Welcome all to the 2018 ColorCAT challenge. My assumption is that this challenge would focus primarily on a color included in the title of a book or refer to the color of the cover. Does anyone have any other interpretations?
If you are interested in hosting a month, please let me know which month you would like and which color you choose.
Hosts:
January/Black - luvamystery65
February/Brown - whitewavedarling
March/Green - DeltaQueen50
April/Yellow - VivienneR
May/Blue - RidgewayGirl
June/Purple - sallylou61
July/Pink - clue
August/Grey - LittleTaiko
September/Metallic - VioletBramble
October/Orange - virginiahomeschooler
November/Red - MissWatson
December/White - Chrischi_HH

>1 LittleTaiko: I think your assumption is right, with the option of opening up colors to related images--so, blue might lead to folks reading books with 'sky' or 'ocean' in the title, and 'red' could lead to something like blood or roses.
Do we need to discuss the 12 colors? I don't know if folks were thinking of including black and white or not, since those are colors and not colors...
I know the basics would be: Green, Orange, Purple, Red, Yellow, Blue... which is six. Beyond that? Pink? Black and white? Gray and brown? And/or...?
(Admittedly, I may be letting my mind veer off into this tangent because I want to host a month, but don't really care much about which month/color since it will be a discovery process no matter what for me!)
What are others thinking?

>2 whitewavedarling: hmm, I hadn't really thought about how hard it might be to get to 12 distinct colors without adding in like teal or magenta (which could be hard to differentiate from blue, green, pink...). What about silver / gold as an option?
I like the idea of the host selecting their color of choice.

I just looked up the top 10 favorite colors (according to one website) and they are blue, red, green, purple, black, orange, yellow, gold, white, and pink. Maybe we could start with those and then add in gray, silver, or brown to get to 12.
6whitewavedarling
>5 LittleTaiko:, How about going with that list of 10, but taking >4 luvamystery65:'s suggestion about doing a metallic month? Gold and silver could go together then, and then colors 11 & 12 would be gray and brown?
7LittleTaiko
Great idea! I'll add that in to the top post so everyone know which colors to choose from.
8luvamystery65
I'll take the color Black in January
9DeltaQueen50
Are we only going by the color on the cover of the book or can we open it up to include the color being mentioned in the title or the author's name. So if Black is the color of the month then you could read a book with a black cover or the author's name is Black or black is mentioned in the title as in The Crime At Black Dudley.
10DeltaQueen50
I'll volunteer for Green in the month of March.
11LittleTaiko
>9 DeltaQueen50: - It can also be color in the title or author's name. Or as mentioned above it could have the option of opening up colors to related images--so, blue might lead to folks reading books with 'sky' or 'ocean' in the title, and 'red' could lead to something like blood or roses.

>9 DeltaQueen50: >11 LittleTaiko: My thinking is that we can be as creative as we want to be in connecting the color to the book. The color could be in the title, author's name, protagonist's name, somewhere on the cover...and I'd imagine that synonyms would count (so "red" could also include crimson, scarlet, ruby, maroon, etc.).
13virginiahomeschooler
If like to volunteer for Orange in October.
14luvamystery65
>9 DeltaQueen50: I plan on reading books with black covers and black in the title. I think the more flexible the better.
I have a few books with colored edges as well. It might be fun to slot them in this challenge.

This is going to be fun. I'm hoping this will help me choose books from my oversized tbr.
May I have blue, please? In May or June?

>12 christina_reads: - Absolutely! it can be as restrictive or as flexible as each person wants to make it.
The list has been updated with requests thus far. I'll be happy to switch a color with anyone who wants it as long as I don't end up with pink. :)

I would be happy to host Red in November.
18DeltaQueen50
This is going to be a fun one. I'm excited about the number of books I will be able to clear from my shelves!
20whitewavedarling
I'm glad to do Brown in February or September!
21sallylou61
I would like to do purple in June.
22Chrischi_HH
I can do white in December. :)
24VivienneR
>23 majkia: Ha! We don't hang about! We'll soon be halfway through our 2018 books!
25LibraryCin
I am not planning to host a month/colour for this one, but I just want to follow along with the discussion. I like that it's opening up to more than just the colour of the book cover.
27virginiahomeschooler
I have a question. I know we're talking about expanding the colors from just the color of the cover. How do you guys feel about the Orange Prize? Is that too far outside the scope?
28VivienneR
>27 virginiahomeschooler: I was hoping the Orange Prize would be an obvious choice! And maybe even the Bailey's prize too (formerly Orange).
29rabbitprincess
WOW, you guys are fast! :D This is going to be an interesting challenge!
30LittleTaiko
Very impressive indeed! We just need one more host to round out the year. If anyone is interested in hosting September/Metallic colors (silver/gold), please speak up.
31LittleTaiko
>27 virginiahomeschooler: - I think that would be a great way to do the Orange month if that is what you are interested in.
32VioletBramble
I'll take September/Metallic.
33LittleTaiko
We are all set for 2018! Thank you all for your input and for volunteering to host a month. I have a message out to majkia to see if she can create the wiki for this challenge. Once we have that we are good to go.
I was scanning my shelves last night to see what might fit for each month. So much to choose from - this will be fun!

So far I've managed to dig out books that will work for 6 of the 12 months (5 are either titles or author names, and just 1 is cover colour). This is the CAT I'm most likely to participate in, I'm looking forward to going through my shelves to see if I can find some more suitable covers.
38EBT1002
I'm planning to play along with this one. It just strikes me as pure fun and it seems like it would be pretty easy to find a book that "works" each month.
39Berly
I am trying to read more books off my shelf and this seems like a fun way to do it. Count me it!
40mysterymax
I may finally get around to reading those John D MacDonald books sitting on the shelf.
41majkia
>40 mysterymax: Good idea!
