Exorcists and Exorcism - Books/Films

There is a whole convoluted path that led me to this topic, so I will likely take my time to retrace it, unraveling the ball of twine as I go, so as to not lose my place again. Suffice it to say that a book was recommended, but I bided my time until now. A few posts exist in other threads, which I will have to seek out in order to cross reference myself, but all in due time.

Matt Baglio's The Rite: The Making of a Modern Exorcist

Having not yet seen the film The Rite (2011) did not diminish the impact of the book. It's written as a biography by a journalist about primarily Father Gary Thomas. They were enrolled in the same Vatican course in Rome, so the relationship and topic evolved naturally, but not indelicately. I've seen clips featuring Anthony Hopkins as the priest providing the apprenticeship, and the young Irish actor they chose to depict Father Gary at the time. Avoiding spoilers will be tough, but que sera.

Father Gary Thomas was born in California, got a part time job at a funeral home in highschool, began a business after university, all the while discerning his vocation to the priesthood. His ordination was fulfilled and he worked as a parish priest for 20yrs before ever travelling to Rome for a sabbatical year after 12-15 yrs at St. Nicholas RC Church. Point being, he was already in his 40s, apprenticing with Father Carmine, who was exactly the same age. The film flipped it for their own purposes, but Father Gary was a consultant during the film, as was the author.

Newest book out;
by The Reverend Father Vincent P. Lampert (official exorcist for an Indiana parish) called 'The Battle Against Satan and His Demons' published SEP2020. His focus is not so much on the distractive nature of the devil, and the theatrics, but on the infinite power of Christ to heal those sincerely wanting to be freed from the chaos and destruction in their lives. One can never be forced into exorcism, it must be an act of the will to want it. That's why demons manifest at this point, and are so unhappy, since they do not want to be released from their host, as any parasite would not, nor do they want the affliction of the person to be all for not. Demons hate mankind, they especially hate the Blessed Virgin Mary, since she is the most perfect creation of God. Mankind was raised above the angelic when Christ was incarnated in Mary's womb by the Holy Spirit. Demons will do anything to deceive/distract/discourage/disgrace (humiliate) anyone, which is why they despise Roman Catholic exorcists, since they have been granted the power to remove them, through the sacred rites and prayers of the Church, leading back to Saint Peter, the first pope. Only bishops can assign priests as exorcists, but all bishops, by their title, are exorcists. Many are undeserving, since they don't take the devil seriously, but they still hold the office and authority necessary to give the priest his official ministry. This book by Father Lampert makes it clear, that the power lies not with the devil but with Jesus Christ. And when Mary shows up, it's over.

7 Types or Levels of Spiritual Warfare:
(not necessarily progressive)

Possession - partial or full
(physical torment, trance manipulation to take over, sometimes periods of absence between sessions)

Obsession (attacked from the inside)

Oppression - direct or indirect (attacked from the outside, ie. curse)

Subjugation (intentional pact)

Infestation (spacial, objects, etc. since they're territorial creatures)

Temptation (manipulation of the imagination, memory, senses, etc. and can even use good things against good people to inflict suffering, very subtle, very gradual)

Vexation or Dolors/Dolours (purification of a saint, through physical or mental means, either requested or allowed as an intensification of sanctity)

* the discernment process determines whether a simple blessing is needed, or a minor exorcism with deprecatory prayers (indirect), or a major exorcism with the Latin Ritual updated from 1614 in 1998 which includes both deprecatory and imprecatory (direct command) prayers
* these options do not become part of the plan until physical/mental illness are eliminated by specialists, unless something manifests immediately in the presence of the priest
* prayers of deliverance are not considered to be as effective as the solemn Rite
* estimates of 500,000 cases vetted in 2004-2005 for the diocese of Rome, which includes the Vatican
* Father Ripperger estimates his own ministry saw 600-800/yr with fewer than 10 actual possession cases, whereas Father Gary Thomas has seen hundreds of cases but only 12 victims were liberated from concrete manifestations over the past 15yrs
* Canada has several, all anonymous; 2 in Toronto, 1 each in Ottawa, Montreal, Calgary but Vancouver and Edmonton have on-call priests if required

Alphonsus Rodriguez (1532/3-1617) Spain
Brother André Bessette (1845-1937) Montreal, Quebec, Canada
etc.

