NOVEMBER ROOT - Progress Thread

We're coming to the final push and we are still on target to reach our goal!

Below is the current list of members that have identified a ROOT goal for 2016 and how many books they read by the end of October.
The percentage is calculated and a star awarded for those on target to reach their goals. More stars for farther toward their goal.

I have removed twelve members to a separate list because they have yet to read one ROOT. They may have forgotten that they set a goal, or real life may have gotten in the way, but until they start up, we will not let their numbers affect the group goal.
I've made an executive decision and removed nine people who have not reach at least 10% of their goal and have had no progress posted in the last 6 months. The numbers have been adjusted.
I think they must have forgotten us.

If there is © next to your name, I see a ticker on your thread that is not in the ticker thread. If you could copy the code to the Ticker thread it would be a huge help each month.
If anyone's number is incorrect, please let me know and I will make the necessary adjustments.

I've got a week off later this month. I'm going to read like a madwoman! September and October were not productive months for me, but seeing that we only need 307 books really motivates me!

I have added 15 ROOTs to my 2016 total, books that were identified as ROOTs, unread, removed, and rehomed.

We can do this!

One last push and we're there! I have 6 left to read but I should clock up my first November one today. I'm going to aim to actually 'give' back to the total this year as I'm pretty sure I can make the 6 with no trouble. Even if I only make 7, it's a good aim. Thanks Chèli for crunching it all together again.

Just finished my first ROOT for November: Escaping Salem. It was supposed to be a ROOT for October, but things happen. Updating tickers now.

I read one more ROOT before the end of October, and I only just got a chance to update my ticker. I've actually read a total of 49 ROOTs. Thank you so much for everything you have done, Cheli! :)

Thanks cyderry, greatly appreciate all the work collating our varied tickers. So good to see how many ROOTs people are clearing off their shelves to make room for new books.

It would be interesting to look at some of the physical dimensions of what people have cleared off their shelves (e.g., we ROOTed through books which if stacked would be as high as X). If I get some time later in the year I may figure that out for my ROOTs.

I just shot past my goal of 75 and am at 92 as of yesterday afternoon! I have not updated any group tickers, only my own personal ticker.

We are doing really well this year! Does anyone remember if we've been this on track before? I can't remember.

Finished my first ROOT for November. I read an old celebrity biography Martha Inc. and found it an interesting read. Even if it was dated and Martha has moved on. As has the world.

I've finished 2 ROOTs already this month, taking my total for the year to 38. I've updated both my and the group tickers.

First ROOT for November, Gore Vidal's Burr (4**** review), 67/75.

Now on to Lincoln. I'm doing a read of Vidal's Narratives of Empire (historical order) series for the Reading Through Time group's November topic of Presidents, Veeps, and Elections.

First ROOT for November down, all tickers updated successfully. I've got 6 books left to read to reach my goal - I think I can do this!

Two more ROOTs down this morning: A Stroke of Genius and Cardcaptor Sakura Omnibus vol. 2 Going to update tickers now.

I finished another ROOT today. Little Paris Bookshop by Nina George has been on my shelf for a little over a year. Today it is done.

Earlier this year, my ROOT numbers were high because I cleaned out a lot of books I'd kept at my long-time work cube.

The other day, I got fed up with all the piles of books in my bedroom and decided to clean out my shelves and free up shelf space. I expect to be adding a lot of ROOTS in the next few weeks. At least I hope so.

Reporting my second ROOT of the month: the lacklustre (for me, anyway) The Crime on Cote des Neiges. This one will be left at my parents' place to start a new box of books to trade in at our favourite used bookstore.

Still proceeding with Gore Vidal's "Narratives of Empire" heptalogy (in history, not publication, order), I just finished 1876 (4**** review), third for the month and 69/75.

Managed to finish my first ROOT of the month - I have updated my thread & ticker but didn't touch the group tickers.

My third ROOT of the month is a reread: Treasure Island, by Robert Louis Stevenson. I read an e-copy through Serial Reader because my physical copy is at my parents' place, but I'm still counting it as a ROOT ;)

Well done, good scholarship, but emphases that I didn't always feel worked well. I really learned a lot, though!

That's true of all the tickers. I update it and then, a few hours later, the new number finally appears.

The only way to really tell what the current number is involves looking at the underlying part of the ticker and not its public face.

