Four Gospels of The Lord Jesus Christ According To The Authorized Version Of King James I With Decorations by Eric Gill Printed And Published At The Golden Cockerel Press MCMXXXI. Limited edition 2007

This book is a facsimile of the 1931 Golden Cockerel Press edition of the first four books of the New Testament that was decorated by Eric Gill.

The 256 page facsimile volume is bound in sensuous full black Nigerian goatskin by G. Lachenmaier with gilt decorations on cover and spine. The Fabriano Tiziano endleaves are mid-grey. All page edges gilt and there is a black satin ribbon marker.

There is a 27 page companion volume of essays by John Dreyfus on the Golden Cockerel Press and its type styles, and Robert Gibbings (former proprietor of the Golden Cockerel Press) with personal reminiscences about the Eric Gill. It is quarter bound in black buckram with grey paper sides and a cover title label.

The black cloth solander box has gilt titling on the spine, and is 36.5x26.2x7.5cm.

The limitation was very high at 2750 copies, and the original list price in the UK was £295.

Somewhat ironic that these gospels should have been decorated by Gill.

Lol.
Disclaimer: I am an atheist. But by definition there's nothing ironic about a sinful Catholic making art and being sinful. That's the whole theology, that men are naturally sinful. Many sinful (redundant) Catholics have been great artists. There's definitely nothing ironic about a sinful person illustrating the Bible which says all men are sinful and by the way contains several depictions of incest, one of which (at least) occurs without comment and results in zero consequences for anybody.

If you want to know how significant that lack of consequences is read the passage where Elisha calls on bears to maul some children just for making fun of him.

>1 wcarter: Does the FS 2018 Fine Edition use the same text block?

I do not own the fine edition, so cannot comment for sure, but I suspect it is the same text, possibly printed on inferior paper.
Another devotee may have more information.

>1 wcarter: You laid out the presentation of this book so beautifully on this thread that I couldn't resist and had to bid (and won) this item a few minutes ago on eBay :-)

I've little interest in religious stuff, but I hope one day to own Gill's rendition of The Canterbury Tales from GCP. I believe Folio Society made a similar facsimile of that, although it's the Golden Cockerel original that I'm after. I just have to figure out how to sneak it into the house without anyone noticing...

Gill's work is amazing, no doubt about his ability.

Also, >2 Ipcress_File: we've had this debate a long time ago, about distinguishing the art from the artist, which you will find on this group's discussion boards.

Suffice to say, all men are sinful, and there's nothing ironic about Gill using his God-given talent to make it what it is.

This is a truly amazing work and if we are being honest, the only surprise would have been from his contemporaries, who might have raised an eyebrow that he would illustrate a Bible that was not in the Vulgate or Douay Rheims translation.

Hello, should I buy the LE or is the fine version of 2018 good enough? The price difference is 5 times and my budget is very low. Taxes and customs fees make the LE cost even mooore.

>10 Lukas1990:
The LE is certainly nicer, probably twice as good as the SE, but not five times better.
Same as cars. A Mercedes is probably twice as good as a Toyota, but five times the price.

I plan to pick up the SE version of this one to add with my recent acquisition of The Book Club of California's 1990 edition of a Typographical Masterpiece, which describes Gill's collaboration with Gibbings to produce the Golden Cockerel edition. Should be a nice pairing to read (and on my shelf).

*Edited to reference SE edition

The LE uses much nicer paper than the SE.

Won this book on an Ebay auction. My first FS LE. Very excited! While I wait for the book to arrive I will have to make some space on my shelves.