Michael the Archangel is the one invoked to protect the universal Church, and the prayer to him written by Pope Leo xiii in 1884 is a Partial Indulgence for the Faithful. He cast into hell, satan and all the evil spirits (approximately one third) who defied God the Father through their own free will, which was permanent and irrevocable. Angels are not saints. Saints are human creatures who've died after their birth and life. Angels were never humans, nor are they ghosts.

Michael, Gabriel, Raphael are all Archangels. Michael does battle, Gabriel does communication (the Annunciation), Raphael does healing and music, etc. (per the book of Tobit, one of the 7 books removed from the protestant bibles by Luther/Calvin, etc.)

Tobit 5 describes the Archangel Raphael appearing in human disguise in order to accompany (light/guard/rule/guide) Tobias, defeat a demon torturing a young woman's betrothed (repeated persecution), as well as bring healing to Tobit, the blind father, which rewards his faithfulness and obedience to God by burying the dead (as a Jewish man, a minority, in dangerous circumstances).

Experience or Observations

* the critical difference between preternatural and supernatural, and that these terms are rarely used properly
* what amps up the film The Rite to be scarier than The Exorcist is the element of Truth portrayed during the actual exorcism scenes
* a demon rarely manifests since it prefers to stay hidden, so only 5-10% of the cases, if that, are discerned to be actual possession
* the guarantee to uncover its presence is for the victim exercising his/her free will wanting to be freed or healed
* Catholics can often break the situation themselves, by daily prayer, weekly Eucharist, monthly confession but if they are kept away from receiving these graces and blessings then the priest steps in for as long as it takes
* obstacles often interfere with this free will conversion or reversion, since the evil spirits live like parasites on our senses and do not want to give that up
* angels, good or bad, acquire information solely through intellect, whereas human beings acquire knowledge through both the brain and the body, the intellect and the senses
* one genuine Confession is sometimes enough to shatter the hold, since it's a Sacrament which is more powerful than any sacramental, and the Rite of Exorcism is considered a sacramental

Caveats

* I am no scholar, with no university degree, so don't come at me with claws bared and gnashing of teeth, because I will not engage in debate or 'carousel' quarrels
* I have only one lens, from inside my many decades of Roman Catholic Faith, so if I inadvertently cause offence, forgive me right out of the gate
* when I say 'bless your heart' it's because that's precisely what my mother taught me to say, when etiquette rules over ignorance or aggression
* if threatened or bullied, I will simply pick up my Holy Rosary and pray for you to find the information you need, not want
* there is a lot of doctrine and dogmatic teaching and the deposit of Faith tradition with historical references to things that I have never heard of, but a lot I grew up knowing without understanding, so this has been as eye opening for me as much as for anyone else
* I was reminded recently that anti-Catholicism is supposedly the last acceptable form of prejudice, so pardon my hackles if they're up and glowing like a red hot fireplace poker.

Quotes from the book:

Pg.4
A tear from Mary is all it took.

Pg.4
The woman thrashed and screamed. "No!" the demon barked. "I'm not going to say it! I must not say it, I can't; it is against everything."
The exorcist could feel that the demon was weakening. He asked everyone in the room to kneel. "Eternal Father, You are my Creator and I adore You," he intoned...
The woman, sensing the torment of the demon, saw all the saints in the room respond as well.
"No, no, even those other ones kneeled down -- the white one, the black one, and the little white one," the demon said. Then the exorcist noticed that the demon's voice changed slightly to a tone of forced reverence when he added, "Her, her (Mary) -- she kneeled down as well."
..."Through Him, with Him, in Him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honour is Yours, Almighty Father, forever and ever. "
Refers to;
Pope Saint John Paul ii = the white one re: robes
Saint Gemma Galgani = the black one in her woolen coat/habit
Saint (Mother) Teresa of Calcutta = little white one, in her white/blue sari, all descriptions per pages 2+3.

