The Human Genome Project
I'm trying this year to get through the stack of Grove books that had accumulated before I cancelled my subscriptions several years ago. These are short (generally 28 pages) and topical. They are usually fairly interesting when published, but often show their age fairly quickly. When the author has written a full length book on the same topic, it gives a very good indication as to whether that would be worth reading. This particular example is on ethics, and rather rambling.

There is a lot of not very nice things going on, and the book just keeps on and on. I must say, a nice fiction book about it might have finished in a more satisfying manner as well. Still, it helps you understand why Greece is still a mess today. Yes, there ought to have been time to get things in order since then, but if this is how they reacted to the end of WWII, what else has made difficulties since?

Wienerwald (Wandern mit Kinderwagen)
Kinderwagen-Wanderungen : Um und in Wien

I was really looking for a book to suggest walks/hikes that I can do with my walker, and neither book works for me. If you are looking for a book for walking with young children, you might want both.

To begin, while there is a good deal of overlap, the first is really about hiking, the second includes several ideas for outdoor activities with children that don't really include walking. The first is specifically Wienerwald, the second is wider ranging. Both have too many walks with a tower as the goal for my purposes.

Neither has good enough maps for using without extra material. The first recommends mapbooks from Freytag & Berndt. However my experience is that they are heavy to carry, and the page divisions can make orientation difficult.

The first gives very useful icons about the difficulty of a hike. Anything with a plus is going to be difficult to get through with a walker as that indicates things like steps. Otherwise only time estimates. The second gives kilometer and altitude changes, but you have to read the descriptions carefully to find the points that will create problems.

Going through these was useful, as I now have a better idea of what I am looking for.

Hidden figures
What I can't get over is: My husband has often told me about the way his school pushed science and math after Sputnik. I'm enough younger, and spent part of that period in India, so I didn't experience it in the same way. During an era when the country was more aware than ever of how important good education was, the white community prefered not to educate than let white and black children share a classroom.

Nobody passes

Year of no sugar
The sad thing is that many of the items she assumes need sugar just don't. Muffin and piecrust recipes from the 50s and 60s usually don't call for sugar. She never really comes to grips with the difference between sugar added for sweetness, and sugar that is a structural element, part of why the recipe works. A muffin recipe that tells you to add sugar with the other dry ingredients will work just fine without it, although if it calls for a lot, you may need to adjust the amount of flour. A cupcake recipe that starts with creaming the butter and sugar together needs the sugar. Probably not all the sugar, but enough to create that butter-sugar mass that traps air bubbles. If you drop the sugar below half of the butter, you won't get cake. (Sugar that is beaten with eggs is also usually integral to the recipe working.) She does discover that you need sugar for jam making. You do not need sugar in whipped cream.

Still, interesting to read.

Dic 18, 2017, 10:38 am

No, just experience. I lived in India as a child. I certainly never wore a sari regularly, but I had one, and wore it occasionally for several years after. I think I could still wrap one if I had one. At the time, I recall hearing people talk about the cultural differences and that western women usually looked wooden in their saris because they didn't play with them. 'You could pin the end in place on the shoulder and not have to do any adjusting, but DON'T, it is just as wrong looking as if you were constantly buttoning and unbuttoning the top of your blouse.'
