There is a whole convoluted path that led me to this topic, so I will likely take my time to retrace it, unraveling the ball of twine as I go, so as to not lose my place again. Suffice it to say that a book was recommended, but I bided my time until now. A few posts exist in other threads, which I will have to seek out in order to cross reference myself, but all in due time.
Matt Baglio's The Rite: The Making of a Modern Exorcist
Having not yet seen the film The Rite (2011) did not diminish the impact of the book. It's written as a biography by a journalist about primarily Father Gary Thomas. They were enrolled in the same Vatican course in Rome, so the relationship and topic evolved naturally, but not indelicately. I've seen clips featuring Anthony Hopkins as the priest providing the apprenticeship, and the young Irish actor they chose to depict Father Gary at the time. Avoiding spoilers will be tough, but que sera.

by The Reverend Father Vincent P. Lampert (official exorcist for an Indiana parish) called 'The Battle Against Satan and His Demons' published SEP2020. His focus is not so much on the distractive nature of the devil, and the theatrics, but on the infinite power of Christ to heal those sincerely wanting to be freed from the chaos and destruction in their lives. One can never be forced into exorcism, it must be an act of the will to want it. That's why demons manifest at this point, and are so unhappy, since they do not want to be released from their host, as any parasite would not, nor do they want the affliction of the person to be all for not. Demons hate mankind, they especially hate the Blessed Virgin Mary, since she is the most perfect creation of God. Mankind was raised above the angelic when Christ was incarnated in Mary's womb by the Holy Spirit. Demons will do anything to deceive/distract/discourage/disgrace (humiliate) anyone, which is why they despise Roman Catholic exorcists, since they have been granted the power to remove them, through the sacred rites and prayers of the Church, leading back to Saint Peter, the first pope. Only bishops can assign priests as exorcists, but all bishops, by their title, are exorcists. Many are undeserving, since they don't take the devil seriously, but they still hold the office and authority necessary to give the priest his official ministry. This book by Father Lampert makes it clear, that the power lies not with the devil but with Jesus Christ. And when Mary shows up, it's over.

Temptation (manipulation of the imagination, memory, senses, etc. and can even use good things against good people to inflict suffering, very subtle, very gradual)
Vexation or Dolors/Dolours (purification of a saint, through physical or mental means, either requested or allowed as an intensification of sanctity)
* the discernment process determines whether a simple blessing is needed, or a minor exorcism with deprecatory prayers (indirect), or a major exorcism with the Latin Ritual updated from 1614 in 1998 which includes both deprecatory and imprecatory (direct command) prayers

Michael the Archangel is the one invoked to protect the universal Church, and the prayer to him written by Pope Leo xiii in 1884 is a Partial Indulgence for the Faithful. He cast into hell, satan and all the evil spirits (approximately one third) who defied God the Father through their own free will, which was permanent and irrevocable. Angels are not saints. Saints are human creatures who've died after their birth and life. Angels were never humans, nor are they ghosts.
Michael, Gabriel, Raphael are all Archangels. Michael does battle, Gabriel does communication (the Annunciation), Raphael does healing and music, etc. (per the book of Tobit, one of the 7 books removed from the protestant bibles by Luther/Calvin, etc.)
Tobit 5 describes the Archangel Raphael appearing in human disguise in order to accompany (light/guard/rule/guide) Tobias, defeat a demon torturing a young woman's betrothed (repeated persecution), as well as bring healing to Tobit, the blind father, which rewards his faithfulness and obedience to God by burying the dead (as a Jewish man, a minority, in dangerous circumstances).

Michael, Gabriel, Raphael are all Archangels. Michael does battle, Gabriel does communication (the Annunciation), Raphael does healing and music, etc. (per the book of Tobit, one of the 7 books removed from the protestant bibles by Luther/Calvin, etc.)
Tobit 5 describes the Archangel Raphael appearing in human disguise in order to accompany (light/guard/rule/guide) Tobias, defeat a demon torturing a young woman's betrothed (repeated persecution), as well as bring healing to Tobit, the blind father, which rewards his faithfulness and obedience to God by burying the dead (as a Jewish man, a minority, in dangerous circumstances).

