This may be quite a short thread. But for the record, from newrepublic.com, with the original article's links.

Donald Trump doesn’t read books. Reading is a popular pastime, for both laymen and presidents. Barack Obama routinely visits independent bookstores and releases his summer reading list every year. And George W. Bush famously got into a reading duel with Karl Rove, to see who could read the most books.

But Donald Trump is not much of a reader, despite having written The Art of the Deal, "the number 1 selling business book of all time." Asked by Megyn Kelly what his favorite book is besides The Art of the Deal, Trump chose All Quiet on the Western Front. (Not sure what happened to the Bible!) Kelly, perhaps sensing that Trump may not have read a book since sixth grade, asked him to name the last book he read. "I read passages, I read areas, chapters, I don’t have the time," Trump said.

LT member Donald Trump must be too busy to have catalogued his copies of All Quiet on the Western Front and the Bible yet!

Samantha Bee has an interesting theory about Trump's reading.

I remember being pleasantly surprised to learn George W. was a reader. I seem to remember that he had a staff member to pick books for him to help keep him up on various things. Hmm, since he was married to a librarian maybe it was Laura. The book he was reading when I came across that story was Wickett's Remedy.

Two years later, Donald Trump may still be too busy to read books - although I could be persuaded by what Samantha Bee says people are saying (no. 3 above) - but apparently he's not too busy to endorse books:
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/dec/24/trump-book-picks-recommendations...

David Brody & Scott Lamb, The faith of Donald J Trump : a spiritual biography

Stephen Moore & Arthur B. Laffer, Trumponomics : inside the America First plan to revive our economy

Gregg Jarrett, The Russia hoax : the illicit scheme to clear Hillary Clinton and frame Donald Trump

Jeanine Pirro, Liars, leakers and liberals

Sebastian Gorka, Why we fight

Victor Davis Hanson, The case for Trump (2019)

Gina Loudon, Mad politics : keeping your sanity in a world gone crazy

Tucker Carlson, Ship of fools

Salena Zito and Brad Todd, The great revolt

Sean Spicer, The briefing : politics, the press and the president

Perhaps it's just as well he can't read books; a diet of that stuff could seriously affect the balance of a person's mind.

And incidentally, no-one could accuse LT of being part of the liberal elite, fake news or whatever; nine of the ten titles are already on LT.

Speaking of crap... Michel Houellebecq explains why Donald Trump Is a Good President. Compliments from one rabid misogynist, racist, Islamophobic empty-headed cretin to another.

Ah, sorry about that. Maybe it's blocked only for some, e.g. non-North Americans? (I don't have a sub to Harper's Magazine myself but it shows up for me.)

I actually came upon German articles talking about this one first--the slant taken in the commentary is slightly different to Harper's ;):

Schriftsteller feiert US-Präsident : Der nützliche Idiot

ETA: same or similar also in Die Zeit: Donald Trump als nützlicher Idiot. Nur weg mit Europa: Michel Houellebecq schreibt einen Essay für "Harper's Magazine" und verbreitet dummes Zeug. Die Feuer seines rechten Denkens brennen lichterloh.

Apparently I had already seen a free article this month.

In fact, he did not write that book. His name may be on the cover, but it was actually written by Tony Schwartz.

I have read that Obama may not have written his books, either. He is a reader though and quite an orator.
Perhaps the hate coming out here needs to be a bit more civil, especially regarding references to Samantha Bee who should have been removed from television like Roseanne Barr. Perhaps a bit of looking into the mirror here, is required.

I see LT member Donald Trump has been suspended. Is it a metaphor, an augury, karma, ... or just par for the course?

Only took them three years to delete Trump's account. Wonder why they waited so long to enforce their precious TOS?

It's because we're all secretly Trumpists, Mr. Freeque.

It might possibly have been a real account. Personally, I would be surprised he could read. But it's not entirely impossible.
