The 70's Wonder Woman TV series was an statement of her relevance in those troubled years. The character slowly faded until an update by George Perez and a brand new interpretation by Mark Waid and Alex Ross in Kingdom Come.

Will the new blockbuster return Wonder Woman to her place as prime symbol of Female Empowerment?

quite possibly! Disney has started to move its princesses into heroines (instead of damsels in distress), i think wonder woman helps to push that trend even further (i know it's not a Disney film, but i feel the Mouse has had incredible influence on image, etc). if this film does well (and i imagine justice league regardless of its quality will also make lots of money), there will certainly be another. then who knows maybe we get a black widow film, etc. hopefully hollywood learns that there's a market out there for female led films. i think Gal Gadot will certainly become a global symbol/brand for empowerment - i imagine she'll be incredibly tied to this role for the rest of her life, kind of like Christopher Reeve will always be Superman.

i remember watching the show from the 70s, but never got into her comics, looking forward to seeing the movie later this week.

This Wonder Woman movie is great, and I think Gal Gadot (who plays her) has a movie franchise if she wants it. She nails it.

I know my wife and many others embrace Wonder Woman as a symbol of female empowerment, so I think it's likely this successful movie will cause even more to feel that way.

>3 jnwelch: I think it wasn't just Gal either. If Gadot had been starring in it, but for example, Joss Whedon who at one point was supposed to direct it had, it would have been an entirely different movie. So very different. Gal was awesome, and not just on the screen, but on the press tour as well, but I also personally think that Patty Jenkins should get all the awards this award season for making this amazing movie that has resonated with so many women in a way that doesn't denigrate men, but holds up women in a way that hasn't really been seen in movies recently. (Or at all?)

And it wasn't just Gal either. The fact that to make this Amazon tribe they got real women, a rainbow of amazing women, who could actually lift things, and weren't no hipped wonders with no arm muscles at all where, you look at them and are like 'yeah, no, those aren't amazons, those are actresses'. These women were Amazons!!

I hope this is a resurgence for Wonder Woman. The comics have taken an uptake leading up to and after the movie. DC is also trying to hit cross platforms with their DC Icons series of books. Wonder Woman: Warbringer by Leigh Bardugo is out later this month and I'm really looking forward to that!
