In three weeks my dh and I will be heading for Chicago to visit our grandbaby, but also to check out parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and eastern Ohio before returning home through WV.

Our planned route will take us from Chicago through Minnesota (to see the lovely lakes) to St Cloud, over to Marquette, through Sault St Marie (to see the lovely locks), down to eastern Ohio, passing by Pittsburgh and then WV, VA, etc. Neither of us has been to either Michigan or Wisconsin, and have only seen a little of Minnesota.

I'm searching for used book stores on the way through Local, but if anyone is interested in meeting for a cup of coffee, let me know.

In Chicago, do not miss Powell’s on 57th St: https://www.librarything.com/venue/354/Powells-Hyde-Park

While you are in the neighborhood, you should also go to Seminary Co-op: https://www.librarything.com/venue/20/Seminary-Co-op-Bookstore It’s new books (though there are a couple of shelves of used books and clearance books), but it’s well worth going to, as it’s the best academic bookstore in the world. (There is also a nice little coffee shop in the building, Plein Air.)

The Dial is a lovely (literally, it’s beautiful) little shop with both new and used books. It’s also on the second floor of the Fine Arts Building, so you have to use the operator-run elevator, one of the last in Chicago.

Should your route take you through Chesterton, Indiana, visit O’Gara and Wilson, which used to be down the street from Powell’s, but moved. It’s still great, though.

If either of you enjoy genre fiction and are driving through the twin cities, I used to love Uncle Edgar's, a used mystery book shop. It is located in the back rooms of Uncle Hugo's used science fiction bookstore. Haven't been in years, though.

>2 lilithcat: thanks for the tips! We'll need to work the Chicago locations around our granddaughter's schedule. I will try to get to at least one of your suggestions.

>3 ELiz_M: noted! We did stop in twin cities a couple years ago but didn't check out Uncle Edgar's. I'm making a note of it. There's a fantastic model shop in St. Paul that is our "must do!" return this time around, as on our previous visit to the area we were on a very strict budget. My dh was enthralled at the aisles stcked with model railroad supplies.

>4 MarthaJeanne: thank you!

>5 fuzzi: That model train shop wouldn't be Bob's on Marshall Ave. in St. Paul would it? If so, stop by Izzy's for an ice cream when you're done there. (It's the Izzys closest to my Mum's house and I make her take me there at least once on my visits home).

>6 ELiz_M: no, it's Scale Model Supply on Lexington Pkwy. They are literally floor to ceiling in model supplies, of all types. Their "N" scale train items are more comprehensive than any other place we've been.

I'd love to check out Izzy's, though.
