I frequently miss out on these sort of things. Either I forget or am told after the fact.
Here is one:

Have any of you had experience with invaluable.com? They are having an auction tomorrow with some really interesting works but the reviews I’ve found suggest they are terrible. I’ve been hankering for a book with a nice fore edge painting and they advertised quite a number. I’m afraid to take a chance.

>3 varielle: Invaluable.com doesn't run auctions. They act as an aggregator for auction houses. The particular one you are interested in is run by Regency Antique Books. They use Invaluable as a middle-man. Some houses list on Invaluable and you can place your bid there or go to the auction house's own site and bid there with preference given to the direct bids. Regency apparently only goes through Invaluable. Cannot speak to their reliability, service, etc.

They do have a nice selection of fore edge paintings, however.

>3 varielle: What Glacierman said. I bought stuff through invaluable before, but that site itself is just an aggregator. Your experience will depend on the auction house/seller.

Another thing to watch for is that sometimes on Invaluable there is a mark-up of the buyer's premium over what you would pay if you deal directly with the auction house. There will be a notice/badge sometimes that indicates you pay the same premium amount. It can be upwards of 5%. I prefer dealing directly with the auction house if I can.

>6 dpbbooks: Thank you for pointing this out, I wasn't aware and have actually been looking at a few items on Invaluable recently.
