I won 2 books in the member give away by the same author. The links he sent me linked to a site where he's selling his books. Plus I've gotten around 20 emails from him. It's bugging me enough that I had to block him. Is this allowed ? If not who do I report him to?

I'd contact Kristie (info@librarything) about it. Someone on staff should handle it.

>4 Crazy_Bunny_Lady: My guess is that they put you on their author mailing list--which is very against the rules here.

And it's lovely to see another bunny-obsessed book lover! My Beatrice-bun is a rescue from a hoarding situation, but she's lived the pampered life of a well-loved house rabbit since then.

Hi dear
I study LIS at the University of Isfahan, lran. I intend to work on the topic of my dissertation which is about suggesting some books to the readers of “Teens Books” according to their characteristics, then I’ve also decided to design a Suggesting-System related to this topic. In this case, I would like to ask you to help us filling the following questionnaire;
Yours sincerely
Maryam

>10 bergs47: Well, at least it's a one-time non-commercial thing, unlike the author newsletter situation, but IMO it doesn't seem appropriate to be sending out to individual LT members unsolicited. Posting a public Talk thread would have been better for that kind of thing than sending individuals emails or private profile comments. How did you receive this?

Her again?

Do you have a link to the profile? I think she's been warned before. Is this her? http://www.librarything.com/profile/maaryam

Yes, see: http://www.librarything.com/topic/322975#7286773

I asked Tim about this one and he said LT doesn't have a policy regarding this kind of thing.
"But messages are capped at ?25 per day, so if they are trying to reach a lot of people, they will fail and get locked out. My read is that this is indeed an LIS student. I would clamp down on many other such types, but I'm going to leave them be; seems harmless and/or educational. If I get more complaints, I may reconsider."

I looked at the survey and it has nothing to do with books, just personal questions.

:eyeroll:

We've been telling these kids for years that their surveys are not welcome - it's the usual "one is okay, a hundred are not, so you have to stop the one" situation - and now Tim overrides us because he has a soft spot for this one?

(And they're usually not "educational", either. Terrible survey design with uncontrolled self-selected responders teaches nothing.)

>15 bergs47: You aren't alone. We've marked the profile as spam once before, but Tim brought her back. This has been going on for ... almost 3 months? ... at the least. They messaged me back in October.

I said something to Kristi back on October 28. She said Tim had allowed it, but the more we complain, they'd have to reassess. Since we've still not gotten official word from Tim and Co regarding this being legal, I'm tempted to flag the profile again. And If Tim and Co want to allow these surveys, they have to insist that the user sending them out includes some form of note that says they've been approved by the LT staff. Then we can just delete and ignore. No note means spam flag.

ETA: I sent a follow up message to Kristi after posting this, just to see what was discussed from the Admin.

Latest recipient of a maaryam pm about her survey. I replied that I found her questions intrusive and not terribly relevant, and that I would not be participating...and that she might really want to consider going elsewhere, as she was annoying a lot of people.

>12 lilithcat:, >15 bergs47:, >17 Marissa_Doyle: I was finally able to catch up with Tim on this yesterday, and after further complaints he gave maaryam a warning to cease invitations. So, I'm suspending the account. Thanks for your patience!
