>1 Carol420: I hope it's not too pedantic to point out that Britain is a can of worms, and whatever system you use is going to have its downsides. For example, the "preserved Welsh counties" you are using were only local administrative areas (county councils) between 1974 and 1996. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preserved_counties_of_Wales. These days they are only used for the annual appointment of some of "the great and the good" (i) as sheriff (not a US Wild West law enforcement officer, but a ceremonial magistrate), (ii) as lord lieutenant (in theory responsible for the county militia, but in reality since 1871 just a fancy title with a fancy hat), and (iii) for the purposes of the Sea Fisheries (Shellfish) Act 1967, which is organised by the sea shores of the preserved counties. I didn't know that last one till Wikipedia told me. We really are some sort of Ruritania!

Most people in Wales consider themselves inhabitants of the thirteen traditional counties listed in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historic_counties_of_Wales. Likewise most people in England probably achor themselves in the traditional counties, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historic_counties_of_England, rather than the current administrative units, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Counties_of_England.

This might have reprecussions for your reading programme. For example, Swallows and Amazons, the quintessential Lake District children's book was set entirely in Lancashire among Lancastrians when it was written, even if the area has been administered by Cumbria County Council since 1974.

Ditto Scotland: historic counties, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shires_of_Scotland, and current administrative councils, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Local_government_in_Scotland. Robert Louis Stevenson, The Master of Ballantrae (1889) is set in Dumfriesshire. By lumping it into the modern council area of Dumfries and Galloway, it would have to compete with Walter Scott's Guy Mannering, set somewhere in Galloway (shired into Wigtownshire and Kirkudbrightshire), and Dorothy L. Sayers, The five red herrings ('Suspicious characters' in the USA, and set in Kirkudbrightshire), both worth reading in their own rights.

Good luck.

>3 Cynfelyn: Thanks for this information, as you say whatever system we used would have its downside as they have changed on a number of occasions.

I used this article to try and help me choose the areas : https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Counties_of_Wales

When making the decision I used the one that might make it easier to choose books for. For example, the principal areas of Wales had some very small areas in South Wales that I thought would would make it difficult to find books for those areas, especially for anyone in the US or Canada. So really the choice was a bit arbitrary, but to help I cross referenced to some of the Principal areas in Wales (or at least I hope I did).

Funnily enough I almost did use the Historical Counties of Wales.

Hopefully people can bear with the organisational choices I made for this fun challenge.

Whoa! IDK.........This looks pretty daunting to me. But I will see what I can do with it.

>5 rainpebble: The aim is just to dip in and not necessarily get to them all. Just choose some and work towards them. As a group collectively i’m Sure we can get to most. 😊

>4 Andrew-theQM: Fair enough. Before the 1974 local government reorganization, there was a bit of a range of populations at county level, from Lancashire (c.6 million) at one end to Radnorshire (c.18 thousand) at the other. At bit like comparing California and Rhode Island in the US. In Wales, roughly speaking, you could say that a third lived in Monmouthshire, a third in Glamorgan (these two being coal-mining and iron-smelting counties on the south coast), and the last third in the other eleven counties.

The modern county councils throughout Britain, and to some extent the "preserved counties" of Wales, are more equal in population.

Whether you "do" Powys or Radnorshire, you could do worse than Francis Kilvert, Kilvert's diary.

I might suggest for anyone looking for books set in Grampian (region) of scotland...that all of Ann Cleeve's Vera Stanhope series is set there and her Shetland Island (Scotland) series is set in ...where else?...The Shetland Islands.

>9 Andrew-theQM: You are right! Now what books have I read that always have the Grampian police coming to the rescue???? I thought it was Vera. Should have looked. I was right though about the Shetland Island series...so that was something in my favor:) I'll have to have a conference with Mr. Google.
