Tin Man

Anyone watching the movie series Tin Man? It's on the sci-fi channel or something. So far I think it could have been done better, but I guess it's just a TV movie. Interesting story anyway.

I have it recorded but have not watched it. Apparently it pulled in "best ever" ratings for Sci-Fi. Maybe this will be a sign to them to invest in more quality programming and fewer "Insects Attack!" movies.

It was really well done for the most part. I thought that the ending was a little weak. They probably should have carried it out to another night. But other than that I really enjoyed it. Lots of elements of the original story in it was were wonderful to spot. =)

I too hope that it will cause sci-fi to invest in better shows & movies. I was also reading somewhere that the writers are open to turning Tin Man into a series if the powers that be at sci-fi were willing.

I watched bits and pieces of it, but thought it wasn't worth watching the entirety. Alan Cumming, one of my favorite actors, was great, but otherwise, the acting was just horrible, there were plot holes big enough to drive trucks through, and the dialog was stilted at best.

Generally speaking I wasn't impressed.

Yeah, I just finished it and overall I thought it was ok. It was too long, for one thing. The acting was also pretty bad - I love Zooey Deschanel, but I don't know how well she worked in this.

On the other hand, I really liked how they took the familiar elements of the "Wizard of Oz" and sort of de-literalized them and created a world in which everything 'gelled'. It also had flavors of steampunk and the movie "Brazil" - which I really enjoyed. It seemed similar to Wicked in the way it gave a familiar fairy tale villain a thicker backstory and a deep connection to a familiar fairy tale heroine.

Neat idea, some great twists, but not done as well as I would have hoped. Definitely weak ending, though.

Also, on a totally stupid note - what kind of parents give one of their children a name like "Azkadilia" and the other one is "Dorothy..."????

I enjoyed the first two parts but thought the last one was weak.

I enjoy WofO retellings like Wicked, and I read the whole Oz series as a kid, so I was really interested to see what they'd do with this. I liked the additions of the seers and that underground realm. The settings were pretty. I found Azkadilia very watchable.

Why did they call it The Tin Man?

I think that the Tin Man - more so than "Lion" or "Scarecrow" - is obviously a reference to the original story. Also, since neither the Lion nor the Scarecrow in "Tin Man" was really ever referred to as a lion or a scarecrow in the miniseries (at least that I recall), those wouldn't really have made sense as titles.

According to cocreator Craig Van Sickle: "It's Tin Man because the original concept was a cop show set in a Blade Runner kind of Oz, where this old woman has been killed who was known as a bitch, and they're looking for a runaway named Dorothy Gale. And that was all we had."

I enjoyed the first two installments, the first 4 hours, but the last one was WEAK as several before me have noted. I think this was yet another example of the special effects overshadowing a story. That is, they focused on the special effects and let the story suffer.

I loved the allusions the original story: OZ stands for Outer Zone, Toto was what Dorothy (DG here) called her childhood "tutor" (a guy that turns into a dog, and the flying monkeys coming from the villian's tattoos was way cool. I enjoyed it mostly from the standpoint of figuring out who represented Scarecrow, Tin Man, the munchkins, etcetera.

Story really suffered. Watch it only if you have the ability to fast forward!

Thw Tin Man has only just been shown in England and I watched the first episode on Sunday evening. I enjoyed it immensely but like others have said, the acting was a tad on the dodgy side. Great stuff though and I'll be tuning in again next Sunday.
