One of these days I'm going to have to move, so I've been doing my best to get rid of my paper books before the day comes, but, looking back on the year's reading, it seems that I only read seven tree books all year. That wasn't the sum of my reading: my total came to thirty-five or so, but all the rest were Kindle books. I'm addicted to that little device, but my bookshelves are still full and getting more than a bit dusty. Something's gotta change! I gotta get back to my roots! I gotta rediscover print! My house is not a cage for unread books! I paid for these damn objects, so I might as well read 'em!
So, anyway, the best paper book I read this year was Adam Johnson's The Orphan Master's Son, which seemed to show real insight into the world's most impenetrable society. The worst was Andre Dubus III's The Garden of Last Days, which dragged and dragged. It was a galley copy, and therefore technically unsaleable. I took real pleasure in recycling that heavy, joyless doorstop. Next year is a another year. I'll be joining ROOT 2019 and make another go at getting through my ink-and-paper library.

Good luck with it! I've been good at not expanding the paper library too much (we won't think about the ebooks just now!), but less good at reading what's already there.

I'll be joining. I'm looking forward to reading outside the house more often, so maybe that'll help.

Thank you. My paper library hasn't grown either, but I'm deeply addicted to two-dollar Kindle deals. Thank God those don't take up any physical space.
