I'm voting for the Hugo Awards for the first time. The finalists for Best Graphic Story are:

Bitch Planet, Volume 2: President Bitch, written by Kelly Sue DeConnick, illustrated by Valentine De Landro and Taki Soma, colored by Kelly Fitzpatrick, lettered by Clayton Cowles (Image Comics)

Black Bolt, Vol. 1: Hard Time, written by Saladin Ahmed, illustrated by Christian Ward, lettered by Clayton Cowles (Marvel)

Monstress, Volume 2: The Blood, written by Marjorie M. Liu, illustrated by Sana Takeda (Image Comics)

My Favorite Thing is Monsters, written and illustrated by Emil Ferris (Fantagraphics)

Paper Girls, Volume 3, written by Brian K. Vaughan, illustrated by Cliff Chiang, colored by Matthew Wilson, lettered by Jared Fletcher (Image Comics)

Saga, Volume 7, written by Brian K. Vaughan, illustrated by Fiona Staples (Image Comics)

Not yet having read Black Bolt, I'm probably voting for Bitch Planet. My reasoning: It's a solid, thrilling, politically relevant, purely science-fictional story.

Monstress is gorgeous, but fantasy (I know lots of Hugos have gone to fantasy books, but my bias for Hugos is toward sf). My Favorite Thing is a stunning, sui generis, tour de force fantasy, and will win lots of comics awards. Saga (and Monstress) have already won Hugos, and I like awards to go to someone new. Paper Girls is great fun, but the story is pretty disjointed so far (time travel paradoxes hurt my brain anyway).

Anyone else here voting, or have opinions on the nominees?

Thanks for this thread. I don't follow any of those series so they're all new titles to me: interesting that so many nominees are part of a series (and not the first installment, either). I've read some Vaughan before, nothing from any of the other writers (and don't recognise names among those here for lettering or illustrating). I'll use this list as a "let's look for something new" and your descriptions of Bitch Planet, Monstress, and My Favorite Thing are especially motivating.

>2 elenchus: If you had never read Saga, check at least the first volume (and see if you can stop) - it is one of the best Science Fiction series that had come out lately - even if the story sound almost trivial, it actually works. And Staples style complement Vaughan's very well.

>1 edgewood: If I decide to vote, I will either go for Black Bolt or for Saga as #1 (still had not decided which one I am putting first, the other will be second) and still had not decided which ones of the rest of the list will be above the line.
