We have reached our goal!!!
I apologize for the delay in posting the December thread. I've had several Senior Moments and kept forgetting that I needed to update this. The other Senior Moment I had was that I forgot that last month I took out those readers that hadn't posted anything for over six months so that this month they looked like they just posted something. I feel really stupid.
We should all congratulate ourselves for reaching the group goal and thank those that reached their personal goal and kept going to help those of us that are lagging behind.
Below is the current list of members that have identified a ROOT goal for 2016 and how many books they read by the end of November.
Stars are for those that are still set to finish their personal goal this month.

Oo, eight more manga to go for the year. Doable as long as I reach a nice reading stride that I can ride into January. Will try my hardest.
Last year a lot of people lowered their goal to make it easier so maybe next year we can try to push ourselves again since it was so "easy" to complete our goal early this year! (Says one of the few leftover people who hasn't finished.)

I have just reached my goal finishing my 48th book last night. This group goes from strength to strength and I look forward to being a participant again next year. I am happy with my goal of 48 as it is doable.
Congratulations to all that have reached their goals and thanks for all the positive and reaffirming comments on this thread. Thanks also to Cheli who pulls it all together despite personal demands and stresses.
I am aiming for some lighter reads to finish the year to see how close I can get to my 75 challenge.

Thanks for the stats, Chèli! And thanks to all fellow ROOTers for the great reading year!

Marion Garthwaite, The Twelfth Night Santons, a charming little illustrated Christmas story (62 pp). 3½*** I still have a couple more Garthwaites to finish my entire Garthwaite library (ten in all, plus a few miscellaneous anthologized pieces). She was a children's librarian turned children's writer who flourished in the 50s and 60s, and she specialized in historical fiction of early California. The Twelfth Night Santons, though, is set in Provence.
2nd for December and 76/75, so far one past my goal.
I don't know that I'm going to set a goal of 75 for next year though. I think I may make an effort to get through more of my Library of America collection, and they're all doorstoppers. Oh well, got a few weeks yet to make up my mind, maybe just 50.
I do have a couple Early Reviews to get read and reviewed. By the time I get to them, they may have been around long enough to qualify as ROOTs. {sigh}

wow I can't believe we're already at our group goal! YAY EVERYONE!
I will still try to reach mine anyway... frankly, if I'm not as close as I want to be nearing the end of the month, I'll pull a few easy ones to make sure I get there ;D

Unfortunately, for me, I know that I won't make my goal this year since real life seem to just explode with so many things to do and people to see.
I wouldn't change a thing since, IMHO, time with family and friends is far more important than reading a book. I know that there are also real life things scheduled for next year so rather than trying the same total in 2017 (84, be happy if I make it to 75) I think I'm really going to reduce and go for 60 instead.
I'm so happy that everyone is pleased with the news of our success and that many are planning to return next year. Working together and supporting each other makes the goal achieved much more enjoyable.
I'll try to setup the new group in a few weeks.

Just finished another ROOT. Confessions of a Crap Artist by P.K. Dick. Quite good as all of his books have been. I liked it mostly for the humor and a bit because of the 1950s satirical bent.
I did not update the group ticker, but both of mine on the ticker thread and my personal page are updated. 31/30 so far this year. Another small step towards 4000?

I finished one ROOT already in December. Falling Kingdoms by Morgan Rhodes. It wasn't the best YA fantasy I have read. Merely passable, but it is so hard for me to put a book aside once I start.

One more here: 33/30 but tickers aren't updating. I'll wait a bit. This one was: The Swan Thieves, and I quite enjoyed it. I think it was well written and well constructed and a good story with good characters. Oh, and I updated only the personal ticker...hopefully it will show soon.
Just checked and both the ticker thread and my personal ticker have updated. \o/

I finished reading My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante. This is the first book in her Neapolitan series. It was good but it is going to take me some time to get to the others in that series. I will send my monthly update at the end of the month.

Me in January, before giving birth to my first child: "A lot of the time, you're just sitting there with the baby, right? Twenty-five books is two per month - I can do that!"
Me in December with my ten-month-old: "HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"
I'm impressed I got through six (plus a decent amount of reading for work, admittedly). Although if I could count my son's books, I've read lots and lots this year. Dino Bites! is a particular favorite for both of us. Maybe I should start a ticker for him next year . . . .

>36 MissSos: That would be a great idea to do a ticker with your son's books! :) And as someone whose friends are in their prime baby-having years, I would love to hear about books that are a hit with the very young crowd -- I'm always looking for gift ideas.

This is a terribly difficult time of year for me. Barnes & Noble keeps sending all those 20%-off coupons to club members for the holidays, and a couple of them have even been 25% or 30%. I mean, I can't let good B&N discount coupons like that just go to waste, can I?

I won't reach my goal this year probably, landing just short of 50 but I'll keep pushing till the end. So far, two more added to bring me to 44/50.
However, I just bought 6 huge tomes due to an amazing book sale (English language books on sale for 4 dollars in Japan! - cheaper than the US!) that I couldn't resist. I don't know why I keep buying books, though, as I haven't read a book in over 6 months, and haven't read a book in English in over a year. But it's that fear of missing out on such a good deal while in Japan.

>54 CurrerBell: Deleting After Alice as a ROOT. My rule was, I'm only counting books which I owned before January 1, 2016. I thought this was a ROOT, but I've seen a sales slip that indicates I bought it in the very first few days of January of this year.

