Barbara's 2020 ROOT Challenge

What a wonderful way to get the TBR pile or in my case the To Be Heard pile down. I'm an audible addict and it's real easy to keep adding books when they just pile up in the Cloud and you don't have to stare at the piles.

I choose 25 as my commitment as I am going to apply the Bingo list to my ROOTS. Since I have been buying audio books since the 1980s and audible books since 2006 I have quite a few that have fallen through the digital cracks and searching for those that fit the criteria will help spur me on.

!st ROOT The Lathe of Heaven by Ursula K. Le Guin.

I can't believe I didn't read Le Guin during her lifetime. What a writer!!

The story written in 1971 is about a man in the future (2002), George Orr who has "effective" dreams. That is, whatever he dreams becomes reality. He dreams his Aunt died five years previous and when he awakens she is gone and everyone's memories of her life for the last five years is gone as well, replaced by their belief in the fact she died five years ago. He is sent to a psychiatrist who attempts to use George to manipulate reality into what the psychiatrist believes are improvements.

The world which Le Guin portrays in this future 2002 includes fighting in Afghanistan, tensions in the Middle East and major climate changes due to global warming.

An amazingly prescient novel, beautifully written and a great read.

That was my first (and still only) Le Guin and I really liked that one as well. I've been keeping an eye out on recommended lists to see which book of hers to read next.