Pg.40
The word devil comes from the Greek diabolos, which means "adversary, slanderer, opposer." When the Hebrew Bible was translated in 200 BCE into Greek (known as the Septuagint version), the Greeks commonly used this word in place of the Hebrew word satan, which meant "accuser."

Pg.59
Demonic possession in and of itself is not evil; it is not considered a sin.
Demonic possession is not contagious.
Generally speaking, say exorcists, one has to either open the door to the devil, or be a victim of one who has opened the door.

Pg.92
He wasn't sure how long it would take him to get out to the Basilica di San Lorenzo Fuori le Mura (St. Lawrence outside the walls) but he'd given himself 45 minutes just to be on the safe side.
The Basilica of San Lorenzo has a long association with death. Built on the site of Christian catacombs from the third century and adjacent to the sprawling citylike Verano Cemetery, the Basilica houses the bones of 3 saints; Saint Lawrence, Saint Stephen, Saint Justin ... as well as those of Pope Pius ix.

Apostolic Authority of the Roman Catholic Church

Highly appropriate that today is June 29th, the Solemn Feastday for two martyrs, Peter and Paul. Saint Peter and Saint Paul, pray for us! I consecrate this thread and all content to your safe keeping. May the Holy Name of Jesus Christ protect all input and output for the spiritual safety of all. Amen.

It's important to avoid harmful curiosity or fascination with the demonic, the occult, curses, satanism, witchcraft/wicca, new age, etc. My purpose here is to stick with topics covered in Matt Baglio's book. Much of it is written for the protection of the Faithful and their families, to safeguard them against unnecessary attack, but also as a teaching aid to recognize potential symptoms when something goes horribly wrong. Arming oneself against demons is simply a responsible preventative measure for any Christian based on historical practices, doctrine, dogma, utilizing ritual and tradition. It's much easier to stay off the radar than to become one of the victims. That being said, Catholics don't fear the evil one, they despise and pity him/it. The Fear of God is a gift of the Holy Spirit and represents Awe. The demons and their leader have already been defeated by the Crucifixion, when God the Son, Jesus Christ defeated death by dying. The Resurrection and Ascension were for the glory of God the Father. This is why demons hate mankind with perpetual vengeance. Their lies can never be trusted, except when commanded to speak the absolute Truth which causes them pain, but they are bound by God's ordered law. That authority is what each exorcist walks in the room with, and each fallen angel knows it. They take a brutal beating everytime, which wears them down. That's why they all prefer to hide.

Catechism cites this, as does all Vatican instruction concerning the various publications of The Ritual (1614, 1952, 1998, etc.). Once, it had to be done in either Latin or Italian, but now other languages have been approved, like French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, etc. But the English version requested by the USCCB may still be awaiting Vatican acceptance of the translation.

The solemn or formal or major exorcism must only be conducted by a priest who has been appointed by the Bishop of his diocese to do so. The Apostolic Authority of each Bishop, from the long line all the way back to Saint Peter, who was appointed by Christ Himself, is what gives order to the process, by which the fallen angels are bound. A minor exorcism can be done by any ordained RC priest. Parents have authority over themselves, their children, their homes, through the Sacrament of Baptism.

Other religions have prayers of deliverance, but they are not sacramentals, as the rite of exorcism is. Muslim, Hindu, Jewish and other world religions often approach the Catholic Church for assistance on really difficult cases, long in duration or fierce in intensity. The Church, after fulfilling the process of discernment will then proceed. None are turned away. Roman Catholics are simply more aware of the process and the meaning behind the prayers and images.

