under collection manager

>1 Diderot68: I have a special collection called "Officially Unfinished". I would recommend it for books you can't get through. In my case, it helps me remember that I read but didn't like it, preventing me from reading it again because I don't remember.

Thanks, all, very good suggestions. I particularly like the idea of a list of books I didn't finish and don't want to start again by mistake. Except that in my case there aren't really that many books in that category. Usually if it's a book I didn't finish, I would have rationalized that I will finish it some day if I can just find a good reason to pick it up again.

>5 Diderot68: I also have a collection called "On Hiatus" which consists of books I think I will go back and finish some day. There probably isn't much likelihood, but it gives one hope.

I just put those in my "To Read" collection, with a comment about how much I read before. 2020 has actually been a big year for me going back and finishing previously abandoned books, most notably Against the Day.

If we'd all make such lists, I'm sure Pynchon would feature often.

Agreed! I have been afraid to start one of his books for years! Literally my entire life

>9 krazy4katz: Gravity's Rainbow has been on the same spot on my to read shelf ever since I moved in. I did get about halfway before moving here, a decade ago, but I refuse to take it out of the "to read" until I actually get around to it.
