Having just read an enthusiastic article by Margaret Drabble in the latest edition of Slightly Foxed about the original unabridged version of this work I checked out my own copy, long unread. It is one of the many abridged versions, in this case published by Ward Lock long before ISBNs: the abridger is not credited.
I wonder if there is anyone out there who knows the book and maybe even feels as positive about it as Drabble who would like to try to tidy up the editions on LT? The original and the abridgments are clearly as different as chalk and cheese. I have no idea as to how the abridged versions differ from each other. Some work has been done - there are a lot of separated Puffin editions for instance - but there is much more to do.
This is not a task for me! I am toying with the idea of getting the original and that would be more than enough exposure.