Explanation of things or concepts of Church teachings that I take knowing entirely for granted, having been a lifelong devout Roman Catholic.

As Faith increases, superstition decreases.
God alone is the source, as Saint Paul explains in Ephesians 2:8 RSVCE. With your intellect and your will, you must submit genuinely and ask obediently, for this grace, which originates in Him. The body is subject to the will, the will is subject to the intellect, not the other way around. If we are ordered to God, we will find Him. He will then gift us with all the Faith we need.
Perversion and betrayal emerge when the disordered intellect becomes subject to the will, which is then subject to the body. Feelings have nothing to do with grace or Faith, since they can easily be accessed by the demonic. They cannot occupy the soul which belongs to God. With intellect and will only, fallen angels become parasites to vulnerable timid souls who have often been harmed and thus crave retaliatory power. They hand over their emotions and their bodies, which demons need, and which then become tormented and corrupt over time, through lies, manipulation, vice. No matter how much is promised it's false. Satan hates humanity, entirely and endlessly. It is Eternal Life or eternal damnation from the get go. The final bell rings at the moment of death. For us all. The Four Last Things; death, judgment, Heaven, hell.

The Most Holy Trinity
God the Father
God the Son
God the Holy Spirit
thus 3 Divine Persons in One Triune God
(Saints Augustine & Thomas Aquinas shed light on this c/o Summa Theologiae and The City of God)

The Incarnation/The Word Made Flesh/The birth of Jesus Christ/Christmas

Sacraments:
Baptism
First Holy Communion (Eucharist)
First Confession (Reconciliation)
Confirmation
Marriage
Holy Orders
Extreme Unction (Sacrament of the Sick, Last Rites)
* through these Sacraments, God's grace flows most effectively

Sacramentals:
The Rite of Exorcism (Major, Solemn)
Blessed Crucifix (Corpus Christi feastday was June 11, 60 days after Easter, so a cross without the Body of Christ is not enough, no jewels or corruptions)
Blessed Holy Water (Baptismal or other, especially the 45min ritual on Epiphany)
Blessed oils
Blessed salt
Blessed candles (traditionally in public, in unity as a congregation on Candlemas, February 2nd, the feast of the Presentation of Jesus, which ends the Christmas season)
Blessed palms (distributed Palm Sunday to be kept in the home all year)
Blessed Rosaries
Blessed medals or scapulars (Carmelite, Benedictine, Miraculous Medal, etc.)
Blessed Bibles - RSVCE (as The Word Incarnate, Jesus fulfilled the Old Testament messianic prophesies in the New Testament)
Sacred Icons (always blessed by an ordained RC priest)
Sacred images (usually blessed by an ordained RC priest)
Sacred statuary (usually blessed by an ordained RC priest)
Holy Relics of Vatican recognized Saints (blood, bone, hair, tissue, clothing) or of sacred items like the Wood Fragments of the Cross of the Crucifixion, the holy staircase Jesus walked up to meet Pontius Pilate, the creche of the Nativity, the Sword of Malta, etc.
* these are not lucky charms nor talismans nor amulets, since their power comes from the Theological Virtue of Faith, not from superstition, nor is it idolatry because no one prays to anything, only to God the Father Almighty, which gives it its supernatural ('above nature' applies only to God as Creator) aspect, not preternatural ('outside of nature' as a creation of God, including the 9 angelic realms, both preserved and fallen, for all time)
* nothing can offset the First Commandment without it being divination and that's a mortal sin
* it is a mortal sin to intentionally alter/deface/damage/destroy or steal any holy relic or sacred image/sacramental; old broken blessed rosaries are buried, old blessed books or prayer cards are buried or burned, last year's blessed palms are burned for use during this year's Ash Wednesday Mass, since blessed items can never be thrown out in the garbage, a serious sacrilege - vandalism is like a stranger entering your home and ripping up a photo of your own mother! Unbearably offensive and unjust - using images of Jesus, Mary, the saints unsanctioned by the Vatican as a fashion, etc. is also perverse sacrilege, which is quite different than a child drawing pictures of the Nativity, Easter, etc.
* pachamama pagan idols placed on any altar inside any Roman Catholic Church is unquestionable sacrilege, whether by a priest/Bishop/Pope or the laity or unbelievers - 06Dec2019 day of reparation - pagan images on Vatican issued collector coins must also be destroyed (perOct2020)

