What Is to Be Done?

I just read (the important bits of) Chernyshevsky’s famous novel, and wrote about it here:

I know it's not much read these days, in Russian or English, but I wondered if anyone else had thoughts about it.

I read an English version over three decades ago and can't remember a thing about it unfortunately. I think it might have been a truncated version. I'm honestly not sure whether I think it's worth seeking out either than or a better version and reading it, because it gets such bad press....

I recently read the Michael Katz translation from 1989. As a narrative this is a terrible book but as a historical document I found it fascinating. Definitely one of those titles where reading the prologue (something I almost never do because most of the time the prologue is useless drivel) really helped. I even enjoyed the footnotes :D I will say you do have to know some things about the Russian revolutionary movement between the Decembrists and the Bolsheviks or this makes even less sense. Will I ever re-read it, probably not no but I am glad I did read it (even if by read sometimes I mean skimmed).
