Someones breaks into his house and attacks his best friend who was supposed to check up on things at his house while he was away. The ex girlfriend is suspected but it wasnt her. Not The Obsession, I don't think as the premise follows the grown-up daughter of a serial killer.

Could you be thinking of Whiskey Beach? The hero was an author and had been implicated in a murder.

Best friend is Mike, crazy girl is Caryn or something. Mike is attacked in MMC's house, is in coma. Caryn has an alibi.

FMC's dad is in prison for killing her mother, he (the dad) asks the MMC (the writer) to write the story from his side.