Saint Intercession
* we can ask anyone who has died, if we think they're in Heaven, to intercede for us on earth, All Saints and All Souls (November 01/02)
* if the Roman Catholic Church has investigated them and any attributed miracles, through the process of becoming blessed and venerable, leading to formal canonization, then they're included on the liturgical calender with their specified feastday, usually their date of death or near it
* Catholics do not worship saints, they ask for intercessory prayers the way we do as humans to other humans, when we or our loved ones need help

The Immaculate Heart of Mary and the Sacred Heart of Jesus (c/o Saint Margaret Mary Alocoque)
The Miraculous Medal (c/o Saint Catherine Labouré, Paris, France - her body remains incorrupt)
* TO JESUS THROUGH MARY (repeat this 50x if necessary!) defines that Catholics do not worship Mary and never have, she's venerated, as Mother of God, Queen of Heaven, of all Angels and Saints, her 4 dogmas soon to be 5, etc. Her power lies in her humility. She is the most perfect creation known to man. She has perfect coercive power over demons. Mary is not divine, but it's her submissive will and fiat, her 'yes' (be it done unto me according to Your Word), which allowed the Incarnation and redeemed mankind by defeating death. Her physical body (womb) gave Christ His DNA. The head of the ancient serpent was crushed by this highly educated 14 year old pious Jewish girl, and it hates that fact above all else. In her, its pride is eviscerated. When the Blessed Virgin Mary shows up at any exorcism, either invited or of her own accord, it's over!
* her power lies in her humility, her Immaculate Conception, her perpetual virginity, and as the 'new Eve'; also with Saint Joseph, his humility, chastity, obedience, and protection of Mary and Jesus, which is why their litanies include 'terror of demons' in them, as does the litany to Raphael the Archangel
* the evil one (and the demonic armies of fallen angels) hates the Most Holy Rosary, especially in the form of Gregorian Chant in Latin by the Benedictine and Franciscan communities, since it's the New Testament on beads; Saint Paul says that the Word of God is sharper than a two-edged sword, so meditating on the Mysteries of the Rosary while simultaneously praying the Apostles Creed, Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be, Fatima Prayer, Hail Holy Queen, etc. is calling to mind the humanity of Christ, His hidden (30yrs) and His public (3yrs) life - both contemplative and vocal prayers united for our own sake, since as people of Faith we discipline our senses by using them all at the same time, and that focus is offered up as a sacrifice or mortification in union with the prayers themselves (said or sung aloud, fingers follow each bead or connective chain/rope, see lit candles or sacred images/Crucifix/Church setting/etc., smell of incense or roses/flowers, taste of the Mass (the Eucharist as Body, Blood, Soul, Divinity of Jesus Christ) as public rosaries are often prayed in Church following Mass in public groups by those with fervent devotion, or by families at home after a meal together, or by groups fighting heresies, wars, personal torment or geographic obstacles (ie. Bishop in Nigeria), etc.

