Readers Choice 2020 (XVI)

Does anyone have ideas on when the selection may arrive?

2mortalalliance
Feb 27, 2020, 4:27 pm

Still seems to be crickets on this front... I thought in the past that they sent out new lists in the late fall?

3treereader
Feb 27, 2020, 5:51 pm

I may have received the latest list last week. I was confused about it because at least one item would have been a recent reprint and none of the remaining piqued my interest, which isn't normal for the Reader's Choice series. I usually find about four that I want.

I'll look for the list when I get home and see if it was indeed the latest Reader's Choice brouchure.

Ok, I really don't know if this is the Reader's Choice 2020 (XVI) list but it is a list that just came in the mail within the last week. Maybe it's the 2019 list, as I know I've already picked up Dragon Teeth, but none of the other titles sound familiar to me, at least not in the context of Easton Press publications.

The Untamed - Max Brand (2585-086)
Dragon Teeth - Michael Crichton (2585-091) (marked as sold out)
Herland - Charlotte Perkins Gilman (2585-093)
Herzog - Saul Bellow (2585-094)
The Iron Heel - Jack London (2585-096)
The Monkey Wrench Gang - Edward Abbey (2585-097)
Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House - Eric Hodgins (2585-098)
The Railway Children - Edith Nesbit (2585-100)

Yeah, this is the remainder of their inventory from the last Readers Choice. Thanks for the heads up though!

I have not received anything on this year's Reader's Choice either! I normally get the offer by mail sometime between Jan-Mar.
I will keep a lookout and post here if I receive something.

I asked one of their representatives a couple of days ago, but she didn't have any information on when the new Reader's Choice listing would be available.

I am all over that Steinbeck - I need to dream of a beautiful America right now - cooped up inside. And I LOVE leather versions of Agatha Christie. Laura looks nice too - I'm a sucker for detective novels. Steppenwolf looks like an interesting cerebral read - apparently it is a very powerful book.

I am the only one who has an impression that the books are now $10 more expensive per volume, after the discount, than they were this year?
I seem to remember that the cost was $64.95 per volume if you subscribe to the series, but now it is $74.95.

I received my flyer in the mail today too!!! Looking forward to picking up some of these titles for my reading enjoyment.
I did notice that too, how the price has gone up compared to the past few years which is not cool!

I'm new EP fan so is this going to be posted on their website to buy? or I'll have to 'subscribe' to something?

21mortalalliance
Editado: Abr 5, 2020, 10:53 am

>20 HamburgerHelper:

If you receive promotional mail from EP, you should receive this in the mail and respond via the mail to “reserve” your copies (note:reserving doesn’t reserve anything, they will send you one book per month by default and if they run out of supply before they get to “your” book, you don’t get a book). Recommend subscribing to two books per month. The last couple years I’ve emailed their customer service team with the Item # and which books I want, etc. and they’ve been able to take care of me.

If you don’t see a flyer in the next week or so, email customer service with the item # and information from the flyer that was uploaded here earlier.

For me: Laura, Murder on the Links,Topper
Possibly: Our Man in Havana
Already have in EP: Adventures of Robin Hood
Other Editions Preferred: Travels with Charley (either a 1st edition, later printing, or the FS vesion may be a better choice)
Pass: Steppenwolf
Confused: Tarzan and the Golden Lion. (As I don't have other EP Tarzan books, I am concerned that getting this one may make me want to get the others

>20 HamburgerHelper: You can also request that the Reader's Choice books ship to you as they become available rather than a certain number per month. Enjoy!

>23 uncledaveh:

I believe that this is the default approach. When I submit my order each year by mail, I make no indication about the speed or frequency I'd like them to be shipped. They end up being shipped out as they become available.

If anyone receiving any of these editions would like to post some photos and give us your thoughts on the editions, we would be glad to hear it. Most of the Reader's Choice may only have a frontispiece and no other illustrations, so I would like to hear the attributes of some of these.

Just inquired with customer service as to which titles were available. Was in formed there were 4 titles in stock at this time. If my poor memory serves me correctly, Steppenwolf, Topper, and The Murder on the Links are the other three. I asked her to ship all four immediately if anybody else is so inclined. Oh, Laura is the first book being sent out to everyone.

I have received "Laura". The book has a frontispiece; I see no other illustrations, nor I can find the name of the artist who did the frontispiece.
The book is rather small, but nicely decorated and with pictures in on the front of the cover and on the spine. The back has only decorated boarders. My photography skills or familiarity with how to post pictures on this site are too low for me to post any sample photos, sorry!
Overall, the book seems to be well made.

40booksforreading

I am considering canceling my subscription to this series for the remaining titles. With tax, the cost per book is above $80, which to me seems excessive for what I get. Plus, I can think of some other beautiful books that I can get for more than $560, which is what the remaining titles in the series would cost me this year.

Hello everybody. I received Laura about two weeks ago. I called in for a replacement due to some (minor) glue residue in the endpapers and received my replacement yesterday. The replacement has a noticeable scratch to the top gilded page end and the back endpaper is not completely glued to its pastedown. I'm not sure I will ask for another replacement at this time, I will probably just return the replacement and keep the first one I got. The Adventures Of Robin Hood is set to ship on July 31 for me.

48treereader
Jul 25, 2020, 9:00 pm

>47 judgethatcher:

Ask for another replacement. If customers don't collectively draw a line on quality, quality is guaranteed to decline. Why should we pay $80 for one of these books if it arrives with obvious defects? If they want to sell very good -to- excellent (i.e., not new) then they should sell them as such at a lower price point.

49judgethatcher
Jul 25, 2020, 11:01 pm

I definitely see your point and agree with you. I wonder how many of the books I still have in EP shrink wrap could have these imperfections-I had a habit of removing the wrap only when I was going to read the book, I never before thought I should check for quality with new EP books, I do now. I hope none of them have any issues when I get around to reading them.

50treereader
Jul 26, 2020, 2:19 am

>49 judgethatcher:

I used to use to do the same thing, using the shrink wrap as a clever way of identifying the to-be-read list. I realized, though, that many of the books end up being out of print and not replaceable by the time I get to reading them, rendering replacement (via EP) impossible.

I have been buying the Reader's Choice collections annually and this year the cost is higher than I want to spend on these books. I have opted out of purchasing these titles and going back to the basics and finish collecting titles from The Greatest Books Ever Written series!
Enjoy and cheers!

I have canceled my subscription, too, after receiving "Laura", which is a very good novel, by the way. I enjoyed the work.
I think that the cost of Reader's Choice books is too high for what I get, and I can redirect these funds to other, more exciting-to-me editions.

That said, I am not trying to convince or persuade anybody else to cancel the subscriptions. The books are nice, and the perceptions of values are very individual for each of us. Just responding to >51 Tolkienfan:

53Tolkienfan

>52 booksforreading: I completely understand and it was a hard decision to make after collecting Reader's Choice titles for the past 6 years, but when prices increase for these books and nothing has been added or improved to the materials or process to justify a price increase, it was time to cancel and start picking up titles from the second hand market.