I can definitely see much smaller piles of books than there were so ROOTs has really helped. For next year's category challenge, I made one of my categories "real print books that I own" so that'll help reduce the piles even more.

Cheli, if I haven't said it yet, I hope that ROOTs continues into next year, once again. Thanks for the extra work you put in to make this group successful.

It's some kind of PHP script that I've had stored on a link on my LT Home page and that I just remembered about. I'm not sure where I found it, but it's on the LT servers so I'm sure it's a safe script to run if Tim makes it available. It's just going to give you a browser page that says Done but I assume it clears the cache as well.

Hi cheli, I definitely want the ROOT group to continue next year! I'm aware though that it takes a huge amount of your time - I hope the current overwhelming vote for it to continue doesn't make your heart sink!!

My 4th November ROOT (#40 overall) is now finished, all tickers updated.

I finished another ROOT on my Thanksgiving trip. Altered Carbon by Richard K. Morgan is certainly worth reading. It was a real thrill ride!!

I then started another book from the TBR pile and will probably finish it tomorrow on the drive on the next leg of my Thanksgiving trips.

Lookin' at you Cheli. Great photo. They look similar in age to my grandchildren. I have completed my trilogy which takes me to 47/48, all but there! Sadly I am reading a newbie and have another for book group next. Hopefully I will then manage my final book and a couple of bonus ones. I also finished my second ROOT read for November, Grub Line Rider by Louis L'Amour. Some L'Amour short story collections include a few of this author's less enjoyable works, but not this collection. It even includes one of my all-time favorite L'Amour short stories, "War Party", so it's a keeper...and a ROOT. :)

Just finished The Magic of Shirley Jackson (@ 753 pp, also satisfies Big Far Book challenge), 7th for November and 73/75.

I have finished 6 ROOTs in November and I hope to squeeze in one more, but don't know yet if I can manage. My own ticker is up-to-date, didn't touch the group tickers.

I was so busy early in the month that I thought I wouldn't get many ROOTS done. Due to some quality travel time in my car with recorded books, I managed to get more read than, or should I say listened to, than I thought I would.

I read 5 books this month- didn't update the tickers

It is unlikely that I will finish another ROOT tomorrow, so my total stands at 5 ROOTS for the month, and a year-to-date total of 72. My personal ticker is up to date, but I have not added any of this month's ROOTS to the group ticker.

The second part of November I made it a point to go back to my old routine of turning off all electronics at 10pm and going to bed to read. The first week or so I could only manage 5 pages an hour and found myself staring at the wall quite a bit but eventually I managed to read 3 manga. Hope this progresses to more in December and allows me to finally kick this reading rut in the behind.

I have since cut off tv except for a movie now and then, and severely curtailed social media (all but LT!) and online work/research thus avoiding internet rabbit holes...lol. I gather the brain prefers graphic images and pays more attention to them. Interesting.

Hello everyone! Alright, so November was slightly slower than I thought it would be. Although, I have to say that one of my ROOTs for November was a real chunkster at 583 pages. I actually read five less ROOTs this month than last November, which is a gap that I hope to close this month!

Anyway, in keeping with the group theme, here are my totals for November:

I only read 2 this month. I updated the tickers, but I noticed that they had different numbers.

Turns out I read 6 ROOTS this month, not 5, so my year-to-date total is 73. I've updated my personal ticker but not the group ones.

My final tally for November is 8 ROOTs, my own ticker is up-to-date.

Only got 3 ROOTs done this month. Updating personal ticker but as usual, I will leave the group ticker to the expert.

My tickers never work either. Seems to be a problem tech-wise with either the ticker site or it's translation in Librarything.

Hey, everyone, need your opinion about a dilemma.

I have been working on the numbers and have come across 4 readers who had not posted any ROOTS read until this month. They had been moved from our working totals. 156 books were their cumulative goals but the books that they have posted total 12. If I add them back, 144 books still need to be read in December to compensate for their return.

Contact the readers, and ask them to update their goals for the one month left in 2016.

Example: Joe Schmo had 50 as his goal, didn't read any ROOTs until November. Ask Joe how many ROOTs he thinks he'll read through 2016, and update accordingly.

I like Fuzzi's suggestion, but if these readers have been MIA for 11 months, they might not respond and adjust goals accordingly. I would give them that opportunity, but no response, I would not include their counts.
