As I said in the group description: "This is a group to replace the old group "History" (or "History Fans", we're debating which one it was) which apparently got deleted. This group will discuss all sorts of history without being specific as to location, time frame or other aspects. It just has to be non-fiction history. All are welcome."
Sadly we apparently lost a lot of history ;) when the old group got deleted, but we can start it up again. I (or someone else) will posted a monthly "Current Reading" thread and anyone can of course post whatever they think will be of interest to the group.

Groups don't get deleted. There's 77 groups that have been marked dormant. (Not sure about if Tim proceeded with the archive plan or not.) Which history group do you seek?
This one perhaps?

Well, our old group might not have been deleted, but it isn't on our talk lists or lists of groups. It wasn't dormant, we've been on it pretty regularly, several times a month at least. And I believe the group name was "History"; funny how you forget things, I've posted a zillion times on it over the years but can't quite swear that the name was just "History". Maybe the name got overwritten because it was called just "History" and that caused it to be combined into another group? Anyway, two of us have already noticed it being gone and so we're now on the new group "General History". Long live the GH'ers!

Was it possible World History? http://www.librarything.com/groups/worldhistory
The groups of which you are a member are on your profile; you can always look there. You have several history groups, but none titled simply "History". Perhaps you are misremembering the name?

jztemple is correct. The group was named “History” (I swear to it).
Edited to Add:
I may have sworn too soon. The group name possibly was “History Fans.” Either way, it’s missing.

>4 lilithcat: As I said, we've been posting in it regularly, as in within the past week or so, World History hasn't been posted to since 2018. As dypaloh notes, neither "History" nor "History Fans" show up as a group.

Who was the admin of the missing group? I think it's possible for a group's admin to just delete the whole thing. Wasn't there a religion group some years back that was deleted by its admin to the chagrin of many who had posted on it?
8jztemple
>7 Crypto-Willobie: I have no idea who was admin, since I joined an already formed group. I didn't even know it had an admin, since no one ever did any admin type actions.

No one ever spoke up for the group...so who knows?
This is out there but maybe the creator has passed on and their survivors are cleaning up after them.

Yes, it's possible for the admin of a group to delete it. I checked.
Kick out an abusive troll, now that would be unacceptable here, but destroying years of conversation with the click of a button, apparently Tim sees no potential downside there.

Incidentally, you may be able to retrieve some information about the old group via Google Cache and the Wayback Machine.

>11 lorax: I keep my own file of what I've read, so I don't need archived posts. Others might find those resources useful however so that's good info, thanks for posting it.

I found URLs in my notes for a few of the deleted History threads I'd posted to, and checked them in WayBack Machine and Google Cache. No success, unfortunately, but it was a small sample--maybe others will have success. I'll miss being able to easily revisit some of the other members' comments.

The group was definitely called History Fans. Its homepage was last archived by the Wayback Machine in Feb 2020, but unfortunately the contents of the individual topics/threads were not archived. Attempting to visit one of the topics as a direct link (without the archive.org prefixing) confirms that the group was deleted.

Back in 2009, Tim decided that groups with 50+ members shouldn't be deletable, but maybe he never got around to programming that in as an automatically-enforced rule? https://www.librarything.com/topic/61680#1195090
'History Fans' had 717 members back in February.
Sounds like he should be able to restore/undelete that previous group and transfer ownership of it to a new administrator.

I suppose one could contact asukamaxwell, the creator, and ask why the group was deleted. S/he's still active, adding books and posting in other groups.

>16 lilithcat: I posted a comment to asukamaxwell a couple of days ago but didn't hear anything back.

Since I'm an optimist I've decided to start a new group with our old group name, History Fans. General History as a group name just isn't that inviting. So hopefully everyone who has posted in the General History group will join the new History Fans group and I'll delete the General History group when that happens. So please post over on the History Fans topic "History Fans returns from the dead, err, deleted! Or at least a new group with an old name" to say that you've joined. Thanks!

>18 jztemple: I had been optimistic that Tim would do what he'd promised in that 2009 thread, but it's starting to look like that was too optimistic. ;)
