The Drums of Autumn by Diana Gabaldon, Signed Edition

I received an e-mail today with a link to this new signed title, not sure if anyone here is collecting. The odd thing is that currently you can't find it on the website on your own, it doesn't show up anywhere I've looked or through a search, but this link should take you there:

You can search 3421 on EP and it will come up. This is the case for a lot of books. Certainly it hurts their sales, but it is what it is.

I think they do this intentionally with plans on making it more public later but they forget to go back and include it in the regular searches.

Here is an example: Bookshelf. You can search bookshelf on EP without finding it, but if you know the item number "2860" it is view-able.

Is there a list or a way to discover the item number?

There is no encompassing database. If you tell us what you are seeking, we may be able to help you.

Diana Gaboldon signed books (working on collection for my daughter). I have Outlander, Voyager, and just ordered Drums of Autumn. That leaves 5 others, one of which I think has already been printed and finished it's run, as I have found it on Ebay and Amazon, though not thinking I want to pay 500-900 for it (Dragonfly in Amber I think it was). Thanks in advance.

>5 Xelera: It is possible that EP might produce a second run of some of these, but you'll have to be patient and of course it's not a sure thing. I know they have done at least two runs of Outlander and Written in My Own Hearts Blood.

Thanks for the help. I got in on the second run of Voyager and Outlander I think, and just bought the recent released Drums of Autumn (all signed) and then a signed, first edition of "Seven Stones to Stand or Fall". Still need "Dragonfly in Amber" and "Written in My Own Heart's Blood" but have to wait a few more weeks before I can justify spending the money on those.

About Easton Press books, what is the difference between a signed, and a signed first edition? I understand the second run of Voyager and Outlander, but is it considered a first edition, say, Drums of Autumn, if EP releases their version but the book was already released long ago, in paperback, hardback, etc?

Guessing I should probably learn more before buying some of these, however with limited printing, it's shoot first, ask later, or risk missing altogether (like seeing Dragonfly and Heart's Blood going for $600'ish because they were limited and sold out).

A first edition is the very first time a book is printed in any format (other than some advance reading copies or uncorrected proofs), this would be a first edition first printing. If the publisher wants to print another run, future copies that get printed would be a later printing. If nothing is changed between printings, then they are still technically first editions, but later printings, second third fourth etc. Collectors only want first printings.

As far as the difference between a signed first edition and a signed edition, one is the actual first edition first printing, and the signed edition can be any edition that gets printed at any time that they decide to get signed. Unless EP specifically says they are a first edition, then it most likely is not. You will find many re-sellers on ebay claiming their EP book is a first edition first printing because EP does not specify that the book is not one, so they are taking advantage by saying it is. They know better but are taking advantage of the uneducated buyer.

There is another "type" of first edition as well. Like you said what if the book was originally published in paperback and now it is being published in hardcover. If it is the first hardcover edition, then it would be a First Thus edition, meaning the first printing in a new format or edition. Generally this later edition isn't as desirable. There are exceptions however.

So one more question then... Easton Press released Tolkien's "The Fall of Arthur" awhile back.

Two claims made on the page for the book:

"The never-before-published unfinished work by the immortal fantasy author..."

"The Fall of Arthur is now being released for the first time, complete with never-before-seen notes on Tolkien's direction for finished the work. "

However, the image of the book does not include any reference to First Edition... is this because it is finished by someone other than the author, or is there some other nuance I should be aware of?

And more on topic, now have:
3084 Written In My Own Hearts Blood
3291 Dragonfly in Amber
3331 Outlander
3364 Voyager
3374 Seven Stones to Stand or Fall
3421 The Drums of Autumn

Well, Drums of Autumn is en route, but essentially here. So that completes my set of the Gabaldon books, all signed, until the next one comes out.

And might I add, this hobby is expensive... =)

Thanks for the knowledgeable help!

Houghton Mifflin is the First Edition publisher. EP just reprinted it. So the EP copy could be a First thus edition but they are not the original publisher so it is not the first edition first printing that first edition collectors would want, just collectors of leather.

Yes it does seem to be a shade or two different.
