Hello, fellow readers and ROOTers! I am back for another year.
This time, I'm keeping my usual goal of 100 roots by the end of the year. I'm also going to keep my secondary goal from last year of also reading some books that I've had on the TBR shelves since I joined LT in 2007, but I'm cutting the goal for that from 10 down to 5. Basically, I just want to make a point of not forgetting to keep making my way through those deep-rooted tomes.
So, the tickers:
I'm also hoping to do in 2018 what I did in 2017, and end the year with fewer books on the TBR shelves than I'm starting it with. The two-out/one-in system I adopted partway through last year seems to be really helping with that, so I'm going to keep at it. Wish me luck!
And I wish all the rest of you luck as well, of course. Happy New Year, and happy reading!

And, WTF? A minute ago, they looked different, but I just hit refresh and now they're the same. OK, I'll see if I can fix them. Thanks for letting me know!

Hi, nice to see you again, and thanks for the reminder about the deep roots!
14rabbitprincess
>13 bragan: I received this as a Christmas present several Christmases ago and embarrassingly have not read it yet.
15bragan
>14 rabbitprincess: I got it shortly after it came out, and can't believe it took me this long to get to it. We've had a whole Doctor come and go since then!
16rabbitprincess
>15 bragan: *sobs*
As excited as I am about Jodie, I'm a wreck over Peter leaving. I watched the Christmas special on Boxing Day and was weeping periodically for the rest of the day.

>22 connie53: Thanks. I had that problem with my touchstone for it on the Club Read group, too, but I forgot to come back here and check this one after I corrected that one. I swear, the touchstones are being especially annoying for me so far this year! Anyway, fixing it now...
24connie53
>23 bragan: LOL. The touchstone is working now! It just caught my attention because I'm interested in all books by Emma Donoghue and this was a title I did not know.
26bragan
>24 connie53: Well, I'm glad you caught it, anyway. And Astray -- making sure the touchstone is right this time -- turned out to be quite worth while, I think, despite me not being too sure about it at first.

>60 bragan: that sounds like a nice read, and I liked your explanation of the benefits of reading a YA either as a child or an adult. I loved some of the YA stuff my daughter pressed me to read when she was a young teenager - now that she's an impoverished young professional her book buying is restricted, but she hasn't abandoned YA fiction - for Christmas she asked for La Belle Sauvage and I'm looking forward to borrowing it!
62bragan
>61 floremolla: I've been reading a fair bit of YA, off and on lately. Although most of it is aimed more at kids in their late teens, whereas The Girl Who Drank the Moon also feels right for preteens, if they're good readers (although less right for the small kids). I tend to find that the teen books are a bit love it or hate it for me, but the good ones really impress me. And there is something about reading the kind of books I myself might have read and loved at as a youngster that can bring back the magic of childhood for me in a really pleasant way.

Mind you, it looks like I'm going to be starting April with a little run of non-ROOTS, but since I'm fairly well on track for those, too, I'm not going to be too concerned about it.

Kind of a slow month for me, really. For some reason everything seemed to take longer to read than I expected it to. But I'm still on track for my ROOTs goal, and I'm very close to the "deep ROOTs" secondary goal. So that's nice.
But it's that last number that's really impressive. Forty books less on my TBR pile than at the beginning of the year! Forty! I never would have thought it.

I keep thinking I must have made a mistake somewhere, but nope! It really is forty books. :)

Just got back from a short trip to visit my mom, and I finished two ROOTs while I was gone:
71. The Drawing of the Three by Stephen King.
And that was one of my "deep ROOTS," meaning that my goal of reading five of those this year has been reached. Yay!
72. Get Shorty by Elmore Leonard.
This would seem like good progress, if my mother hadn't also given me kind of a lot of free books while I was there. Oops. :)

Congrats on the deep ROOTs. And as for the newly acquired ones: well, accidents do happen.

Hurray for finishing the deep ROOTS! Also, you can never have too many books to choose from ;)

>159 rabbitprincess: If it is possible, I think I have managed it. But my mother kept saying, "But they're free books! You can't turn down free books. That's just wrong." And I could not argue with her. At all. :)

So, my report for September:
SEPTEMBER 2018
Books read: 11
Books acquired: 23
ROOT books read: 9
ROOT books YTD total: 74/100
"Deep ROOTs" read: 1
"Deep ROOTs" YTD total: 5/5

Well, I was doing really, fantastically well on whittling down the TBR shelves by using the one-in/two-out system. And then I went to visit my mother, who waved at her bookshelves and said, idly, "You want any of these? You can have anything you want from these shelves; I'm not going to re-read them."
I went home with so many books that I had to check an extra bag. (Good thing I was flying Southwest! I think they're the only ones left who don't charge you for that.)
I then exploited a loophole in the one-in/two-out system that says books that are gifts don't count. I even made her explicitly say "These are a gift." But I know I'm not really fooling anyone, least of all me. Ah, well. Despite that, the TBR is still down quite a bit from the beginning of the year.
ROOT-wise, I'm almost on track, but I keep coming in just the slightest hair shy of where I should be. Theoretically, I should have 75 books by now, and I'm at 74. Close enough, right? And I did already meet my secondary goal of reading five of the "deep roots" before the end of the year.

>163 bragan: I 100% endorse the exploiting of loopholes in the 2-for-1 system :D I don't count freebies, so anything from Project Gutenberg helps me rather than hinders me.
167bragan
>166 rabbitprincess: I do count some freebies. I count Early Reviewer books, because, well, the reason I get those is because I asked for them, so it's on me. But, hey, did I ask for the contents of my mother's bookshelves? I did not. :)

OCTOBER 2018
Books read: 10
Books acquired: 7
ROOT books read: 7
ROOT books YTD total: 81/100
"Deep ROOTs" read: 0
"Deep ROOTs" YTD total: 5/5
Current TBR total: 926
TBR change from the beginning of the year: -31
ROOT total is still slightly below where it theoretically should be, but reaching the goal in the next couple of months should still be totally doable. Especially as I have some time off in the next week or so. I think I may need to indulge in an all-day read-in somewhere in there.

And with that... I did it! Yay! That is my ROOT goal for the year reached!
I've got a couple of non-ROOTs lined up to read next, so I'm dubious about reading any more qualifying books before the year is over, but it's not impossible. Even if I don't, though, I will bask in the feeling of accomplishment for another year. :)

And, OK, that's it for my reading in 2018! Let's see how December has left me:
DECEMBER 2018
Books read: 10
Books acquired: 18
ROOT books read: 9
ROOT books YTD total: 100/100
"Deep ROOTs" read: 0
"Deep ROOTs" YTD total: 5/5
Current TBR total: 923
TBR change from the beginning of the year: -34
So, I didn't exceed my ROOT goals this year, but I did meet them, which is good enough for me. And even though December brought a not-unexpected influx of books (between Christmas gifts, SantaThing and some end-of-the-year splurging), the one-in/two-out system is still working amazingly well, as even with me shamelessly abusing the "gift books don't count" loophole, the TBR is still down thirty-plus books from the beginning of the year. Now, if I can just keep this up, it'll be down to nothing in, um... about twenty-seven years? Well, hey, I'm only 47, so that's maybe doable. Not that I want to eliminate it completely. You have to have some books to choose from!
Anyway. I see the 2019 group is up and running, so I'll trundle along there soon and set up my new thread for the new year. I will see you guys there. And, until then, have a very, very happy New Year!