Names and Shapes

* my intention is to minimize use of demonic names for my own protection and when I do, it will always be lower case
* my terminology will include the evil one, evil spirits, fallen angels, etc.
* satan is Hebrew, diabolos/devil is Greek, diabolus/Latin and the definitions might vary between 'the accuser' or 'the slanderer' and 'the scatterer'
* Lucifer means 'angel of light' which was how God created him/it in the highest of the 9 angelic choirs or realms (Seraphim) which are all mentioned in the book by Matt Baglio and also in the Bible
* the rejection of the divine plan, through pride/envy/etc. is what damned him/it for all eternity - the Incarnation could not be tolerated, since the Lord God was lowering Himself to the level of a human creature (spirit, limited intellect, body), which is inferior to an angelic creature (spirit, superior intellect)
* some consider them (Lucifer/satan) separate entities (Father Amorth) and some consider them 2 sides of the same coin, before the battle with Michael the Archangel, and after (Father Thomas)
* some exorcists use satan and beelzebub or beelzebul interchangeably
* beelzebul and baal are the same form of each other and it's the origin of 'lord of the flies' nickname
* the evil one is said to have 5 hierarchical generals at 'the table'; b a l l b (nope, not naming them)
* senses are affected; smell (foul odour), taste (bitter/bile), touch (super strength or aversion to the sacred), sight (hard to even look at the priest or a church), hearing (demonic interference often only heard by the victims)
* the voice seems to emerge from the stomach not the throat, always loud, gruff, angry, moaning and/or shrieks, etc.
* now I know exactly why my father flipped out when I brought home a copy of Lord of the Flies by Golding to study in highschool English class - suffice it to say, he switched me to Wuthering Heights and EngLit Gothic love was born

Manifestations
(none of these cast shadows)
* dragon, serpent, asp, scorpion, reptile
* bull, lion, leopard, wolf, black dog, black cat, monkey, crow
* toad, frog, turtle, ants, flies, snails
* vomited nails
* jaw unhinges and slides to the side
* claw gouge marks on back, chest, face, walls, etc.
* eyes and lips turn black and curl up and back or in and disappear
* facial or physical contortions resembling a snake, arching on floor to mimic slithering
* severe coughing or choking fits, lasting 15+ minutes
* frothing at the mouth / drooling buckets / mucous through skin (all only during the solemn rite of exorcism, not before or after)
* inverted crosses - this I never understood because Saint Peter was crucified upside down, feeling unworthy to die as Christ did, which makes that image of his cross, and Saint Andrew's cross (×) sacred relics ("You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God" is his notable scripture quote)

Incidentally, the motto of Saint Anthony of Padua is engraved onto the base of the obelisk located in the centre of Saint Peter's Square in Rome (Vatican), which was the last thing Saint Peter saw in the Roman Colosseum before he died. It was moved to its current location, exorcised with this powerful prayer and ritual, blessed and solemnized, in order to consecrate a once pagan idol (brought from Egypt to Italy) to Christ Crucified. Many former pagan sites or celebrations have been transformed by this type of Christ-centred worship, ie. Saint Patrick blessing former druid land use.

Ecce Crucem Domini!
Fugite partes adversae!
Vicit Leo de tribu Juda,
Radix David! Alleluia!
English translation: Behold the Cross of the Lord! Be gone all evil powers! The Lion of the tribe of Judah, the root of David, has conquered! Alleluia!
Saint Anthony of Padua, pray for us. For Italy.
Saint Teresa of Avila, pray for us. For Rome.
Saint Peter, pray for us. For the Holy See.
Reclaim all holy ground and restore the Vatican to heroic virtue and sanctity. Amen.

Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us.
Saint Margaret Mary Alocoque, pray for us.
Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, pity us.
"My Immaculate Heart will triumph."
Saints Jacinta and Francisco Marto, pray for us. We know the prayers of children and of victim souls are the most pleasing to Jesus Christ. Sister Lucia, pray for us. For all consecrated virgins. Our Lady of Fatima, we unite all suffering by, and persecution of, the Faithful to your perfect humility, for the glory of God, and beg you to defeat the ancient one with your dainty feminine holy heel. His pride cannot withstand it. Fling evil back into the abyss. Amen.

Five signs of full possession or presence of the diabolical are considered to be; super strength, secret knowledge, aversion to the sacred, unknown foreign language knowledge or Latin/doctrine/dogma indepth details, levitation, etc.

