Where are you in Fantasyland, June 2017

Still reading The Guns of Empire.

Currently reading Firebrand. It caught my eye with the combo of mannerpunk petticoats and steampunk airships, but I'm finding it swings a little too far into the romance spectrum for my tastes. There's some pretty cool worldbuilding, and a likeable heroine, but it feels like it barely goes two paragraphs at a time without some mention of the love interest's broad shoulders or trim waist or general desireability.

I'm 90% of the way through Rogues currently following Patrick Rothfuss's Bast around with George R.R. Martin's "Rogue Prince" Daemon Targaryen to finish up the book.

I've just been visiting the City of miracles and am now travelling with This census-taker in an unnamed land.

Exploring a weird London with Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell.

I just finished reading about how the War for the Known World ends with The Hollow Queen. Not quite sure what I want to start next. So many options.

Looks like I'm heading North with The Golden Compass.

Paying a visit to 10th/11th century not!China in River of Stars.

Trying to survive in a convent with Red Sister.

I'm nearing the end of The Lies of Locke Lamora, which has taken me a long time.

Just finished Lord of Shadows by Cassandra Clare. I found it somewhat more tedious than previous books in the Shadowhunter world and I really did not appreciate the way the book ended with everything in total chaos. Usually, there is some sort of resolution to the book's main issue even if there are more longstanding issues that continue and provide continuity from book to book in the series.

Next up, is revisiting Elizabeth Moon's Paksennarrion trilogy and then on to the more recent work Oath of Fealty. It has been quite a while since I first read this saga but I remember being totally wrapped up in t.

Finished The Guns of Empire by Django Wexler. Urgh! I have to wait until January to find out what happens next.

Just finished The War for the Oaks, which I liked a lot.

Just finished Dragon Heart by Cecelia Holland. Quite good, esp. one character who cannot be understood by any of the human characters due to a curse (she hears herself speaking, they hear only animalistic sounds), but can talk with the dragon of the title. Holland's bibliography is interesting: I think mostly of the very good historical novels; but then there are some good fantasies, and the noteworthy & original SF, Floating Worlds. What they have in common is interesting, well-realized characters, and plot/worldbuilding without easy answers.

Started The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction March/April 2017. Enjoyed the first story muchly.

Time to see how the world ends with The Last Star.

I've landed back on the Disc and am following a young witch named Tiffany and The Wee Free Men.

In honor of Harry Potter's 20th anniversary I'm pausing my current book and taking a detour to Hogwarts for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone :)

Finished The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction March/April 2017. Enjoyed it overall.

Having a second try at ticking off the steampunk square on my r/fantasy bingo.

This time, it's "The Bullet-Catcher's Daughter", by Rod Duncan (touchstones don't seem to be working for me today) and the locale is, not surprisingly, an alt-Victorian England. I'm still early in the story, but it's definitely planted more solidly in the steampunk genre than my other recent "steampunk" read was, and the setup is engaging so far. I love stories with a mystery or detective angle, and the thread of the protagonist having a circus/gypsy-type background and using those skills in her line of work is a nice point of origin that's got my attention.
