M&S SubGenre Bingo

Editado: Jul 3, 2019, 2:04 am

Over the past few years, we’ve had a monthly challenge involving Mystery/Suspense subgenres. At the end of 2018, we exhausted the list and moved on to other monthly challenges. I’ve prepared this game to encourage us to continue exploring the various subgenres in Mystery/Suspense.

The concept is easy and is the same as other bingo games you may have played except that here we do it with our reading. Read a book that qualifies for a subgenre listed on your card. Get 5 in a row, and get a Bingo. A Bingo can be made horizontally, vertically or diagonally. Although the ultimate goal would be to fill in the entire card so that you read all subgenres listed, you can do however many Bingos you would like. Once you achieve the number of Bingos you want (or have filled your card!), you can create another card and start again. There are enough subgenres listed below that there will be new ones available for future rounds.

Here’s a sample card:

You can use the bingo card provided above (I will put it in my Member Gallery for you to access and here is the image address for it - remember to include the < and > on the ends: img src=https://pics.librarything.com/picsizes/06/d4/06d40b7a121d7a2637456447377434b41716b42.jpg height=”300” width=”275”) OR, if you're feeling particularly adventurous, you can make your own. I've created a list of subgenres for you to use - simply copy and paste it but don't change it (i.e. add spaces).

Instructions to Make Your Own Bingo Card:
1. Go to https://osric.com/bingo-card-generator/
2. Enter the following info:
Card Title: M&S SubGenre Bingo
Word List: Amateur Sleuth,Anti-Hero Thriller,Aristocratic Detective,Bumbling Detective,Caper (Heist),Child in Peril,Woman in Peril,Cozy Mystery,Culinary Mystery,Doctor Detective,Furry Sleuth,Handicapped Detective,Hard-Boiled Mystery,Literary Mystery,Noir,Historical Mystery,Hitman Thriller,Howdunit Mystery,Legal Thriller,Locked Room/Puzzle Mystery,Military Thriller,Psychological Thriller,Forensic Specialist,Futuristic Mystery,Serial Killer,Stalker,Private Detective,Female Detective,Romantic Suspense,1st in a Mystery Series,Supernatural Mystery,Third World Mystery,Whodunit Mystery,Techno-Thriller,Police Procedural,Political Intrigue
Include a Free Space: Yes
Free Space Text: Free Space
Free Space Description: clear this box
Free Space Placement: Center
Number of Squares Wide: 5
Number of Squares Tall: 5
Number of Cards to Create: 1
3. Click "Generate Bingo Cards"

To post the image on LibraryThing:
1. Save the image of the bingo card to your computer (Take a screenshot then edit out the surroundings, or use the Snipping Tool)
2. On your profile, click: "Your Member Gallery"
3. Click "Add Another Picture"
4. Upload your image file (I usually put these files in my Junk Drawer)
5. Right click on the image and select "Copy image address"
6. Create the post with the following text: <img src="image url" width="300" height="275">

Let the game begin!

Happy Reading ♥

PS - Quick note - these boards all seem to come up at whatever size they want (I have NO idea why!) so I just put them in at 300/275 and hope for the best :) I don't know if it has to do with the program they're created in or the system that is used to post them but the size I gave is a guideline. It's one of the bugs that I couldn't work out before setting this up but will continue working on it to see if I can figure it out.

Instructions for updating your card using Photo Editor (you can do a similar update in Paint)

If you do not have your card file saved to your computer, go to your photo gallery, select your card photo, right click, and select save as. Your file should download to your computer. If you already have your file on your computer, you're good to go.

Now, open your jpg/png/bmp file. If you have the option, select Photo Editor (Paint will also work but the instructions will be slightly different)

Click on Edit & Create at the top of the screen and select Edit with Paint 3D

Click on 2D Shapes at the top of the screen, select your shape at the right of the screen

Go to a box in your picture, and holding down the left mouse button, drag the + symbol until you get a shape of the size you want (don't worry about placement yet) and then let up on the mouse

Now, you should have multiple symbols in surrounding the object you just created. (don't click on any of these symbols yet!) This is when you edit your shape for color, thickness, opacity, etc.

Once you have the settings you want, you can grab the shape by clicking and holding the left mouse button and shift it in the box until it's placed how you'd like. After the shape is positioned where you want it to be, you can click on either the "stamp" symbol or the "check mark" symbol.

The "stamp" will allow you to use the same shape that you just created in multiple squares. If you click on the stamp, it will set your shape in the current box and create a secondary image that you can move to another box. With your shape in the new box, click on the stamp and the process is repeated. When you have filled all the boxes that you want to fill, click on the "check mark" and it will set your shape for the last time. If you want to use the same shape each time you update the card, you should use settings you can remember easily (ie 50% opacity)

Now that you've updated your card, go to Menu at the top of the screen and save the file as a Paint 3D file so you can edit it later. Your updated file should be saved in the directory with the rest of your picture files.

At this point, you simply reload your updated file to LibraryThing using the instructions that you used for uploading the initial card.

Alternatives:

1. You can do something as simple as tracking with Xs (I've done it this way a few times). This tracks with my updated card below in >3 bhabeck:
OOOXO
XOOOO
OOXOX
OOOOO
XOXXO

2. Another option is to print out your card, mark it by hand (stamps, stickers, X's, etc) and scan it back into your computer. (If you can't scan - you can take a photo of it with your phone and load that)

Note - I have a PC that I'm doing this on so instructions may be different if you are using a Mac. I have not tried this on my tablet (either the android or the ipad). If anyone does an update with other programs/systems and wants to provide the instructions, I will post them here for future use.