When my son was 4 months old, his grandparents showed him Dino Bites! for the first time, and they swear that he stared at the pages for 45 minutes as they turned them back and forth. YMMV, but it was a serious visual hit with at least one tiny reader. :-) I'm also a fan of The Whale in My Swimming Pool. He loves it, and it's entertaining enough for me to read three times a day without going nuts. The Crayons' Book of Colors is a lot of fun for the adult reading it as well. Since my son won't care about the stories themselves for a while, my criterion for choosing his books is "Can I stand to read it over and over and over without wanting to throw it in the fireplace?" :-)
68HelenBaker
Another root for me taking my tally to 51/48. Another book close to finishing. I am still trying to pull closer to my 75 challenge.

Finished listening to Wrath and the Dawn on the road trip back to Kansas. It was a good YA fantasy novel. It was not the best I have ever read, but it was good enough that I want to read the second in the series. For a first time author it was a good beginning.

I'm reading a CHUNKSTER ROOT, Here Be Dragons, hope to have it done by 12/31!

Just wishing everyone happy holidays! Thanks for being such great people and readers. : ) I might get one more read between Christmas and New Year's...hope so! I am presently working on From Here to Eternity and it is long. Loved the movie and have seen it about 4 times now. Prewitt will always look like Sinatra...lol...oh, and it is really a better book than movie so far, although they are both terrific.

I just finished Elizabeth Gaskell's Cranford, but it was very much a reread – I'm quite familiar with the book, but I wanted to refresh myself a bit while working through Jenny Uglow's Elizabeth Gaskell: A Habit of Stories – and so I'm not going to include it as a ROOT. I'm just starting a first reading of Ruth, though, and I may very possibly get it finished before year's end.
I'd been hoping to include A Habit of Stories in my ROOTing for this year, but I don't think I'll complete it since I'm doing a read/reread of most of her major work as I come to each one in the text.

Wow. Congratulations to everybody for making the goal. I got to 15, but pretty sure I won't make the 25 this year. Guess I'd better go for a slightly lower goal next year.
And thanks cyderry for keeping up with everybody and running the group!

I am cruising through Here Be Dragons, an EXCELLENT (as usual) chunkster by Sharon Kay Penman. She makes King John seem like a sympathetic character, sort of, sometimes... ;)
79Henrik_Madsen
Finished another ROOT: Kruso by Lutz Seiler - an intriguing and rather surreal novel about the end of the GDR.
80Jackie_K
I've added one more to both my and the group tickers. I'm hopeful I'll have at least one more by the end of the year, although that might not get added until a couple of days into 2017 as I'll be away for a few days.

I love Sharon Kay Penman's books. I was slowly working my way through her Plantagenet series, but I got sidetracked by Poldark. She does such a good job of telling multiple sides of a story.

I have completed 2 ROOTs thus far into the month:
Coromandel Sea Change by Rumer Godden; (4*) and
A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens; (5*); a traditional annual read beginning with my siblings & I reading it aloud to one another on Christmas Eve, then me to my children, to my grandchildren and now to our three great grandchildren.
This brings my total to 92 for the year and I probably won't get any more in this year.
Great work everyone. Keep it up!

Another ROOT completed, the doesn't-read-like-a-chunkster Here Be Dragons by Sharon Kay Penman. It's one of the few that got more than 4 stars from me this year.

Well, I just finished my fifth ROOT for December - Point Hollow: A Novel by Rio Youers, last night. I'm hoping to maybe squeeze one or perhaps even two more ROOTs in before the end of the year. It may be wishful thinking, but we'll see what happens.
102Jackie_K
I've squeezed one more in, Jane Eyre. I expect it will be my last for December. I've updated all tickers including the group ones.

I don't want to add to any pressure, but is the 2017 ROOT group anywhere to be found yet? I don't know about anyone else but I will be bereft if this group doesn't carry on!
110Jackie_K
I unexpectedly sneaked in another ROOT under the wire (thanks to it being 99% photos!), Tim Peake's Hello, is this Planet Earth? My View from the International Space Station which was a very beautiful way to end the year's reading. All tickers have been updated.

114lindapanzo
I finished one last ROOT for the year, nearly quadrupling my expected goal for the year.
For 2017 (is there a new group, did I miss it?), I'll increase my ROOT goal. In 2016, I did a lot of rooting around and cleaning out and donating old, unwanted books, in addition to reading some and then removing them from my shelves. I expect to do more of this in 2017. I can see the difference this is making in the piles of books around the house.

I'm calling it for the year - I have friends coming for the holiday starting tonight, so I won't get any more done. But I really wanted to be under 300 ROOTs to start the year, and I know I'll be getting some more books this weekend, so I did some weeding and I've now removed a total of 83 ROOTs from my shelves!

Listen, I could pretend I finished 50 adult books, but I only read 42. I could add all the picture books I read to my nieces and nephews, but I truly want to know what I finished. I thought since I was unemployed, this would not be a problem reaching my goal. I always do. But instead of reading, I spend all my time job searching. Sorry I let you all down.

Hello everyone! Alright, so December was slightly better than I thought it would be. I actually did read four less ROOTs this month than last December. Onwards to the New Year!
Anyway, in keeping with the group theme, here are my totals for December:
Ancient Oaks Pruned: stands for older books read from my TBR pile: 1
Young Saplings Pruned: stands for newer books read from my TBR pile: 4
Trees Replanted: stands for rereads from my TBR pile: 0 (yes!)
New Seeds Planted: stands for additions to my TBR pile: 8
Trees Transplanted: stands for books that were donated: 4
I'm always keeping my personal ticker updated, but I never touch the group one!
