FAQ
"Hosting a month" means creating the discussion thread and including some explanation, quirky comments, graphics, or suggested books and authors to help participants choose their reading material.

How to create your page: Go to the planning page for the CAT or KIT...for MysteryKIT you will click on 2020 Category Challenge page. Then click Post A New Topic. When that comes up it's your new page. In the subject box you will put the title, such as "January MysteryKIT".

After you have finished with your page it's a good idea to copy the URL and post a message that it is up. Then in the message paste the URL with the note that the CAT or KIT for your month is up. It's just an easy way for people to see the new topic is ready.

yes ma'am and I'd gladly host a month.

3Dejah_Thoris

I’m in - I’ll host a month.

4LadyoftheLodge
Nov 16, 2019, 3:15 pm

I will also host a month. Let's see how many more interested parties we get. Also suggestions of topics?

5Dejah_Thoris
Nov 16, 2019, 3:30 pm

Some ideas:
Amateur detective
Noir/gumshoe
Golden Age
Historical
International authors / in translation
Cross genre /mashup (sff/mystery, romance/mystery, etc.)
Stand alone
Series
New to you authors
Novel to screen

6majkia
Nov 16, 2019, 3:38 pm

We could add pastiche/parody and humorous

7LittleTaiko
Nov 16, 2019, 5:38 pm

I’m interested as well and would happily host a month. What about cozies? Though I guess that is covered by amateur detectives.

Nov 16, 2019, 6:13 pm

I am interested, but I seem to have gone ahead with a couple of other KITs, so this may be spreading myself a bit thin!

9LibraryCin
Nov 16, 2019, 6:15 pm

I found a list of subgenres here (though many are quite specific!), but I kind of like the "Furry Sleuth" option! LOL!
http://cuebon.com/ewriters/Msubgenres.html

A couple of other (broader) ideas:
Police Procedural
Private Investigator

>9 LibraryCin: I love the categories in that link! I am up for Furry Sleuth, and I volunteer to take that one! I also liked the Bumbling Detective, and Culinary (which could be combined with Crafts or lumped in with Cozies).

>6 majkia: Humorous is good too. I don't think we did that last time we had Mysteries.

11Dejah_Thoris
Editado: Nov 17, 2019, 12:18 am

>9 LibraryCin: That's a great sub genre list! I think we should change my suggestion of noir/gumshoe to Hard Boiled, which covers them both and more.

I'd also be in favor of:
Humorous
Police Procedural
Private Investigator
Paranormal/Supernatural

>7 LittleTaiko: And there is definitely some overlap between Amateur Sleuth and Cozies. Either would work.

ETA: It belatedly occurs to me that Paranormal/Supernatural fits into the Cross Genre/mashup category I mentioned earlier.

All these ideas look so good! I hope I can make room each month. The Mystery CAT in 2018 turned me on to all the different sub genres and I've tried to read at least one mystery a month since then. I would be on board for all of the above, but I like some of the new ones as well. I never read the mysteries that feature an animal detective and its about time I do! Is espionage ever considered part of mystery?
If I am not overdone with my other commitments I would be willing to take a month in winter, spring or summer.

Although we already have more than 12. Sigh.

Nov 17, 2019, 12:57 pm

>15 majkia: That's not a terrible problem to have! We could vote, or just let people pick their favorite and host - either way, we'll end up with some great categories.

17LibraryCin
Nov 17, 2019, 12:57 pm

haha! I was going to say, even without espionage, we are already at 14!

18LadyoftheLodge

I think people should just pick their faves and the month they want to host.

I could do Espionage in April. I haven't read a lot in this sub-genre, but have several lined up and am happy to research a list.

>29 LadyoftheLodge: That said, if we don't get more hosts, I'll take a second month. I'd like to give it a bit longer, though, in case more people show an interest.

Perhaps an explanation of what the hosting duties are might motivate newcomers to volunteer.

I must have done it once before, but I don't know how I figured it out. This year I've offered myself up three times and I will surely learn the process. Much thanks!

here's a link to some formatting. https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Formatting

What I found the hardest thing was how to get started. I just open up any wiki, and in the search box to the left, type in 2020 MysteryKIt. It will say there is no such critter, then ask if you want to create one. Say yes.

Then, you can always copy off other wikis if you want to do it the easy way. That will give you the structure, then just erase the books and change the themes and host names.

I'll help if you yell. ;)

I'm willing to take cozies in December. That is probably a broad enough topic without adding amateur detective and sleuth, isn't it? I'm already hosting 3 other CATs/KITs; that doesn't disqualify me, does it? I think a number of members host multiple CATs/KITs.

>49 MissWatson: Thanks, I will add you to the listing.
>50 sallylou61: Thank you! I think cozies is a broad topic that will allow a lot of participation. It seems as if most of us are hosting other CATs or KITs. We will have a busy but fun reading year!

Have we got a thread for July?

60sallylou61
Editado: Jun 19, 2020, 9:44 pm

>59 Robertgreaves: The same person, Dejah_Thoris, is the host for both the July MysteryKIT and the July KITastrophe. I have not found any evidence of either thread being posted yet. I looked on her profile screen and saw the following message:

I love LT, but I'm terrible at the social aspects of it. I'm not on consistently - sometimes I won't visit for months. I'm going to try to track my books for the rest of 2014 and participate a little, but otherwise keep a low profile.

Obviously, this was posted many years ago, but apparently she is still not visiting on a regular basis. I'm not the main hostess for either KIT, and did not want to write to Dejah on her profile screen and mention that she has not yet posted either thread before anyone commented on the missing threads. Who should do this?
If you want me to try contacting her about both threads, I would be glad to do so unless we want LadyoftheLodge and LibraryCin to each do their own KIT.

Jun 19, 2020, 9:49 pm
