I am adding a copy of Kr. Kongstad, "Statistisk Skildring af Lægdsgaarden i Ølseby-Magle. Af en ung Geograph." (1911).
The transcript on Wikipedia gives "Ølseby-Magle", just like on my title-page, while the copy on Europeana, contributed by the Röhsska Museum in Gothenburg, Sweden, gives "Ölseby-Magle".
School-boy question, perhaps, but what gives? Is ö the Swedish equivalent of Danish ø, or has ø been done away with in some Danish spelling reform since 1911?
I'm more familiar with Welsh, which lengthens vowels (I'm guessing that's what ø and ö are doing) by using what the French call an accent circumflex and we call a to bach ('little roof'). But we only use the accent if there is a word with each pronunciation, so a need to differentiate between them, like tan ('under') and tân ('fire'), or ffon ('stick') and ffôn ('phone').
