Cool Bookmarks!

I keep finding marvelous bookmarks! Who else but all of you appreciate???

Not that I collect them or anything, but please post your greatest bookmarks here too!

Here are two:

The first was in the Margaret Forster Hidden Lives that I'm reading now. No idea who I got the book from, but I know the book was at some time in the Rochester NY area as "RG&E" is the old name of the electric company! (For all I know it still is).

This second one is marvelous!

The front is a facsimile of the the gold 'slabs' that Kublai Khan handed out to the favored (in this case Marco Polo) -- you can read about it in the small print on the verso.

I also love the old exchanges! And, of course, Idlewild. Blissfully fine name for an airport.

This one is from Cuba! I found it in a book I was reading from the Wellfleet Public Library on the Cape a couple of years ago. No idea anymore what book it might have been.

I found these two in a set of Dickens handed down from my husband's grandparents:

I think they both date from World War II.

Love the bookmarks! When I get back to work, I'll have to see what is in the stash there I've pulled out of donated books.

Great thread! I have my core group of goto marks that I always use. I'll have to see if I have some pictures of them and add them to the list.

Okay its been a bit, but I finally got back to it. Here's some of my favorite marks.

This one is one of my son's. It's aluminum and was made at Wendell August Forge in Western PA.

These are my primary ones. One the left is one that was made by my wife. The picture is one of mine, taken of a sculpture by an artist in Ojai CA, all the embellishments are hers. On the right is a origami dollar bill that I made.

And finally, my "emergency" bookmark. Its a beer label that I found in a book that weird_O gave me last Christmas.

These are great! I love the "found" things that become bookmarks. The aluminum one is gorgeous.

12 - I haven't posted here yet but have been enjoying this new thread you started. I will find a few of my faves and post them (I have *tons* of bookmarks).

Don't know if you are familiar with Bookcrossing.com. I am a member there too and once started what we call a bookray: the owner of a book asks on the threads if anyone else is interested, then assembles a list of those who reply. I then set up a more or less geographically sensible list and send it to the first person, who reads, then sends it to the next, and so on. Each person who *journals* the book is basically reviewing it and each person subsequently is able to see all the previous journal entries. A bookray does not have to wind up back *home* with the original owner; when that happens, it's called a bookring.

Why am I blathering on about this, you ask? One of my favourite and most successful bookrings was for a book called Forgotten Bookmarks by Michael Popek. The book itself was fun but the comments of all who read it after me were great. Also, I created an envelope at the back of the book before sending it out, and inserted a few bookmarks, inviting people to take a few or leave a few as the book travelled. If you want a peek at the journey of this book, here it is:

The bookray sounds wonderful. I look forward to seeing your bookmarks. I'm going to have to look for Forgotten Bookmarks. I think I remember hearing about it. I've found some poignant things, postcards and bus tickets from long long ago.

2 bookmarks: the one on the left is from the Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild. It is made to look like a leather spine of a book cover. The flip side of it looks like the pages when a book is closed. It's very lovely.

The bookmark on the right is from an organization called Your True Nature. They are an environmental and educational website and they create bookmarks, posters, among other things. When I was still teaching, they sent me a ton of curriculum materials for my students. I also order a wall calendar from them some years. Their most popular theme is the *Advice From* and they often invite input from the public. In case you can't read it from this pic, this one is Advice From a River and says:

Go With the Flow
Slow Down and Meander
Go Around Obstacles
Stay Current
The Beauty is in the Journey

I love how they play with the language. The website is YourTrueNature.com

I never thought of collecting bookmarks, but I'm following this thread and read the whole bookcrossing thread from >13 jessibud2:. Told the story to a friend yesterday who was feeling low. She gave me a big hug, cried a little and said "sometimes the internet is so wonderful, this made my day so much better!". >13 jessibud2: Thank you so much for sharing this here!

2 more of my faves:

These 2 bookmarks are made of different materials. The one from the Toronto Zoo is actually made from what they lovingly refer to as Zoo Poo, in this case, panda poo incorporated into recycled paper. The commercial name is PooPooPaper. And no, it doesn't smell at all. :-) The other bookmark was brought to me as a gift when my friend was in Egypt and is made from some kind of linen fabric. It shows the hieroglyphic alphabet.

Last 2 from me.

These 2 bookmarks are from favourite book stores. The one on the left is from the very beautiful and elegant Ben McNally store, one of only a few remaining independent bookstores left in this city. I love the picture on the top. The one on the right is from Book City, a shop that sells both new and used books. It's probably too small to read here but the *story* on the back of this bookmark is titled *Technological Breakthrough* and is subtitled *Introducing the new Bio-Optic Organized Knowledge device - BOOK. It's quite funny.

What a wonderful thread! I sort of collect bookmarks; it's probably more accurate to say that I acquire them in great numbers. I think they feed my fantasy of spending even more hours of my life reading than I am currently able to spend.

Among my favorites are bookmarks from Persephone Books in London. Each of their publications is accompanied by a high-quality (heavy card stock) bookmark with a pattern matching that of the book's endpaper. The patterns are often drawn from old fabrics or wallpaper or other patterns from the time of the book's original publication. I recently ordered the entire collection of 130 bookmarks from Persephone and I can't wait to receive them. When I do, I'll take a couple of photos and post them here.

AMAZING! How do you ever decide what to use???? I have a couple of those.

Do they say on the back what book they are associated with?

43EBT1002
Ene 4, 2019, 12:15 am

>42 sibylline: Honestly, I have a difficult time choosing a bookmark, Lucy. It's not only the Persephone bookmarks that contribute to the difficulty. I just sort of choose one that speaks to me in the moment. I do have favorites that I go back to more often than others.

And yes, on the back of the bookmark it names the book it's associated with along with a quote or some other relevant bit of information.

This weekend I'll take a few more photos of my collection. :-)

Hey all, I just found some really awesome bookmarks for sale, and I wanted to share them with y'all! I hope posting links here is okay? I can't figure out how to just post pictures.

My 10 year old granddaughter made this bookmark for my birthday last May:

She said she made it because she knew I loved Jane Austen. I took a picture of it next to Cassandra's portrait of JA that's in my Belknap edition of Northanger Abbey.

>51 kac522: - Wow, Kathy, that's lovely. Our public library has a contest every year for kids to create bookmarks. The winners are then printed on good quality paper and are free for patrons to take. The name, age and school of the creators are printed on the backs. I love the idea. Bookmarks are an easy in to creativity for kids and how proud they must feel to know that they are getting out to so many people!

Thanks, everybody. I was just amazed myself. She did the watercolor on thin paper, so I used a plastic sleeve from another bookmark I had and it fit. So now I can use it everyday.

Shelley, that is such a cool idea! Think an American kid born in Italy who lives in the U.K. can sneak in an entry to a Canadian contest?😁

>55 Caroline_McElwee: - Thanks, Caroline. I agree.
>56 kac522: - It wouldn't surprise me, Kathy. We are a country of immigrants so kids come from anywhere and everywhere. But the contest might be limited to kids who hold a TPL (Toronto Public Library) card. ;-) If I can find a few among my stash tomorrow I will post a few here for all to see. Your granddaughter's talent is remarkable, by the way. She could be doing book covers, at this rate (I may have mentioned a time or two, this trend I've noticed of book covers showing people from behind. Anyone else notice this?)

Editado: Sep 4, 2020, 10:18 pm