The team Father Gary uses includes; medical doctor, psychologist, psychiatrist, priests with knowledge of language required ie. Spanish or Vietnamese), Theologian specialist priest, prayer team usually 3 couples, etc. Each person in the room is under strict obedient discipline to the designated diocesan exorcist, for the safety of the victim and all involved in this Healing Ministry. No one but him can confront the demon directly, as he carries the authority of Christ into this battle, through Apostolic Succession.

Macbeth witches

* see interview on Stratford Festival (Ontario) .ca website for reunion of the three actresses including Brigit Wilson, for indepth discussion about their preparation for the roles, in order to keep themselves and everyone else safe during the production
* the interviews and discussions accompany each of 12 films featured in their StratFest @ Home film festival that began on Shakespeare 's birthday, April 23, since they cannot open their theatres for this 2020 summer season (1st time since 1953 opening season)
* one of the gals drew upon Haiti and the mixture of Roman Catholicism right alongside voodoo, etc.
* unfortunately both the actor playing Macbeth (Ian Lake) and the actress playing Lady Macbeth were both seriously injured; one just prior to rehearsals commencing, the other shortly after filming, very late in the season, understudies needed to fill in and complete the run

Not to be frivolous, but it occurrs to me this thread would be an excellent resource for a budding horror-story writer.

>16 alaudacorax: In researching the book itself before deciding to read it, the fact that the author took three years to complete his research (from the time of his enrollment in the Vatican sanctioned course in Sep/Oct2005 until Mar/Apr2006 through to 2009) and edits made considerable difference. Had his publishers insisted on cranking it out in three months instead, I likely would have passed. I liked that he was not a priest but was surrounded by priests from all over the world, all trying to make sense of the same thing. Lots of skeptics in that room initially. Even the Bishops who appointed these priests as diocesan exorcists, doing their duty according to Pope John Paul ii and later Pope Benedict xvi, but had plenty of doubt. Truthful deep dives are always refreshing. 'Keeners' were immediately excluded.

The book is so dense with material and resource information, which exists alongside the biography element, that filmmakers must have had a heyday sifting through content to decide where to start and how to shape the plot. Every director/actor/writer could easily emerge with a different vantage point. The actors were protected by Father Gary's intervention throughout filming, by unanimous request.

I just saw an interview re: chronological sonnets by Shakespeare (Stanley Wells, a Shakespeare scholar, and Paul Edmondson) being published this year (unfortunately unable to visit Stratford, Ontario again for their autumn book launch), and having just watched The 2015 performance of The Adventures of Pericles, then Hamlet again, the collided worlds of Dickens and Old/New Testaments and Shakespeare and this particular 'eternal topic' really made for vivid dreams this week. I'm not drawn to horror writing, but maybe I should reconsider, since lots of graphic impressions emerge from dreams, ie. H.P. Lovecraft, etc. However, dreams are best ignored. On a lighter note, Happy Canada Day!

William Shakespeare abounds with variations on this theme:

Hamlet
...wicked speed - incestuous sheets - it cannot come to good
...I'll speak to it, though hell itself should gape
...foul deeds will rise
...goblin
...Yes, by St. Patrick
...there are more things of heaven and earth than are dreamt of Horatio in your philosophy
...if devil it be
...tis now the very witching time of night when churchyards yawn and hell itself breathes out contagions to this world
...what devil was it - save me, and hover over me with your wings you heavenly guard

Claudius
...oh my offence is rank, it smells to heaven
...it hath the primal eldest curse upon it, a brother's murder - pray can I not
...cursed hand - crown, ambition, queen - may one be pardoned and retain the offence?
...help Angels help!
...and where the offence is, let the great axe fall

Laertes
...To hell, allegiance. Vows to the blackest devil, conscience and grace to the profoundest pit. I dare damnation.

Horatio
...Angels and ministers of grace defend us
...Stay, and speak!
...upon my life, this spirit dumb to us will speak to him
...flights of angels sing thee to thy rest

NB - the theme of incest also opened Pericles, although between father/daughter, not mother/uncle