Highly appropriate that today is June 29th, the Solemn Feastday for two martyrs, Peter and Paul. Saint Peter and Saint Paul, pray for us! I consecrate this thread and all content to your safe keeping. May the Holy Name of Jesus Christ protect all input and output for the spiritual safety of all. Amen.
It's important to avoid harmful curiosity or fascination with the demonic, the occult, curses, satanism, witchcraft/wicca, new age, etc. My purpose here is to stick with topics covered in Matt Baglio's book. Much of it is written for the protection of the Faithful and their families, to safeguard them against unnecessary attack, but also as a teaching aid to recognize potential symptoms when something goes horribly wrong. Arming oneself against demons is simply a responsible preventative measure for any Christian based on historical practices, doctrine, dogma, utilizing ritual and tradition. It's much easier to stay off the radar than to become one of the victims. That being said, Catholics don't fear the evil one, they despise and pity him/it. The Fear of God is a gift of the Holy Spirit and represents Awe. The demons and their leader have already been defeated by the Crucifixion, when God the Son, Jesus Christ defeated death by dying. The Resurrection and Ascension were for the glory of God the Father. This is why demons hate mankind with perpetual vengeance. Their lies can never be trusted, except when commanded to speak the absolute Truth which causes them pain, but they are bound by God's ordered law. That authority is what each exorcist walks in the room with, and each fallen angel knows it. They take a brutal beating everytime, which wears them down. That's why they all prefer to hide.
Catechism cites this, as does all Vatican instruction concerning the various publications of The Ritual (1614, 1952, 1998, etc.). Once, it had to be done in either Latin or Italian, but now other languages have been approved, like French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, etc. But the English version requested by the USCCB may still be awaiting Vatican acceptance of the translation.
The solemn or formal or major exorcism must only be conducted by a priest who has been appointed by the Bishop of his diocese to do so. The Apostolic Authority of each Bishop, from the long line all the way back to Saint Peter, who was appointed by Christ Himself, is what gives order to the process, by which the fallen angels are bound. A minor exorcism can be done by any ordained RC priest. Parents have authority over themselves, their children, their homes, through the Sacrament of Baptism.
Other religions have prayers of deliverance, but they are not sacramentals, as the rite of exorcism is. Muslim, Hindu, Jewish and other world religions often approach the Catholic Church for assistance on really difficult cases, long in duration or fierce in intensity. The Church, after fulfilling the process of discernment will then proceed. None are turned away. Roman Catholics are simply more aware of the process and the meaning behind the prayers and images.

Explanation of things or concepts of Church teachings that I take knowing entirely for granted, having been a lifelong devout Roman Catholic.
As Faith increases, superstition decreases.
God alone is the source, as Saint Paul explains in Ephesians 2:8 RSVCE. With your intellect and your will, you must submit genuinely and ask obediently, for this grace, which originates in Him. The body is subject to the will, the will is subject to the intellect, not the other way around. If we are ordered to God, we will find Him. He will then gift us with all the Faith we need.
Perversion and betrayal emerge when the disordered intellect becomes subject to the will, which is then subject to the body. Feelings have nothing to do with grace or Faith, since they can easily be accessed by the demonic. They cannot occupy the soul which belongs to God. With intellect and will only, fallen angels become parasites to vulnerable timid souls who have often been harmed and thus crave retaliatory power. They hand over their emotions and their bodies, which demons need, and which then become tormented and corrupt over time, through lies, manipulation, vice. No matter how much is promised it's false. Satan hates humanity, entirely and endlessly. It is Eternal Life or eternal damnation from the get go. The final bell rings at the moment of death. For us all. The Four Last Things; death, judgment, Heaven, hell.

The body is subject to the will, the will is subject to the intellect, not the other way around. If we are ordered to God, we will find Him. He will then gift us with all the Faith we need.
Perversion and betrayal emerge when the disordered intellect becomes subject to the will, which is then subject to the body. Feelings have nothing to do with grace or Faith, since they can easily be accessed by the demonic. They cannot occupy the soul which belongs to God. With intellect and will only, fallen angels become parasites to vulnerable timid souls who have often been harmed and thus crave retaliatory power. They hand over their emotions and their bodies, which demons need, and which then become tormented and corrupt over time, through lies, manipulation, vice. No matter how much is promised it's false. Satan hates humanity, entirely and endlessly. It is Eternal Life or eternal damnation from the get go. The final bell rings at the moment of death. For us all. >16 alaudacorax: In researching the book itself before deciding to read it, the fact that the author took three years to complete his research (from the time of his enrollment in the Vatican sanctioned course in Sep/Oct2005 until Mar/Apr2006 through to 2009) and edits made considerable difference. Had his publishers insisted on cranking it out in three months instead, I likely would have passed. I liked that he was not a priest but was surrounded by priests from all over the world, all trying to make sense of the same thing. Lots of skeptics in that room initially. Even the Bishops who appointed these priests as diocesan exorcists, doing their duty according to Pope John Paul ii and later Pope Benedict xvi, but had plenty of doubt. Truthful deep dives are always refreshing. 'Keeners' were immediately excluded.
The book is so dense with material and resource information, which exists alongside the biography element, that filmmakers must have had a heyday sifting through content to decide where to start and how to shape the plot. Every director/actor/writer could easily emerge with a different vantage point. The actors were protected by Father Gary's intervention throughout filming, by unanimous request.
I just saw an interview re: chronological sonnets by Shakespeare (Stanley Wells, a Shakespeare scholar, and Paul Edmondson) being published this year (unfortunately unable to visit Stratford, Ontario again for their autumn book launch), and having just watched The 2015 performance of The Adventures of Pericles, then Hamlet again, the collided worlds of Dickens and Old/New Testaments and Shakespeare and this particular 'eternal topic' really made for vivid dreams this week. I'm not drawn to horror writing, but maybe I should reconsider, since lots of graphic impressions emerge from dreams, ie. H.P. Lovecraft, etc. However, dreams are best ignored. On a lighter note, Happy Canada Day!
