2020 Annual Group Challenge : Seperated By a Pond Tour

Separated by a Pond Tour

This is the collective Group Challenge for The Annual Challenge for 2020 where, between us, we are looking to try and visit the states, counties and provinces of The USA, Canada, England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Some may be easier than others!

To get a book added to the challenge post it below when you have read it, giving the book title, author and which state, county or province it visited. I will then allocate it to the right state / county / province. The book only has to visit the location and not all be set in that area. Each book can only be used for one state, county or province.

For the challenge in this group any genre of books can be used.

Good luck and happy travels, and enjoy this fun challenge...

England
City of London - The Night Stalker - Robert Bryndza
Somerset - Daisy in Chains - Sharon Bolton

Have you finished these, or are they ones you are planning to read. I’m reading A Crime of Hate by L J Sellers, which is set in Eugene, Oregon. Love that series - Detective Wade Jackson.

I'm finished with The Sharon Bolton book and have about 30 pages left of The Robert Bryndza book. I'll be done with it in just a few minutes.

>10 Carol420: That’s an accelerated start to the year. 👏👏👏

12Carol420
Ene 1, 2020, 12:48 pm

>11 Andrew-theQM: I started them before we started the group read and was very near to being done yesterday but I figured as long as I finished them in January and I listed them bot in my January reads it was okay. I imagine that everything we find that is in England will more than likely be London...Scotland, Edinburgh...Ireland...Dublin and Wales...something no one can pronounce let alone spell. The U.S. is going to be littered with New York...New York City, California..Los Angles etc... Everybody knows the big cities so authors tend to use them rather that going out on a limb to find a lesser known one. That is starting to change to some degree. I was amazed to find Somerset.

13Andrew-theQM
Editado: Ene 1, 2020, 2:01 pm

>12 Carol420: It definitely counts if it’s finished in January. Unusually for me I finished all books before midnight yesterday - so 2020 is a total clean slate. There are a number of detective books from around the UK and in rural areas. Robert Goddard Books also tend to be based around the country. I think Wales, Scotland Ireland and the Republic could present greater challenges - not to mention Canada. Should be an interesting year.

Oh wow! What a great challenge. I'm currently reading the final two Irene Radford books, so there is Edinburgh, the fictional Kirkenwood from the North of England (near the Scottish border but she's the first to say it's fictionalized) and the City of London. I'll keep this list in mind, too, when I select books to read for this year.

Thank you for doing such extensive work on naming counties setting up this challenge. Having your skills is a boon to this group!

15threadnsong
Ene 1, 2020, 3:11 pm

>12 Carol420: So there are some great murder mysteries set in and around Atlanta by Karin Slaughter and Kathy Hogan Trochek. And Patricia Cornwall sets hers in the DC area (though you've probably read all of them :)). And James Kellerman is the Los Angeles area.

If you really want to get Southern gothic-y, Flannery O'Conner is "somewhere in rural Georgia." And The Yearling is 1870's-era rural Florida. Not that I can read the latter after seeing the movie, and I had waaay too much of the former in high school American Lit class (being from Atlanta).

And the Susan Cooper series - need to re-read those for this challenge. And if anyone in this group hasn't yet read the Outlander series, now would be a good time to check them out (I really, really liked them).

Hmmm. . . what else?

>16 Carol420: Yes, yes it will. In a good way.

Oh, and knowing your penchant for ghostie-mysteries, I re-read a YA book in 2018 called Court of the Stone Children. It is set in San Francisco and another state (where the heroine moves from with her family). It may be out of print but it has ghosts and mysteries and a daring heroine.

>19 Andrew-theQM: You know, that could be a good way to guide the reading. We have such a variety of readers and you could get a variety of recommendations for each county and state.

Wonder where The Mabinogion would fit?? And certainly Irene Radford's first three books take the reader into various parts of England. And then there's the sections of Wales and England associated with Arthur and Merlin as mentioned in The Crystal Cave.

Note: the Touchstones seem not to be working tonight.

39Andrew-theQM
Editado: Ene 4, 2020, 4:54 pm

>38 leslie.98: The City of London is the historic centre of London and the financial / business district. It is known locally as the city and the square mile, as it only covers 1.12 square miles. This article gives more information on the wards covered as well as a map.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_of_London

Greater London is the rest of London, most books will be set in Greater London. If it covers The Bank of England, St Paul’s Cathedral, the Tower, Temple (figures in code type books), Barbican, the Old Bailey and London Bridge it will be the City of London.

Although "Wildfell Hall" is thought to be based on Ponden Hall known to Anne in West Yorkshire, most agree that Bronte places the location of Wildfell Hall near Scarborough, which is in N. Washington, D.C. and probably Virginia (as >76 BookConcierge: mentions above) for The President is Missing. There is a section that takes place in a cabin in a wooded area, and that sounds more like Arlington, VA, than Washington, D.C.

