Roderick Williams has spent the last three years learning, exploring and performing three song cycles by Franz Schubert: Die schöne Müllerin, Winterreise, and Schwanengesang. During this process he kept a blog detailing the ups and downs of this process, the errors, pitfalls and payoffs. In this programme Roderick Williams journeys into the world of Schubert's youthful song cycle, Die schöne Müllerin. He discusses some of his own teenage experiences as a way of accessing and interpreting this music, how divulging these insights to an audience during a performance aided the experience, and also some of the problems of finding and creating an overall shape to this long cycle of songs.
