Did anyone else receive Holmesian gifts for the holidays? I was given a copy of Vincent Starrett's The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes. Lauded as it is, I'm not certain I'd heard of it. A lovely find, I think, from a dear friend, gifted in such matters. (So to speak!)

Belated and not-so-belated greetings to you all!

I'll tell you what I'd love to receive - the complete set of Jeremy Brett DVD's. I saw it in Best Buy and nearly drooled on the display. It's over $200 - still worth it! Sadly I'm too broke to treat myself.

my wife and i just finished going through all of the Brett series on tape (some of which were in rather shabby condition), and saying how we need them on disc. alas, we too are a bit skint at the moment, but i did find them for about $120 used on Amazon.

and Eurydice, the Starrett book is excellent, and certainly a must have for any Holmes bookshelf!

and now i'm off to "make a long arm".

Understandably! I've not seen them in a long time, but I quite understand drooling. Best wishes on getting them sometime!!! :)

Enodia, about the book: I'm delighted to hear it - though not surprised. It does look it. :)

Hopefully you and your wife will also enjoy a birthday, anniversary, holiday, or happy-moment-of-indulgence disc receipt!

At the risk at provoking a riot, my darling future wife gave me a complete set of Brett DVDs for Christmas, while my future parents-in-law compounded the coup with a new pipe and a copy of the Collected Letters of Arthur Conan Doyle.

Oh, my goodness, kindermord! You've hit the right family. A loving and considerable gift, well-composed, is splendidly affirmative, not to say fun!

But I do not feel envy. :) I was sent my book as one in sixteen, pointed to my interests, by someone else who loves me. And a fiancee gets first dibs on anything trumping that! Congratulations on the Sherlockian coup. Enjoy it! Best wishes on your marriage to come!

I have a question for you British friends. I have been given a marvelous Harrods' Christmas pudding, which I did not consume yet because on Christmas day there were only two of us: my significant other and myself. It will be savoured on New Year's Day. Going back to topic, my question is: how long do you have to let it simmer or be steamed? Last time I ate one was soooo long ago that I forgot.
Sorry for being so totally out of theme (I know, it has nothing to do with our beloved Sherlock, except the fact that, I am sure, he ate it too), and thanks a lot for illuminating me on the matter!
:-))

P.S. And, by the way, best wishes for a splendid 2008 to all.

And to you!

I'm not British, of course, but I think half an hour or so, depending on the size of the pudding. Does that (- I bow in the direction of Those Who Know - ) sound right?

We wanted a Christmas pudding this year, but failed to procure one in time. :( I, for one, never mind a digression that's food-inspired.

yeah, i think half an hour should just about do it. i believe the fork test should be the "proof of the pudding", so to speak... you know, if it comes out clean.

and really this is not so off-topic, as there was an episode of the old Sheldon Reynolds series from the fifties (with Ronald Howard, son of Leslie, as Holmes) called 'The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding'.
at least that's my story, and i'm sticking to it!
