Holiday teachings

Do you teach about any of the various holidays? For instance, do you use St. Patrick's Day to study the history of Ireland, or the early church, or Paganism?

I've certainly thought about it but haven't gotten very far in implementation. It's hard not to get tied into the "scheduled" stuff and think there's no time for branching out. This is an area I'd really like to improve in. I'd also be fun to do as a group - each person taking an area they have interest in and reporting back to the group.

Yes, I've found groups to be great for that. They motivate you to do something you wouldn't take the time to do on your own. Problem is, if you have a great dynamic group, you can get burned out. :)

Not a problem for me currently since I don't know any other English speaking families in about 100 miles! Maybe someday... Meanwhile I'm hardly celebrating Easter this year due to moving house, normally I try to at least do that up big.
What would be the next holiday? Memorial Day? My 9yr boy could certainly get into some study related to that, I'll have to keep it in mind.

There's April Fool's Day. :) A study of calendars and how they work and who decided what about them, or a study from Proverbs? Memorial Day is a great one to prepare for as well. I love thinking up themed studies, I suppose that's just the way my brain works. I tend to rebel against a rigid schedule.

And my son and I love those nice schedules and things to check off, but we are trying to loosen up! We are pretty much done with our school year so we are feeling a little more free, we'll work on the April Fool's Day thing!
