I'm setting up shop here again at the Orange/Bailey book shop. I like hanging here, and some old friends even found me last year. I'm not consistent enough in recording my reads on LT, but for the spells that I do, this is where I'll be.

My goals this year are to read more nonfiction, and keep reading my mystery series', Canadian authors, and of course, women writers. No plans for any Bailey's/Oranges as of now, but once the longlist comes out, I'll be distracted by the shiny new books.

I've started the year with some fantastic reads! I've listened to Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert. (female and nonfiction)
I read Silkworm by Robert Galbraith which is a wonderful series. I'm loving Cormoran and Robin and will definitely be reading Career of Evil this year. (female and series)
I also just loved Canada by Mike Myers. Loved! He is around my age, and he wrote the book as a present to Canada on the 150th celebration year. He is so humble, smart, funny, and proud of being a Canadian. (Canadian author)

Also I've been reading the Lumberjanes series which is quite good. I'm not a huge graphic novel fan, so I only read ones that have the most fantastic reviews.

Hi Elizabeth, found you again : ).

>7 lit_chick: hi Nancy! I thought I've updated here more often, but alas, no.

Great books I've read recently -
March all three graphic novels by John Lewis,
Lab Girl by Hope Jahren,
Career of Evil and Silkworm by Robert Galbraith,
Finding Wonders: Three Girls Who Changed Science by Jeannine Atkins
Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them by Al Franken
Hillbilly Elegy by JD Vance

I made a goal to read more nonfiction this year, and look at me go! 25/49 so half of my reading, and some of the best books have been NF.

Next goal - a few more Canadian books for Canada 150. Hag-Seed is waiting for me next on my iphone and The Massey Murder by Charlotte Gray is out from the library.

Hag-Seed was a good listen, especially as it was read by R.H. Thompson. I loved that movie, Glory Enough for All about Banting and Best discovering insulin, plus he was a regular on Road to Avonlea.

Hag-Seed is part of the Hogarth Series, re-telling Shakespeare plays in modern times. Tracy Chevalier has a book based on Othello that I'd be interested in reading.

Atwood is very readable, and seeing the parallels to The Tempest (nice summary at the end of the book) made the story all the more impressive.

>11 lauralkeet: thanks Laura! I don't think I'll buy 10 books, but I may get one or two. I try not to buy many books if I can help it.

>12 lit_chick: thanks Nancy! Hard to believe it's been ten years.

>13 raidergirl3: me too, Elizabeth, and I tend to buy in small quantities unless I stumble on a used bookshop treasure trove. My tenth was back in October. I have acquired several books since then, but not as intentional Thingaversary purchases.

Happy 10th Thingaversary!

I borrowed an idea from someone (Sibyx?) for my last thingaversary and identified nine wonderful books which I already had and really wanted to read, and regifted them to myself. It was surprisingly satisfying!

>15 Soupdragon: Brilliant!
I tag the books I buy, either 'booksale 2017' (for used, library sale type) or 'bought in 2017' for new, bookstore books. I'm at 9 for each this year. Weirdly, larger than most other years. Maybe I've been building up to my Thingaversary. *Those* are my books, and maybe one new book.

I read a Bailey book! Girl at War by Sara Novic, longlist 2016, was excellent. The wars after Yugoslavia broke up were so awful. This one is set during and after the Croat- Serbian civil war. Horrendous things happen.

It got me looking up the Vladi Divac ESPN 30 for 30 episode about the same fight. It's an excellent documentary about 2 Yugoslavian national basketball players who become estranged after the war. One was Serb, the other Croat.

I digress. The book was a quick and powerful read, good use of jumping time lines and historical significance.

I've requested a few from the 2018 longlist, Three Things About Elsie and Miss Burma which are both on order at my library. I've already read Manhattan Beach which was okay, Home Fire was good, I really liked Sing, Unburied Sing and I loved Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine.

I just finished a 2015 longlisted book, Crooked Heart by Lissa Evans which was very good. I loved the two main characters of Noel and Vee.

I think Crooked Heart is one I should add to my wishlist!
