What 1001 books are you reading in these waning days of winter/summer?

I've been reading a lot of non-list books this summer. I need to remember to pick Three Lives back up and I will also read One, No One and One Hundred Thousand.

I finished Castle Richmond by Anthony Trollope. I'm a huge Trollope fan and I'm not sure why this one of his 40-some novels is on the list. It might be my least favorite so far.

This month I'm planning to read Passing with the group read. I loved Nella Larsen's other list book, Quicksand, so I'm looking forward to this.

I'm three months in to reading David Copperfield, distracted by a whole bunch of other off-list books, and my need to experience the book for as long as I can. It's the greatest book ever written, and I never want it to end.

Attempted to read Fantomas, but 50 pages in I had to quit. It's a DNF for me.

Starting Democracy now and have Bel-Ami and The Art of Fielding waiting in the wings.

I've started The Book of Disquiet and early on there is this bit: "And because this book is absurd, I love it;..."

Hopefully I, too, will continue to enjoy it.

I just finished the excellent Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. I am reading Lord Jim by installments and I have The Once and Future King ready to start shortly.

I'm reading Love Medicine, a recent group read that I didn't manage to join. Like the rest of you, I am 100% confused by the characters and their relationships. I printed out a family tree and it's not enough!

A copy of Return of the Soldier arrived in the mail yesterday so I started it right away. Since it is so short I imagine I will finish it today. Wonderful writing.

>9 annamorphic: Glad it wasn't just me! I found those family relationships with all the different generations from story to story really confusing!

I’m reading Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day. In September I’ll read The Magic Mountain as a group read in the category challenge. I’ll post the link when it’s up if anyone wants to join in.

I've finally read another 1001 book, having finished Lord of the Flies. It's quite dark and not a bedtime book. I finished it in the morning...
How does anyone think it would change had the group been of mixed gender?

Just finished The Return of the Soldier which was recommended by puckers for the August Reading Challenge and I loved it. Every word seems exquisite; I read Rebecca West's Harriet Hume a few years ago and didn't like it nearly as much.

>13 Helenliz: I am looking forward to reading this book again as I have not read it since high school. I remember it having quite an impact then. Hmmm, mixed gender is an interesting thought!

>14 gypsysmom: I had a different book for the August challenge but as there have been such good things said about The Return of the Soldier and I have it on my shelf, I think I will pick up this book next.

I have finally taken my copy of The Return of the Soldier down from my shelf after puckers and gypsymom both recommended it for the August Group Challenge. I am halfway through - why have I not read this before?!
