Dear all,
it is with sadness that I report to the Chapel that Mel Gordon died on March 22nd.
Members might own his survey of Wiemar decadence 'Voluptuous Panic'(and if not, why not?) or his similar overview of French eroticism 'Horizontal Collaboration'(ditto).
I came into contact with him via my interest in Anita Berber and he kindly wrote a piece for my volume 'Dances of Vice Horror and Ecstasy' (the first full translation of Berber and Drostes wonderful decadent Gesamtkunstwerk).
We then stayed in touch, and whenever I visited San Francisco to visit family, my wife and I would go for drinks and/or a meal with him. And what conversations! Mel seemed to know, and have an opinion, on any subject worth talking about and I would always leave him having my mind both blown and enriched by what I had learned. I imagine that must have pretty much been the same for anyone else who came into contact with him.
How else would we have known the location of, and subsequently made a field trip to, the site of a small hamlet that was the h/q of a fascist love cult of the 1950s a short drive from San Francisco? Who else would have realized a tiny (ten second?) clip of a nude figure drifting in a grey cinematic haze across the screen was actually Anita Berber? He was a researcher par excellence and excavated/saved the most obscure/eclectic items which was housed in a huge rambling residence looking towards San Francisco crammed with 'stuff', the type of collections we can probably only ever aspire to as it was all wonderful, as was he.
I will miss him.

I am sorry to hear he has died. I have and have enjoyed several of his books - as luridly satisfying as their titles (a rare thing).
