42. Val McDermid - The Mermaids Singing
This is the first time I've read something by Val McDermid. It's number one in the series about Tony Hill and Carol Jordan, who try to catch a serial killer.
There were gruesome parts in the book that made me shiver. The author seems to write in an intelligent way and I'll continue this series.

Dopper is adorable. It's such fun raising baby animals and kitties aren't even that much work.
72PaulCranswick
Chapeau to Dopper and especially to Tom Dumoulin, Diana. Fantastic performance so far in the Giro and I loved the joy on his face yesterday when he mastered Quintana. I hope he has more luck than Kruijswijk had last year.

So glad that Dumoulin won the Giro, I knew that he would overturn the deficit he had on Quintana as he is a far better time trialist and as long as the time gap wasn't too large he would do it.
90DianaNL
>89 johnsimpson: Well John, I wasn't so sure about it, the time trial was nerve-racking. Fortunately, we can relax now with Roland Garros. ;-)
91Berly
>90 DianaNL: Dopper looks so cute--I am sure you will have fun with him. And did you say Roland Garros? Yay!!
92magicians_nephew
question from an idjit American - does Dopper mean something in Dutch?
93johnsimpson
Hi Diana, everything is building up sports wise, Roland Garros for another ten days, the Champions league final on Saturday in Cardiff and then we have Queen's Club to look forward to and then Wimbledon. Here in the UK the Champions League 50 over Cricket competition starts tomorrow along with the regular Cricket season moving along.
I was very pleased for friends we visited last Thursday who are Huddersfield Town fans and were at Wembley on Monday for the Championship Play-off Final and Town got back to the top flight in English football after a 45 year absence.
Hope all is well with you my dear, sending love and hugs.

>91 Berly: Hi, Kim. Quarter finals at Roland Garros!
95DianaNL
>92 magicians_nephew: Jim, you're certainly not an idjit. Dopper is a trade mark for expensive water bottles.
There is a story about Dopper's name. The vegetable that you call peas, little green balls, is called 'doperwt' in Dutch. My husband always calls his doperwten 'doppers' and the sons always thought this was the right name for their peas. When they finally(!) accepted that no-one understands their 'dopper', youngest son decided that this should be baby cat's name. :-)
96DianaNL
>93 johnsimpson: Hi John. Yes, sports wise there is a lot to follow. I'm glad that they're cycling again in the Dauphiné and Roland Garros is interesting this year. Wimbledon is my favorite Grand Slam. The Tour de Suisse will start soon and I'm already looking forward to the Tour de France, of course!
All is well, work is busy, reading is almost non-existing. I'm going to have lunch now and then work is calling. Big hugs for you and Karen. xx

Hi Diana, hope you have had a lovely weekend my dear, it has been good for sport with Ostapenko winning the Ladies' Final and Rafa making it the perfect 10. Here in the UK we have had a round of the ITU Triathlon series with Flora Duffy winning the Ladies race and Alistair Brownlee winning the men's race from his brother Jonny and the Fugslang won the Dauphine Libere with Froome ending up in fourth place.

Nina, Nathalie, Kim, Paul and John, thank you for keeping my thread warm! xx
Life is busy. Still, I'm eager for the Tour de France to start next Saturday. I hope to watch as much as possible; there will be no Dutch contenders for the GC, I guess, but the top contenders seem to be so equal this season.

>102 DianaNL: Lovely to see you back posting, Diana.
I will be hoping that Froome and Thomas do well of course and also that Quintana and his lack of sportsmanship does not prevail (What he almost pulled off against Dumoulin in the Giro was outrageous). I will probably rooting however for Romain Bardet and believe that less time trials this year and no team one especially gives him a chance.

Dopper is adorable, as is his name. I'm glad he and the other kitties are all getting along.

Hi Diana, hope you have had a really good weekend my dear. Like you I am looking forward to the start of the Tour next Saturday, I hope Froome and Thomas ride well but I think there are a couple of contenders for Froome's crown. I have followed the Tour since 1973 when we used to get 30 minutes of highlights every Saturday on World of Sport. I remember Barry Hoban winning in Bordeaux and Merkcx triumphing and then onto the likes of Hinault etc although I loved following the great Dutch riders and the TI Raleigh team of Peter Post. The likes of Zootemelk, Kneteman and Raas, I love to read cycling books but cannot find anything over here of the Post teams and Zootemelk etc.
Have a lovely week dear friend and send love and hugs.

>115 johnsimpson: John, when I started to follow the Tour, Joop Zoetemelk was a great rider. He so often managed to get second in the GC. I was a young girl and I begged my father to take me with him to the criteriums after the Tour. There we saw Zoetemelk, Kneteman, Jan Raas, Henny Kuiper, and many others. Zoetemelk became one of my heroes, and he still is. :-)

I was very pleased for Geraint Thomas yesterday, Diana. He was unlucky in the Giro so it was nice to see him do so well. Froome looks in good nick on a course specifically designed to stop him winning and has a bit of a cushion over his main rivals already.

Adding my support and sympathy, Diana. Hopefully, Tim and the gang can take care of it. Sorry you've borne the brunt of this. A number of years ago someone (I'm almost sure it was a teenage boy) went around LT being outrageous and rough on everyone. Finally, he was effectively blocked.

I'm very sorry to hear about the harassment you've had to deal with, Diana. I've had the same problem this year, from a couple of members of this group and others outside of it.