OK, just re-read the instructions above, and came across Andrew's sentence: "Each book can only be used for one state, county or province."

So, I'll just quietly ask to have the area of Arlington, VA be ignored for "President is Missing" above.

Or as the late Rosanne Rosanna Danna would say, "Never mind!"

>79 threadnsong: I think what Andrew meant was that for the group thread there needs to only be one book per location but you can post as many as you would like for as many locations on your own personal thread. If a book seems to have multiple locations just choose the main one for the group thread but you can list the book for all of them on your person thread if you wish. Does that make sense to you?

✔Indiana - 2015 - All The Bright Places by Jennifer Niven - 416 Pgs.- ★★★★★ - 1/20/2020
Just finished this audio. A heartbreaking love story about 2 fragile and damaged high school kids named Violet and Finch. Niven‘s writing is excellent despite the difficult topic. Narration alternates between Finch and Violet. Very touching and an honest depiction of depression and mental illness. Looking forward to Netflix movie 2/28/20.

No reason why someone else can’t choose that book for another country. I also agree The President is Missing could easily be used for Virginia, at one point I even remember them crossing the bridge over the Potomac into Virginia.

ENGLAND: Kent The Mystery of the Blue Train, Agatha Christie.

Although much of this Poirot mystery takes place in France, a few scenes with major character Miss Katherine Grey are in the fictitious Kent village of St. Mary Mead. This book was written in 1928, 2 years before the debut of a more famous resident of the same village, Miss Jane Marple. In the later books, Christie has the village in made-up counties, but this earliest mention of St. Mary Mead is specifically located in Kent.

Quite a bit of the action takes place in the fictional town of Littlebath, which Trollope based upon Bath (according to Wikipedia).

1932 #Minnesota 4 orphans (Odie Banion, Albert (Odie's brother), Mose, (their friend), Emmy (broken-hearted little girl) on life-changing odyssey during the Great Depression. A big-hearted epic that shows how the American landscape connects us all. Krueger is a master storyteller with beautiful prose. Well-plotted and imaginative with endearing characters. Recommended for adult and YA readers.

Where would I count a book set in Sutherland, Scotland? Is it just lumped into "Highlands"?

The book is Death of a Gossip by M.C. Beaton, and since I see another book by this author in the Highlands spot I will assume that is where it goes until or unless I hear otherwise.

Also, are we still missing a book for Oklahoma, U.S.A.? I have assigned Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry to Oklahoma - the book involves travel through many western U.S. states but does include a section in OK.

I haven't been completely following along, but I just took a quick look at the list at the top. I can finish off the US! It wasn't even that long ago that I read it:

For Oklahoma:
Storm Warning: The Story of a Killer Tornado / Nancy Mathis. 4 stars

D'oh! As I read the post above me, I guess it is already finished. Ah, well, I'll just post this, anyway. :-)

England: Birkenhead (Cheshire or Merseyside?) The Doctor's Family and other Stories, Margaret Oliphant (1861).

These 2 stories and novella are the first installments of Oliphant's Carlingford series. Carlingford is said to be based on Birkenhead, where Oliphant lived for a time. At the time the stories were written, Birkenhead was part of Cheshire; today it is part of Merseyside.

I'll let the judges decide where to put it.

England: Bristol/Clifton: The Misses Mallett by E. H. Young.

Young called the town in her novels Radstowe, but it is based on the Clifton area of greater Bristol. The "bridge" that figures prominently in the book is clearly the Clifton Suspension Bridge. I enjoyed the setting because my grandfather was born in Bristol.

>211 Andrew-theQM: No worries. I've got 3 grandchildren in school in Sheffield and I've heard what they've been through. Each child has taken a turn staying home for a couple of weeks due to a Covid case in their class. And in the case of the eldest in YR 7, it was his bus driver who had it! Oh, and my son (their dad) is student-teaching (not sure what it's called in England--he's observing & assisting?) in secondary school French classes, so they are all a busy group. I can only imagine everything that you must be doing (and not doing!) right now.

>212 kac522: Sheffield is only 30 minutes drive from where my school is. It is thought times for all with Government expectations that schools fully open. But I do feel overall it is the right thing to do for the well being of the children, more so in Primary than Secondary where big issues. Cases in northern England been very high in this second peak. A tough time to learn being a teacher, but if can do it now can do it at any time. Just keep putting one foot in front of each other.

>225 Carol420: I just checked my bookshelves and found a YA for Maeve of Connacht, which would encompass Co. Leitrim in Ireland if that were, at the time, a County. It was not.

So then Wikipedia and the Greater Google got me searching for books set in Co. Leitrim. Unless I want some lovely maps and walking guides, nada. There was one that I can't quite muster ordering this year set in Leitrim, called The Dead Buried by the Dying about the famine years in Co. Leitrim.

*sigh* If only I was a mystery writer, sent to do some research or maybe some historical romance novels, set in each of Ireland's counties . . .
